if you were agnostic/atheist...
...and you found a sweet job at a church that pays very well, and you applied, and they offered you an interview, and told you that "regular service attendance" was a requirement of the position, even though it has NOTHING TO DO with what you do... would you go for the interview/take the job?
i ask because i'm agnostic and found a website maintenance position at a church. apparently a pretty big church, because the pay is good. i had a phone interview and they said i could come in for a regular interview, but mentioned that i'd have to GO TO CHURCH to keep my job

an hour of church that you could not pay close attention to and you aren't 100% required to go to in case you have something important to do...i'd prolly do it.
Unless it's one of those "chuches" that has three hour services...that might get old..

I will never become a hypocrite to put food on my table. If I have to attend to make sure there are no technical difficulties or I have a duty to perform then fine, but if I have to be there to attend mass then fuck that shit, stupid ass heretics.
I turned down a job doing tech support for a catholic academy because of that. I'm Atheist.

Yeah just not pay attention, but then hopefully they don't make you go to fellowship and shit.... then it would suck.... but yeah go for it. If it don't work out find something else or find something while you working there... no biggy.

I say you take the job.
Would be entertaining to see you come back transformed as a religious zealot. They're not forcing you to believe in anything. They're just asking you to attend as part of the job. I'd just see it as part of the deal. It's only as personal as you want to be. In terms of principles, technically going to church isn't against an agnostic's beliefs. The agnostic is skeptical but open to ideas in spirituality & religion. I could see how it may contradict an atheists beliefs, but that's something else. Back to the job, pay is pay. at the same time, pay isn't everything. you have to consider if there's anything worthwhile working there to add to your resume. you also have to consider if there's any room for meaningful growth. don't waste your time if it's not. Personally, I'm apathetic (can't be bothered to be concerned either way). I would prob take the job just for the experience of it. If I find I can't take it any more, or find something better, I can always move on. |

is there any way knowing what goes on in the services is necessary to run the website? it's plausible they want you there for that.
as for taking the job, it depends how much i'd need the job. i've had a lot of experience going to church and not believing anything or paying attention.

i would. being that you have no personal ties, to what ever God that is there, you really have no ramifications in that department. so all that leaves is your mind and whether or not you want to sit there once a week and listen and witness what you dont believe. so if you can handle that, then go for it.

I say don't take it. I am christian, and trust me the moment they find out you are agnostic, they will be all over you trying to convert you. The irritation would be great. If you think you can deal with stares, whispers, and judging looks from everyone, then do it.
Unless of course they are the kind of christian I am and let be be what they are and don't judge or bash God down their throat.

Legally:
No one can stipulate, as a terms of employment, that one attend religious services unless the duties of the position require that you be there and in the services. Realistically: Would you want to fight with a group of potential hick-ass midwestern religious zealots over such a legality, then actually deal with the nonsense that would come with KEEPING the job? Fundamentally: Eventually the bullshit that would come with faking it would cause you to buckle. If you come clean about just going through the motions, then there will be a competition to make you one of them. No, it is not worth selling out for.

bring a laptop.
surf the web. if they ask tell them you are checking up on work related things. if they require you to attend your place of work, tell them you expect to be paid - i dont know about your particular state but i believe in california the minimum hours worked per day is 4, if you are not allowed to work the 4 hours due to management, you should be paid for 4 hours. personally, i would take the job even if they dont pay you for the sunday service. its like working at a correctional facility, even if you dont agree with the majority of people there, work is work and money is still money. |

Its all about presenting an image for them. They have to justify employing people to the congregation who is donating money to the organization. They want employees who seem presentable. It would be like going out and getting smashed every night and working a daycare in the day. Who cares what you do in your own time? But we all know moms would flip shit if their kids were being watched by a hard partying, excessive drinking, hooker fucking kind of guy lol. I say just go sleep through a service once a week and who know you might even make some friends along the way. The group I work on cars/ drift with is half hardcore christian and half militant atheist and everyone gets along great despite the occasional dispute but things never get out of hand. We are all great friends despite religious viewpoint. In this economy, take the job.

It would get boring pretty quick, unless its those churches that go for only an hour a week. I used to go to church Sundays and Thursdays. from 6-10 or 12 whenever the sermon was over. Sundays though everybody would take food and stuff. I enjoyed it for like a year or so until I found I just went for the music, then I just started getting Christian Music...

well, most of you would take the job, it seems. some say that they wouldn't be a hypocrite to put food on the table. and i can respect that. i guess it's impossible NOT to respect that, actually.
i was raised Lutheran. kind of. my dad (was) Roman Catholic (until he went apathetic to the whole thing some time ago), and my mom is UCC. there was a Lutheran middle school down the street from my house that was closer than the public school, so i went there. all my friends then went on to a Lutheran high school, and i followed. at any rate i've been to church, i've done the whole thing, been baptized and confirmed and all that, and some time between the end of high school and the last few years i've realized i don't believe any of it and it seems more of a business than what it should be. anyway, taking on this job could really help out my resume, the pay is a nice step up from where i am in my day job, and i haven't been in a church in about 6 years (save funerals), so maybe it could be a good experience. or a really, really shitty one. i'm going to go for the interview, and if they offer it, i'm going to take it. yeah girl it's going to suck when i have to stand up with everybody and sing My Own Prison or whatever hymns they have on sunday, though.

So I am guessing you will have to attend Sunday service?
That is one extra day that you have to wake up early on and do not get paid for. Add up how much you would make in a week, and divide it by the number of hours you work plus the number of hours you would have to spend in church and not get paid for. That would be your actual salary per hour, haha. |

Christian Slater.
Amazing. By the way, my brother did community service for school at a church, where he watched kids at the playground. They found out he was a 'non-believer,' haha, and suddenly everyone was trying to lure him to come to all the random church activities and trips and whatever else they do. After a couple weeks he told our parents that he was sick of all the fake smiles and attention, and went to do community service elsewhere. |
