Tool Advice Thread
There wasnt a thread for this so thought it would be nice to have one so we can discuss craftsman tools etc and deals that are current.
So Ive been watching this since Black Friday, the price has finally come down to when it was BF price. Jumped on this right away knowing last year it sold out pretty quick. Craftsman 26 in. 4-Drawer Heavy-Duty Ball Bearing Rolling Cabinet - Black - $139.99 http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00937982000P Heres one in Red http://www.sears.com/26-in-4-drawer-...71000P?prdNo=1 |

cool idea for a thread.
hopefully the thread isn't specific just to automotive, cuz I like doing things around the household too lol. my recent craftsman purchase was the bolt-on. Purchased at Sears for about $100. I liked it because you can change the tool and that it was 20v, so I figured why not. One thing I liked about this drill is that the nozzle part is full metal, unlike some Ryobi's and Makita's I've seen that were plastic. FYI, Black and Decker has the same type tool and attachments. I bought the Black and Decker circular saw at wal-mart for about $40, and it FITs and works on my craftsman bolt-on. I can only assume all the other attachments work the same (probably all made in the same chinese factory lol).

I have a lot of craftsman tools from when my friend used to work for sears.
I have a set of like 3000lb/pair high lift stands, jack, impact wrench, drill, the mechanics tool set and a bunch of other tiny bits. The only things that ever broke were some random U joint that my friend broke ( got it replaced the same day LOL) and one of the retaining pins on my break bar kept coming loose so I got a new one ( free obviously) That drawer looks like a good deal so I may have to snag that up if my local home depot doesn't have anything similar for cheaper. I have been looking at some of the 55-80 gallon air compressors. Anyone have any experience with them? Summit racing has a nice lineup of ingersol rand that's really competitive. |

didn't craftsmen sell out to china? Just go to harbor freight and don't pay for the label mark up of "craftsmen" for cheap chinese junk.
I like my tools like i like my coilovers, cheap and junky.

Husky stuff at Home Depot is better for the price over the Harbor Freight stuff IMO. I have a large Husky toolbox and really like it... only paid $200 new but was on sale.
Some Craftsman tools still say made in USA but when comparing with the quality of my Craftsman tools purchased 10 years ago I don't think they really are. Channelock seems to have suffered the same fate. Quality just isn't what it used to be. |

They can say made in the US as long as a few parts originate here and they are assembled here. Thier digital torque wrenches are made in china, but the regular ones are made here, supposedly. Anyways so far even my chinese craftsman tools have outlasted my harbor freight crap.

Sounds like we should just change this to the tool advice thread.
Quality vs price ectSometimes buying a snap on tool is a good idea, like a ratchet. Other times it just doesn't make sense, like a pry bar or hammer. What brand and style of compressor would you guys recommend for medium to high use? |

I could chime in. I worked at Sears for 5 some odd years and have grown pretty familiar with Craftsman stuff. Though I left maybe 3 years ago I haven't heard anything about there hand tools being made in china. Actually, the last set I bought still says made in USA, that was this past xmas, so idk.
If anything, the majority of there power-tools are china made. I love there hand-tools though. I put them through good use and have yet to break a socket. Rachets on the other hand, while they are pretty sturdy, do break under heavy load. Sears replaces the internals if you just take them in. One thing that I've grown to love are GearWrench ratcheting wrenches. FUCKIN' best value ever, things are rock solid, super polished (in comparison to the craftsman ones at the same price range), and STILL have lifetime warranty! As for tool boxes, if you're gonna go craftsman, try for anything QuiteGlide or BallBearing. Basically the difference between the two (or any other of the Craftsman line) is weight capacity per drawer. That is, once the drawer is loaded with tools the more evident the quality when sliding the drawer in and out. if you guys have any questions, I can do my best to answer them from what I can remember.

Well SK is now owned by Ideal Industries who has had patent infringement suits filed against them in the past, no one is free of guilt in some way, shape, or form in the patent infringement category.
SK made tools for Craftsman in the past and had the first patent for the round head ratchet, its sad that a company like that gets sent into bankruptcy and bought out.

I was looking at a friends brand new $2000 snap on tool box, no where did it say made in the USA like the older ones. Anyways about the SK tools, they still make good stuff, just saying its a shame they are no longer their own company innovating like they used to.

Yea no idea why snap on does that now....but I do know the craftsman stuff now is made in China and the warranty doesn't exist unless you have a receipt at least at kmart and ace....Sears are hard to find apart from going to the mall

When i was 18 and first getting into cars, i bought all my tools Craftsman.. I still use the ratchets, but right now I tend to use Cobalt deep wall sockets, cheap and nice. My impact gun is Craftsman, my air compressor is HF lol.
I like Cobalt (Lowes) over Husky (Home Depot). The Duralast ratchets do look decent . Now my tools are a mix of whatever.. I'm no professional mechanic or bragging to have the baddest tools. Some good deals posted here though http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/f...splay.php?f=36

Some of you guys take your tools way too seriously... If you wrench for a living I would understand why you want the best of quality tools but if this is your personal tool set I dont see why craftsman would be such a bad brand to purchase, especially when there is so many sears around. I never used craftsman tools to a point where it broke, but even if it had you can simply take the piece back to sears and have it replaced.
HF tools you would be shit out of luck or from what I heard you have to bring back the complete set to get warranty.. Autozone/oreilly/pepboys etc is even worse.. when I broke my breaker bar (how the FK..) you need a receipt for their lifetime warranty, who the fk keeps receipts?! So yea, craftsman/sears online receipts FTW, craftsman club ftw aswell. Speaking of tool sets, this is a great deal for starters. 309pc set for $189.99 =) http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00941309000P Oh BTW, there are still craftsman tools that are made in the USA. http://www.sears.com/craftsman-49-pc...2&blockType=G2 |

This is about the same with me too. I loved Craftsman, and probably 85% of my tools are still Craftsman. But since they went to China, I went to Kolbalt. Chinese tools are Chinese tools, and Lowes is closer to me. There is a definite difference between a USA built Craftsman tool and a Chinese built one.

Stanley is another decent brand for the money. There adjustable wrenches are unlike anything I've tried. Superior nut/bolt grip, slender jaws and won't back out of adjustment. They blow my craftsman, channelock, harbor freight adjustable wrenches away.
Kobalt is nice too though. Been thinking about picking up their 250ft lb torque wrench since Husky changed to a cheaper design. For the air compressors, seems like the 60 gal Husky has good reviews. I know someone who's been using his for years without any issues. I had a Coleman 60 gal compressor that was really nice until I moved and didn't have space for it. Wish I still had it. |
