I've noticed some oil leaking out between the valve cover. I didn't think much of it at first, but it has become progressively worse over the pass couple of weeks. I was at the NJ meet on April 6 and a couple of the guys told me that I just needed to take the cover off and replace a gasket (or something like that). Can anyone clear this up for me? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Just go to napa or autozone and get a valve cover gasket for your car. Un bolt the bolts that go to the valve cover. Clean the groove that the valve cover gasket goes on really well. then pop the new one on and bolt it up. I dont rember the torque specs for the valve cover but i dont think it is much.

There are no torque specs for the valve cover. All there is is a specific pattern for removing the bolts. Also, make sure that the gasket they give you is a two-piece. They're not cheap... (around $30 or so).

Hey save some money where is the cover leaking? If in the front or rear you can get some high temp rtv and place in the groves of the seat as long as it is not torn and not burned.I had a leak and i put the sealent and it worked fine.I have a 97 240 so i might be a little different but i dont know.

Hey, what would happen if I just use rtv for instead of purchasing a valvecover gasket?

DO NOT USE RTV. The valve cover has a very deep groove, and two half moon opening on the front and back that you would not be able to fill. You DO need RTV for the bottom of the Half moons though.
There are torque specs for the bolts. I believe they are 12-14 lbs. Can't remember whee I saw that in my FSM though. remember your tightening into an Aluminum head. Stripping those threads is NOT fun. I have the bolt removal and tighten procedure for the 91-up, but not 89-90. sorry

Hey sykikchimp, just wondering, what is the pattern for removing the bolts on a 91-up 240sx? I wanted to change my gaskets and remove the chain guide but I'm afraid I'll do it wrong and have my engine leak oil. Also, do I need to put sealant on both sides when installing the gaskets? Do I even need sealant? I tried finding info, but haven't found it yet. I wanted to purchase a FSM, but I can't find one too; you know where I can find one? Anyways, any help will be appreciated.

Kind of reviving an old thread, but I wasn't sure if this was answered.
"To install, use a NEW gasket and/or RTV sealant, then position the rocker arm cover in place. Torque the cover bolts-to-cylinder head EVENLY (working from the ceneter to the end of the cover) to 5-8 ft. lbs. on Z series engine, 2-4 ft. lbs. on C and V series engines and 5-7 ft. lbs. on K series engines." Taken from the nice Chilton folks. 5-7 ft. lbs. of torque, no specific pattern but torque evenly from inside to out. -Matt |

7ft/lbs is nothing...but the bolts bottom out before they squish the gasket anyway.
Ever notice they're really thick at the shank, way bigger than the threaded portion...? The 7ft/lb thing is to keep you from stripping out the AL hole, not so the gasket fits right. FYI... - Brian |
