Dazed and Confused - The Anti-Drift - An S15 powered Kouki S14
There are a FEW recent pictures below, followed by some background information, specifications, and the beginning of my time with the car.
**For Recent Updates Please go to the Later Pages with the most Recent Posts and Discussion!!** Hey Guys, I'm Brian. About Ten years ago or so, I had a fairly nice, well rounded S13 Coupe with a very clean SR swap. It was a father son project that I still kick myself for getting rid of a decade later. I have had a few great cars and a few shitboxes since (more to come on those once I update this thread). I recently sold my 1969 Firebird Coupe and decided it was time to fill that void. I decided an S14 was the only way to go. I was dead set on my decision, it would be a Kouki S14 in either White, Red, or Silver. I originally started looking for bone stock cars with which I would do an S14 SR swap and start from scratch. Iam working on a fairly decent budget, I am going to build my ULTIMATE S14. I eventually opened my criteria up to include cleanly swapped cars. Well, as luck would have it, I stumbled across a very solid 97, Ultra Red S14 with a fresh S15 Spec R SR20DET swap about 3 Hours from home. The car was relatively low mileage, all the VIN's matched, All of the Glass was OEM, the interior was clean, and she was ready to go!! Long Story Short, I snagged her up! The Previous owner did a great job with the swap, and did not hesitate to provide me with any and all information concerning the car. I will absolutely have to change a few things, but Charles provided me with a wonderful canvas to start my build. A current agenda is posted at the bottom. I will be updating this build thread as I go along, both editing the original post, and keeping track of my progress with pictures and small write-ups along the way. It feels great to be back in the game. 10 years is a long time; upon my return to Zilvia, I've noticed the scene has changed drastically. I feel like an OG. This will NOT be a Drift car. It will see Autocross Duty, hopefully a few HPDE's and some open track days at a few Tracks in driving distance. It will be my street warrior to carve up all of the great roads here in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia and Southern West Virginia. I'm looking for a Stable suspension, but something that is compliant enough and has enough travel to absorb all of the imperfections this region has to offer. It will get some fat rubber, and it will always have it's Air Conditioning. It's a bit late... and I didn't get home until 3:30 this morning after getting the car. I'll update this post tomorrow with a better introduction, some history of my past builds, and finally snap some proper pictures with the Trusty Nikon! Great place to start! I hear ya on the OG position, I previously had a S13 back in 2004 and sold it and got a S14 a little over a year ago.... Very different scene and happy to see someone else with the "anti-drift" state of mind!
Subscribed! Edit: I bet your steering wobble at 60mph is your outer tierod bushings. I see that it says they were replaced but I would still peek at them.

I've been digesting a few threads on NRR. Ill keep at it Im planning on having Odi build me a set with a longer travel than normal using helper springs and longer shock bodies. My only problem right now is deciding what spring rates I want to go with. FWIW, FEAL builds GREAT setups. I ran them on my Sti and was VERY impressed. Tight as could be, but absolutely, 100% road better, more compliant, and more stable on the street than the OEM suspension setup. Also, Feal will build anything to your specs

Not trying to sell, I just have noticed I haven't seen much on FEAL in this realm. It's nice stuff. not off the shelf shock bodies with stiff springs like a lot of coilover manufacturers.

Updates:
SO, I finally have 4 working headlights (2 high, 2 low)... I need to adjust them... They have some sort of UNKNOWN projector in them. Definitely not stock... I had to make some harnesses to run plain bulbs... It had some Xentec garbage HID kits in all 4 sockets... I also need to find two of the rubber boots to help seal off the lights. Ultimately they are going to have to be taken apart. I see a lot of chrome peel inside, and I need to block off some light areas that are shining through at certain areas. At least they still have all of their tabs and the glass is in great shape!! On the agenda today is Calling JGY Customs and JSPEC to try and find an OEM trans mount and an OEM shifter..... I really need to get this thing back on some stock rubbers. I also need to get me a new exhaust and a new blow off valve. I really want to order a nice BlitZ Nurspec R, which is what I had on my S13 (675$) but wow is it tempting to just buy a nice, stainless steel no name exhaust for $150-$300.... like Godspeed or Topspeed... in the end.. It's just a bunch of piping.... I need a new BOV too... this cheap CX racing piece is causing my idle to stumble... I suppose I'll suck it up and buy an HKS SSQV...

Whatever you do, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT, do any business with JGY! After all these years, I am surprised after all the litigation, lawsuits and issues they are still in business..........
Great purchase otherwise! |

I did tons of business with JGY ten years ago, and never had an issue. I put over 60,000 miles on my redtop before I sold it, without issue. Bought tons of parts from them for that car... had them install differentials in the car... LOTS OF BUSINESS.. and NEVER an issue...
To be fair, I live close enough that I get to go to the shop anytime I buy anything or deal with anything. But I always appreciated having them close to home.. especially living here in the mountains. I do appreciate the information though, I'd be curious to hear about some of the experiences regardless. And Thank you! Im loving having another S-Chassis!!

Subed! Been in this scene since 2002 and picked up my Zenki in 03 and had the SR swapped in the fall of 03. Nothing against the current trend in the S-Chassis scene but its nice to see someone who isnt following the bandwagon per say. Currently building my car for weekend fun and 1/4 abuse....no drifting for me as well.

Ive been discussing suspension setups with Feal.. Look like I'm absolutely going to order a long travel setup. Im trying to decided on whether to go with 8k-5k Swift Springs with helper springs to aid in droop, or go with a 6k-4k setup using just tall Swift Springs on the long travel bodies. I want something that is going to stay planted on rough, bumpy roads and keep me from lifting tires. The owner believes that the 6k-4k setup on long travel shocks would do me fine! Im going to iron it out with him tomorrow. He said this would be the FIRST long travel setup he has done on an S-Chassis... EVERYONE wants to go super low and flush, he says... LOL I just need to do some measuring and make sure that I will be able to go low enough... I do know that I want it sitting at least 1.5"-2" higher than it is now... OMG.. My LCA's have to go UP from the subframe mount to the spindles as it sits... talk about effing up your suspension geometry...

Well, I can cross a few things off the list
Picked up: OEM Shifter OEM Transmission Mount Turbo XS Type H-RFL Blow Off Valve VHT Wrinkle Red Valve Cover Paint VHT Real Red Brake Caliper Paint I really think I have a boost leak coming from this cheap, knock off BOV.... I also desperately need to figure out what this shimmy is between 55mph-75mph..

I just ordered them actually. Long travel shocks, with Tall Swift Springs. 6k in the Front and 4k for the rear. He said it would likely be a 10" spring in the rear and a 9" in the front I believe, but don't quote me on that. This setup should help keep me planted on the rough roads we have here in the mountains and help me stay planted on the rough AutoX courses the BRR-SCCA runs as well. I wanted something compliant, and something that had enough droop and compression to keep the car from bouncing and hopping around. The car should have 5 and 5/8" travel. For a comparison, he said my STi with Feal 441's (the standard kit with short shocks) would have had only around 4" ... So im gaining roughly .8" of compression and .8" of droop. The car should soak up the imprefections much better too! Im super stoked to get them. The only draw back is the car can't be slammed with the long shock bodies, but he says it should still be able to go 2.5-3" lower than stock, which I plenty for me. D2 coilovers will be for sale soon!!! only 3-4,000 miles on them. Super clean.

Jgy... i took my old up there so they could fix my hacked up wiring harness. They did a good job on that and we're really helpful at all times. But about a year ago i ordered a 'blitz' cone filter and maf adapter fromthem for my rb20. I got the order on a Friday while I was at work, and I worked weekend shift 13 hour days, so I just assumed it'd be the correct item. Opened the box Monday and it's some bullshit filter with a garbage looking ebay maf adapter. So I call them and they say I should have called them the day of, they can't refund me nor swap out the item because I can't prove I didn't get it. If i wanted to exchange the item I should have called them the day of. So I just suck it up and call it a lose and won't do any more business with them. Here's the kicker, I go to put that shitty adaptor on my car and guess what? It doesn't even fit. I call them again and they tell me to drill some holes in it. Customer service at its finest! Seems to be the story is if you order parts from them they will fuck you over, but if you're able to go in person they'll help you out.
nice car btw and I hate the hell a flush/poke shit. If you can't leave your damn driveway without tearing your bumper off, I'd say fuck even driving the car. Looks so stupid too. and it's awesome being behind these guys when they take 10 minutes to go over a damn speedbump. |

Thank you!! im loving it! Yesterday I installed Stock S15 motor mounts and a Stock Transmission mount... SOOOOOOoo much smoother. Today, I'm fighting with installing the stock shifter while it's in the car. Part of me wants to disassemble the stock shifter and see if I can change the orientation of the lever... That way 2nd and 4th are closer to me... and 1,3,5th are not quite so far away... Has anyone done this?? to me, the levers seem as if they bend the wrong way, which is what my main problem with this short shifter was.... the reach for 5th was ridiculous when it seems I could have the lever bent back towards me and be more comfortable.

Ummm NO, I found a much better solution. I wasn't too far from the wheels, or the pedals, the bend in the shifter was my only reach problem, and I actually have some fairly long arms. I prefer to keep my whole body comfortable, legs extended, back straight up, and my arms at about half bend. I was able to reverse the shift lever in order to make it bend back towards the driver instead of towards the front of the car. After installing the stock shifter, stock trans mount.. and stock motor mounts.. it was entirely different car!!! Too different... SOOOo.. My biggest beef was the shifter orientation.. how far forward 1st, 3rd, and 5th were... SOooo.. I dissected the stock shifter and reversed the lever.. Well.. That felt much better, but not good enough... Next, I reinstalled the Circuit Sports Poly Trans Mount.. That was an improvement. But the stock shifter still wasn't cutting it, even though I did like that it came back further after I reversed it. Next, I dissected the Circuit Sports Short Shifter. I was able to reverse the lever in it as well. So now, I am on Stock S15 Motor Mounts, A Circuit Sports Transmission Mount, and a Circuit Sports Short Shift Kit with the Shift lever reversed for better reach.. MUCH BETTER!!! No longer is 5th gear out of reach. The shifter is still a bit chunky, but this is pretty familiar to me having owned an STI for 5 years with a TIC ultimate shift kit. Next up is to get this steering wobble from 55-75 figured out!!

See, that's what I thought when I first bought the car, but then I went and picked up an OEM shifter and it was in the same orientation ??? Either way, it's all good now! I for some reason knew I didn't remember my s13's shifter being that far forward.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's Jason they told me to refer to as Tony Hawk. He does kind of look like him. It sucks these guys are so knowledgeable, but so willing to fuck people over...if i ever deal with them again itll definitely be in person.
Figured I'd share my experience with them. |
