clutch problems, 93 ka24de

Ok so im driving to the gym with a buddy, and I'm getting on the highway. Shifted 3rd to 4th pretty fast, then all of a sudden my pedal feels like that I have to press it down farther to disengage the clutch. And then I eased off it, and it still felt like it kept getting lower for me to press down, kinda like air being in the line. I checked my fluid and its full when I pulled over at local quik trip. My buddy pumped the pedal and some pressure built up. Now I'm curious to what you guys might think it could be? My clutch pedal I used to be able to press down bout 2-3 inches, like hardly at all. Now its almost doubled In how much I have to push down the pedal to like 6-7 inches is what it feels like. help guys!

Are you running a stock line from your master to the slave or are you using aftermarket? If your using steel braided line then it might be flexing

No its an aluminum line that was put for a 5 speed conversion. Been on this set up for the past 5 years. I also check to see if the slave or masyer cylindera were leaking and couldnt find any drips.

Have you checked to see if the fork is bent? Get a friend and check to make sure its engaging correctly.

I would start with the Master cylinder, Unless it is leaking fluid from somewhere... If it is, then replace what ever is leaking. The master cylinder is responsible for pumping the fluid through the lines to the slave cylinder. They wear out internally too and dont adequately pump fluid. Master cylinders dont have to be leaking to be bad. I doubt that it just built air in the system from out of nowhere just because you did a few hard shifts, unless, once again its leaking from somewhere... Other than that you would then probably be looking into your clutch, throw out bearing, and linkage. But thats gonna require you pull the transmission off and spend more money, time and labor than a brand new master cylinder would cost. Start with the cheapest stuff first.

I agree with loco. Could be the MBC. Start with the easiest stuff first and then go from there.

How would I know if its not engaging properly? I can still drive on it just only thing that changed was where you feel the point of engage/disengage, in the travel of the pedal.

arent clutches bad when they start slipping? Can they just change the feel of the pedal instantly?? I also do have a rough vibration when i go from 2k-2.9k rpms that just started happening a week ago. Idk if thats a clue but I'm assuming its the tranny mount or carrier bearing. I also have clutch chatter that when i press the clutch the noise stops, when i let go it starts the little noises again.

If the clutch is slipping then yes, that would be a sign that the clutch was going bad. However, what he's saying is that the components could be going bad, specifically the clutch fork.
As far as the little noise you're describing goes, the first thing that came to mind was throw out bearing.
Personally I would try to bleed the clutch before buying a new master cylinder, because those things are expensive. And as everyone else stated, look for leaks.

Yes, they are bad when they are slipping or its not engaging properly, and it will change pedal feel. You didnt mention all the noise and vibration before.... Then If thats so I would just go ahead and pull the transmission. You may have some broken/bent forks on the pressure plate, bent linkage, or a bad throw out bearing.

yea the vibration is real strong, like rattles the dash type. it feels like it may the drive shaft bearing going out again. or maybe the tranny mount. if i have a bad linkage then will i have to get a new tranny? im looking for new clutches right now.

has anyone heard of south bend clutches/dxd?

No you wont have to buy a new tranny, clutch forks and the ball are very common to wear out and bend. They are very easy to buy a replacement

Dropping a tranny in a s13 is actually pretty easy.... I dont suggest doing it alone becuase its just not safe. But for example I do it alone all the time by myself with no help.

^ Uhhh what? gtfo baz180. Dont take it to a shop bud, do it yourself. Its not that hard, and you can use the internet for reference. You will be way more proud of your car if you do the work yourself. You can do it!! (:

well mine is not leaking. and recently yesterday and today, the pressure is letting out high in the pedal or low. like it was back to normal, and i didnt do anything to the car. then all of a sudden im going somewhere and then it feels like it never messed up. then i'm driving, and it starts pressure low again. then today is does the same thing but was fine for like 5 hours. then bam had to press almost to the floor again. im thinking mayhave air in the lines, i dont know how but i'm gona bleed it first. and if that doesnt fix then it may be the slave cylinder, but its also not leaking and looks fine, but so does the clutch master cylinder. im gona change the slave and see if it does anything happens. i will check back in after those have been done tommorrow.

always start at the bottom of the ladder.
you already mentioned that 'it felt like there's air in the lines.' so first step is to check for leaks, which you did. the next step is to try to bleed the system. 5 years is enough time for possible air/water accumulation. after that, would be a rebuild of the cylinders. if you can find the parts, a rebuild of the internal parts is cheaper than replacing an entire cylinder. besides, the internals are what receive wear, not the chunks of metal (cylinders) they are housed in.

im having a similar problem on my z32. i did all of those steps, AS WELL AS a clutch pedal adjustment. the next thing is to drop the transmission to inspect (& replace) the clutch fork and pivot ball. similar to randy jordan. but yeah, bleed your system and replace it with new fluid.
