setting timing on aftermarket ecu

on a sr20 with an aftermarket ecu should timing be set per fsm (tps unplugged ) or should it be set with tps plugged in? im having cold starting problems with my pfc and am checking the basics first.

after checking the timing on my sr20 with a d jetro pfc, i get very different reading with the tps plugged in vs not. i had 17 degrees at idle initially with the tps plugged in, this is how my timing was set with the factory ecu/turbo and car started no problem cold, set it to 15 tps plugged in not much change in starting. when i set the timing to 15 with the tps unplugged it reads retarded timing when i plug the tps back in and vacuum drops from 21 inches to 19 inches with the tps plugged in so im not 100% sure that is the correct method either.

can some one please verify how i should be reading the timing on a sr20 with a aftermarket ecu.

Easiest/quickest way to check timing:

1. Hookup the timing gun so you're at least reading something 'in the relm' (will be all jumpy as it's not in timing mode)
2. Rev engine up to 4000 rpm or so with hand on throttle body and let off- while doing this, keep checking timing light on the crank.
3. As the revs come done focus on the timing...it will jump around...but almost the very end of the revs coming down the timing mark will stabilize...this mark should match up with the 0* mark. If it doesn't, adjust the CAS until it does stabilize on the 0* mark. This only occures for a second, so you will need to rev it a few times for verification. Once you see how it works you'll understand how to manipulate it.
