I dropped in a 2871R on my SR and its spooling up just fine, but im getting a bell like ringing from the turbine, the 2871 was brand new and i can hear the ringing thru the intake. Im assuming its the bearings but i dont know if thats bad or not, never heard of this problem before, any ideas?
Thanks,
Tee

Is it ringing all the time or only at certain times(stop,start,idle,rev..)

What is your intake and intercooler piping setup?

It rings while boosting but its in and out and same when i start it up, itll ring for a second or two maybe 3 and then stop wait a few and then start ringing again. I have a FMIC and a HKS intake

Like a whine, hum, tone or ding, ding, ding?

Its a bell like if you got a little cat bell or something like that, so ding, ding, ding would probably best suit it.

Wow, is it loud? I get some ball bearing spool down noise, but I never hear it during idle or boost.... What company is your turbo from?

i have the same turbo and i dont get that sound at all. was there any shaft play? you should check that 1st and that should give you a better id3ea of what it may be.

Does this turbo have an internal wastegate??? I've seen one time a broken spring in the actuator... or one time, my friend had a hks adjustable actuator, and it was so tight that the spring inside the actuator was loose, and ding ding it goes...

never had that problem either.
just hearing the bearings spin around when u shut the car off for a few seconds.

It does the exact same sound, like your bearings would be busted.

sounds like your hks actuator is at the lowest setting causing the wastegate to flap back and forth. put a bit more load on the actuator and you should be fine. same shit happened to me.

anything else you think i should do? how big of a load did you put on it to make work correctly?

My 2871r makes this exact same sound, but only at idle. It sounds like it could be bearing noise, but the noise does sound kinda like a bell. I can really hear it good at my air filter while the car idles. My 2871r has about 3000 miles on it boosted at 16-18 psi.

I havent noticed any ill effects associated with the sound though.

So is this something that could potentially hurt me?

just enough so that the wastegate doesnt rattle.

Holy crap! I have been searching and searching for that freaken bell noise forever! I have been under it and on top of the engine bay looking everywhere trying to see what is loose and making that noise! Its kinda irratating! It seemed to me that engine rattle was when it was most present so I thought something was loose. It seems to do it most when its cold. I never thought it would be the turbo. I have my actuator turned down quite a bit so Im going to look into that too.

You are running a oil restrictor right? Too much oil pressure will fry those bearings in less than a year...ask me how I know...
