My sr setup/ 2nd post/ hello everyone

Hey guys I guess I've been signed up here for a while but never posted. I haven't even been trolling the forum really. I usually post most of my stuff on Freshalloy but that place seems like its pretty dead since I've gotten back into the 240 scene. This is my 3rd 240sx. My first one was when I was about 17 and I did my first sr swap. This one I bought with the sr already swapped into it. I'm an OU college student and believe it or not I am on a budget. All of my tools are complete trash tools. Nothing is name brand except for my torque wrench which is a craftsman. I have no air tools and a tiny garage. I barely have enough cash to pay for the parts that I need to rebuild it right now.

Anyways, I have an s14 with an s14 sr20det with an s15 turbo:

The motor runs perfectly and very strong but I got a job at a machine shop and need to take advantage of where I am working. That being said, I pulled my engine a few weeks ago. This is where its at now:

I have never pulled an engine apart before so any advice you can give me, I will take.

I am building the engine with new pistons, rods, camshafts, and valve springs. The goal I have with this car is just to be my fun car that I can take lots of pride in since I did the engine build myself. I want to push about 450 horsepower at the wheels when its all finished and I have upgraded my turbo/fuel/ignition setup.

I have documented as much of the tear down as possible and may post some more of it up later but this is more of an intro than anything.

having a full machine shop, one thing which you can do which most other people wont do when rebuilding engines in garages, is you can drill all the plugs out of the oil passages in the head so you can get it fully cleaned out.

after you drill them, you will have to tap them for new plugs since the original ones are press in.

I probably wont be drilling out any oil passage plugs. I'm not worried about there being any sludge in this engine. This thing is immaculate on the inside. No burn marks like it got low on oil or ever had old oil in it. The previous owner of this engine really took care of it. Definitely a good idea though.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Working at the machine shop is pretty cool. We have 2 engine dynos up here and some of the engines that come through are amazing and make insane power.

I really hope he has a FSM if he's ripping the engine apart already.... I would hope that would be a given.

Dont feel bad about having a tiny garage and hardly any tools I built my SR in corner of the living room with a one of those small craftsman tool boxes and a few wrenchs, the main ones you need are 8,10,12,14,17

Just follow the FSM and you should be good,
Dont loose that orange O-Ring on the front and REPLACE the Oil Pump. Plastigauge the bearing clearances and tourqe everything down

haha you my friend just took dedication to the next level. I can't believe you have an engine in your living room. I can handle the small garage but I don't think there is any way that I could keep stuff organized in the corner of a room. I have the little O-ring but I am going to be replacing it with the new water pump. Definitely replacing the oil pump, but I'm glad you said something. I was actually debating on whether or not to do so since it is so expensive. I found it for 160 brand new online though.

You are right on the wrench sizes but there were certain tools that I didn't have such as the 10mm Allen wrench for the head, and the 8mm? Allen wrench for the timing chain bolts. I didn't have a few of the 12 point sockets that were necessary for a few of the bolts such as the piston oil squirters. I didn't have the big socket for the crankshaft either.

If there is any interest in my build I might just make this into a build thread and go ahead and start posting up more pictures.

dont loose tranny bolts and check on ebay for oem replacement parts i found my water pump for 45 bucks brand new on there. phase2 has a fsm that you can down load for when you put everything back together. youll need to invest in a torque wrench for the head studs. good luck i just got done with mine now i gotta find the time to put it in.

I already have an FSM that I printed off. you actually need it for disassembly for such parts as the head and the main bolts. Gotta take em off in order and in steps. I also have a craftsman Torque wrench.

Question about the high temp paint: How long until it starts flaking usually? I am going to paint mine as well but would like to know what the average lifetime is before it starts to flake off. Also, how many coats of paint did you put on the block? Also, what brand of high temp paint is recommended?

If you do a good job cleaning the surface It wont, No problems with mine after a year.

I wouldnt do the engine block, just cuz if it does start to flake it will look like shit and ppl can see it. I power wash mine ever time I wash my car and it keeps it nice en shiney ^_^,
I think I did 2-3 coats on mine, I forgot the name of the paint but its the one with the V-8 on it

Thanks for the recommendation. I really dont plan on painting the transmission even though yours does look good. I wonder if there is a higher quality engine paint out there that would have me less worried about flakes. All I plan on painting is the engine block and upper oil pan.

Well so far I have no fakes on the Tranny So Im sure it will hold good on the Engine, Just make sure you clean the block real good with no oily residue
