SR20DET Upgrades?
So, I have an SR20DET blacktop installed in my S13 since spring, and the car is running great for months on stock boost with new GT2871R turbo, centerline custom exhaust manifold, new exhaust and apexi AVC-R, but now I want moar.
I also have Apexi HG and ARP studs. For the next steps, I would appreciate your input: -upgrade injectors, 550 or higher?, thinking 750 -standalone ecu-which one do the tuners like. haltech, apexi,etc.... -aftermarket intake manifold- is isis ok, or other -cams- poncams, hks or other. Not going overboard, but want a good performance increase. Would prefer not to have to remove the head again to achieve this. Bolt on. target is 300 plus hp, want the hp but not at a cost of reliability. Using premium gas and turbo settings, 15 pounds max. This is a daily driver. What do you think?

Go with id1000.
Aem or haltech. Full standalone. Greedy mani or isis. And beef up the fuel system. Somewhere along the lines a z32 maf. A good upgrade once you go full standalone Is ls3 coil packs. Sent from my GT-P3110 using Tapatalk |

I put down 355hp at 16psi with
Cometic 1.2 mm head gasket Tomei 260in 260out 12.5 high lift proclaims Tomei solid lifters Garret 2871r .64 at 3 inch exhaust Turbo outlet 3 inch downpipe Power fc d-jetro Freddy intake Tubular exhaust manifold 740cc nismo injectors 255lb walbro fuel pump So if you want you can take that list into thought. Keep the boost at 1 bar and you will probably in the 320-330 range or a more mild tune. |

I wouldn't bother with a freddy intake manifold, they kill low end torque and the gains really is not worth it for 350-ish whp. Some 750cc injectors and some 260* cams would be perfect. Check out nismotronic, has most of all of the features of a full standalone for a fraction of the cost.
I have some BNIB Tomei cams, shoot me a PM! |

You download the software from the nismotronic Website. Than when you plug it into your pc the unit authenticates your software and downloads updates.
So you can tune it or have it tuned. |

I'd do
Nismo 740cc injectors Apexi power fc l jetro assuming you have a z32 maf Jwt s3 cams I'd keep the stock intake manifold if you really only want 300rwhp and save your low end power And a hks t28 wg actuator But with that being said you will be in the 350whp range reliably..

SR20DET Upgrades?
Im definitely hearing the 740 injectors and standalone ecu. What would be affected if i went with the jwt cams and solid lifters as opposed to the hydraulic ones. New springs would have to be installed too? I really dont want to pull off the head, since it would require a new hg.

It's a 20 plus year old motor that you are going to raise the boost. Who knows who beat on it before you. Changing the head gasket would be preventitive maintenance, I personally would change it. You don't need solid lifters. I am running solid lifters in my hx35 setup. You are not going to be running that much boost or revving that high.

If you go with the jwt s3 cams you don't have to change the valve springs or anything so leave that alone...and while your there add a pair of rocker arm stoppers

I have to disagree with you on that. On a motor that is notorious for people beating on it and revving high, if he is gonna upgrade the cams he should replace the springs, they are probably pretty soft by now. Last thing you want is valve float on the dyno.

^well I said that assuming his valve train is within spec..with that mentality then rebuild the bottom end with forged pistons and new rings/bearings,etc so they don't melt or break the ringlands or get rod knock..you can sit there and change everything to not have future issues on a dyno or whatever..I ment that jwt sells that cam for a stock valve train and you won't have issues as long as everything is within factory spec.

gt2871r 64 a/r on the stock manifold
- replace all gaskets with new from dealer apexi PFC L-jetro 300zx maf that looks clean good tune 740cc Injectors BRAND NEW -you will need to modify the intercooler plumbing -S3 JWT cams are necessary if you want to go from 315rwhp to 340rwhp -use OEM valvesprings and keep it below 6700rpm, 16psi, and it will last. -we use brand new parts because used parts cost almost just as much and are questionable |

^I've already got new apexi hg and arp studs installed. I copper sprayed the hg before assembly, which works awesome, but makes it a bitch to remove the head gasket if you want it off and will probably destroy the hg in the process. I had no plans to remove, hence the bolt on cam plan.
I did not get the head decked when I had it off, since it looked pretty good, so the copper spray was insurance against any sort of leakage. It definitely does a great job! sticky as shit.

S3's don't require spring upgrades because the cam profiles are designed to use factory springs. I don't care what anyone says, Cody has run S3's for years with track abuse and never swapped his out. You don't need a "full" standalone. A tuneable factory ecu(Nismotronic, Nistune, Apexi PFC) will be fine for your goals. When installing a Metal headgasket on ANY motor, surface finish and straightness need to be verified. Just because it "looks" good doesn't mean a damn thing. As with anything, your setup is only as good as it's weakest link. Make sure you have the fuel capable of pushing your goals.

First, isis sells crap, so forget them.
For reliable and somewhat cheap 300whp: FMIC, bigger radiator, nistune, ev14 based injectors, UP THAT BOOST, why stop at 15psi ? There you go, now you can think about getting a stronger gearbox because you near its limits. Z33 box is very good. Last thing : more power on the same engine = more costs, now and in the long run, and less reliability. Whatever you hear, never forget that. |

SR20DET Upgrades?
^ thanks, awesome info. The exhaust side is completely finished with all new high flow and new turbo. Now that i have driven it and made sure that my current config is good, now its time to turn up the heat and do the intake side and ecu to see what this motor really can do. Moar power!
Im going to look at the jwt- s3 cams. Ready to take that step also. Looking at local tuners to get a good tune on things Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Another thing also is if there's no good/reputable tuners local I'd consider a rs Enthalpy or a jwt tune and that would be a lot cheaper anyways..they usually run a little rich but I loved my tune and it never gave me any issues!just do research on both company's and take your pick..I personally went with rs Enthalpy but that's because Martin had a dyno day locally and flew down for a weekend and I got a more "accurate" tune rather then a mail in option

There is also nismotronic now. For the price I think it was well worth. The guy who co designed is always available to reply to email questions and picks up the phone when you call. The breakout box is separate and can be remotely mounted. I keep it in the glove box. it is a separate board in the stock ecu. Plus it has anti-lag and launch control. If you turn it on. plus you can have multiple fuel and ignition maps for different fuel. SO you can switch fuels for the track and daily. It is a usb right o your laptop.
Sorry. I love it Was just trying to give you the good details |

In today's mad world, the sr20det is only good for mild upgrades.
It doesnt make sense (money vs power) to invest in better internals, or stronger gear box, or any other high dollar modification or anything that requires a tear down and rebuild. Unless you absolutely require an sr20det under the hood for some other reason (2.0 class?) there are other engines out there, like the LS and 2J, that will support more power without such modifications, and cost less. The barrier used to be installation: welding, wiring. That made it a custom job for only the truly skillfull. But not anymore, not with pre-made custom motor mounts and harnesses. |

My problem is that I brought the engine back with my from okinawa so I have been stuck with it till I can afford what I really want. Or sell this setup when I am done.
