Been doing some oddball jobs as of late.
Decided it was time to say goodbye to the forever antenna nub. Not sure how this unit is suppose to come out, I tried going nice and easy on it but apparently that doesn't work... Ended up cutting it off with the dremel. This hole will be filled later on down the road like it never even existed. After that was over, I took a look into my interior... Seems as though I have removed every single thing in the interior except for the door panels, LOL. Upon inspecting the interior, my eyes became fixated on the spare tire well and the visible surface rust it displayed... So I started scraping at it, sanding it down to see how far it goes... Majority of it was just surface rust but a few spots were compromised... Luckily they are just small holes so I think I can get away with some sort of body filler. Really not wanting to have to drop my fuel tank and cut and weld in new sections unless I absolutely have to. Sanded down the remaining rusty surfaces and spray bombed it with gray primer for the time being until I can come back to it at a later time (when I begin the engine bay prep work etc). Hopefully this will keep it from rusting any further. Well, this discovery triggered a rust eliminating frenzy of small interior pieces... Rusty ass rear speaker brackets. Rust-be-gone! Here are the rear speaker mounts... Crusty ass 80's yellow plastic color. Be gone! And yes I purposely didn't paint the inside because it would simply be a waste of paint. And finally we have the brackets that hold on the rear back panel all painted up and rust free! That should be it for the rust on this car, I still have layers of dirt to remove from the underbody, so hopefully there are no rusty surprises there. Next up I need to remove the rear quarter windows.

Small mini little update. Fab'd up some brackets to hold the S14 seatbelts firmly in place. For anyone who has done this conversion you know that the S14 belts do not reach the top bolt hole so custom brackets must be done. Be sure to use loctite on all the bolts associated with the seatbelt system, you don't want anything coming lose, ever. After that I decided to freshen up my gauge cluster a little bit. I removed the stock KA24DE tach and replaced it with an SR tach. I also painted the bezel surround a nice satin black to make the gauges have a little more contrast. Before with KA tach. After. SOHC speedo, SR tach, and fresh coat of red sharpie on the needles. As of right now I'm waiting for my school money to deposit into my account. Once that happens I'll be buying an air compressor and air tools so I can get to work on the engine bay.

If you plan on buying a decent compressor and gun you might as well get electric impact. I use a 3/8 snap on impact for my work and that thing is the shit. The lithium battery lasts me a 40 hr work week

Yes that is also on my list of tools to buy, along with a drill. I just bought some ratcheting wrenches from 8mm to 19mm. No longer have to borrow from friends!

Make sure you get something with a decent CFM rating. Air tools require quite a bit of air volume.
Speaking of which, I need to upgrade my compressor...

Do it right and cut it off,
for me it looks like perfect opportunity to move battery there. Weld in some flat piece with mounts for shorter battery. Odyssey 925 is only 5" high and will fit there under the spare wheel cover. Lower center of gravity, weight saving, clean trunk and engine bay plus you'll be the first one who did it right. |

I'm planning on a rear seat delete box, and the battery will sit behind the passenger seat in a nice compartment. There will be another compartment to hold a fire extinguisher behind the driver seat. It's going to take some fancy woodwork but I have the idea in my head.
I want to keep my 5 lug spare in that area for emergency purposes. Cutting it out is the absolute last resort. The rust is no where near as bad as my battery tray, which currently looks like a frag grenade hit it.

I'm not sure if I missed it somewhere in the thread, but what brand were your ill-fitting conversion fenders? Do you care to go into detail about how you modified the radiator support?
I'm loving this so far! You're doing a lot of things I have done or want to do.

Conversion fenders were RaceOnUSA brand. Pretty sure they went out of business not too long ago. The radiator support modification is still a work in progress, I need to clean it up and modify a few more things to get it perfect. I will detail all of this when I begin prep work on the engine bay here shortly...

Sorry for the lack of updates but not too much going on.
Tired of looking at the rust in my battery tray area I just started beating it out with a hammer... Can't wait to cut this out for good, getting tired of looking at it. I also have been doing some research and found out that the S14 Kouki headlight brackets have the same part number as the S15 Silvia. So instead of using S13 Silvia headlight brackets, I found a set of S14 Kouki brackets and modified them to mount on the S13 core support. I drilled two holes on the top where the S13 brackets would normally mount. I feel as if though this will allow me to mount the headlights where they are suppose to be without the use of an entire S15 core support. Although I will see how it all plays out when I get down to it. In other news, my best friend (who has been incarcerated for the last 4 years) drew me a picture of my car that I think is pretty awesome, so I will share it with you guys... Still saving up for a decent compressor + air tools and clearing up all my debt in the process so I can start fresh. So until next time, Imma keep stackin' bread y0.

Nice work Steve. Your patience to find the rust, sand it, paint it and all that jazz is commendable. Especially the dash bar, nobody ever sees that, but I get it. When you know it's there, you just can't leave it. Looking forward to more updates.

Haven't touched the car in so long I had to go out in the garage today and do something. Decided to put the carpet back in now that its cleaned up.
Cleaned up this area best I could before laying the carpet back down. Carpet back in place. Threw the S15 mats in place just to get a visual. And finally I needed to cut out a little hole for the manual seat belts... I still need to put the appropriate holes in the plastic b-pillars for the manual seat belt conversion although I'm not worried about it at this moment. Once I buy the air compressor the engine bay will be my new busy place. Until then, I patiently wait and continue to plan.

Finally bought the air compressor. I was originally going to go with the bigger 29 gallon, but HF had a crackhead deal going on for the 21 gallon so I jumped on it...
I think this will be enough to handle all the small jobs I plan to do with the engine bay. If not I will have to sell it and upgrade but I don't think that will be necessary. Any suggestions on what air tools / brands I should pick up, along with hoses fittings etc would be helpful. I was going to pick up all the basic HF air tools but I figured there are better options out there. Engine bay restoration coming soon!

The biggest concern with a compressor is it's CFM rating. Most air tools(ratchets, impacts, etc) demand quite a large volume of air flow. I personally wouldn't buy anything under 8-10 CFM if I was going to spend the coin. I've been looking at 60-80gal compressors as of late.
I like ingersol-rand, craftsmen(because they are in stock it one ever breaks), and anything Snap-on, Matco, Mac related, but you'll spend quite a bit more coin on the latter.

If you want true industrial duty air tools that you will never have to replace your entire life then I wouldn't buy anything but Sioux, Atlas Copco, IR industrial, Cleco, Dotco and Blue Point Industrial. Yes you will need to oil them with ever use, they will out last your grand children if you care for them. And the tools that are worm gear driven like a DA you can buy rebuild kits. The traditional stuff that most people think are high quality like the tool truck brands are nice, but they are over priced and not the same quality as a true industrial brand.

I'm not really expecting much out of this compressor. I paid $150 out the door for this thing so even if it just defaults to pumping up tires and basic air tools I'd be content. My biggest concern is wanting to lay down primer in the engine bay. I won't be painting the car on this compressor that's for sure. The car will be professionally painted, but I do want to do the majority of the prep work.
edit: Also thinking about possibly combining two of these compressors together if all goes well with the setup of this unit. Running dedicated 20A circuits for each, if they run in tandem, I think I could get a good chunk of work done.

Hey man what brand did you use to paint your Z32 calipers? I'm was contemplating on getting them powder coated but seeing you do them makes it look easy. It'll also probably be quicker if I just paint them myself. Great build by the way.

Soon my friend, soon... I'm pretty much going to be busy all December working, but a fat paycheck will follow. 2014 is this car's year to shine. Windows are coming out, all the seals are faded/old/cracked. And then body work begins since the car will literally be all shell at that point.
