Nissan Driveline Gurus check in. Diff ID and help needed
Basic premise is that my current VLSD is shot. I was a one tire fire out at my last event so I need to upgrade what I got to something that actually works.
So first off I just pulled the diff from my car and took a bunch of pictures. I am truthfully not sure what diff I have exactly?! The previous owner did most of the driveline work and I was told "everything back there is R34 GT-T... subframe and all". Well I kind of doubt that as the R34 GTT manual I believe came with a helical diff, and this one is definitely a hardly working VLSD. What I can surmise from my pictures is that it has the longer snout, it is 5x1 output shafts (unsure of spline count, I didn't pull them out), it is a VLSD, and I'm pretty sure its a R200 (the R230 IIRC is considerably bigger). Anyone know exactly what rear end this is? TopAngle1 TopAngle2 Bottom Numbers Cast on Top of Rear End Numbers Cast on Bottom of Rear End Input Side (Clearly shows 5x1 output) Back So this all leads into my next question... What exactly should I do? I think I could probably get an older J30 VLSD and it would match what I have now, however then I am left with another old VLSD that probably will work for shit. I honestly have been thinking to just buy the Helical Quaife ATB differential. Yea it is expensive, but they are really what I am looking for. Does anyone know if the R200 based diff from Quaife will work with what I have? Do I have to open it up and check to make sure I have a specific ring gear or anything, or are all R200 differentials the same? This is the quaife I am looking at: Nissan R200 Quaife ATB Helical LSD differential - Quaife Engineering Thanks in advance for all the help! Last edited by WhatsADSM; 07-30-2009 at 12:23 AM.. |

What you need to consider are the important things.
If its a r200 any lsd for the r200 will work. Now, the output shafts will need to be correct though, for the lsd your getting as well, they will need to match your axles. So, get a lsd, see if your shafts work with it, if not get 5x1 shafts from viscus equipped car |

The one pictured is either an S14 ABS R200V with J30 output shafts or an early J30 R200V with an S14 rear cover. The 5bolt shafts are 92-94 J30, but the flat cover is definitely S14 or later J30. Early J30s had a finned cover.
Most of the J30 diffs I've sold/installed work well since they rarely saw a lot of abuse, at least not the type the same unit from a 5speed 240SX would see. Though it's not the best unit out there, for $200 it's an easy upgrade from an open diff.

First off thanks for all the help!
FWIW, I went out and pulled one of the output shafts. It is a 29-spline 30mm shaft. So that got me to thinking that the Quaife ATB would work with what I have, however I did a lot of searching and it appears that the "any R200 diff will work with any R200 setup with your output shafts of choice" isn't true. In fact there have been some posts indicating that the Quaife differential is designed only for the open differential, and if you use VLSD output shafts (which is what I have) then it wont work. The core of my problem essentially is that I want a helical differential, in an R200 along with axle shafts that will take a good amount of power. The car road races a lot and traps 133mph at the drag strip in a 3000lb 240 on slicks (so probably in the upper 500whp range).... So please correct me if I am wrong here, but it kind of sounds like my ONLY option would be get an open carrier use a quaife and then get really expensive DSS 240sx style (3x2) upgraded axles. Otherwise I should be able to use the carrier I already have (or an open carrier) with an S15 helical LSD and again get the expensive DSS axles. There does seem to be some indication that the 5x1 axles that I have now are in fact stronger than the standard 3x2 240 axles, so I wouldn't need to get the stronger DSS ones if I kept them however there is no helical diff that will work with them so it sounds like I will have to convert back to the standard 240 axle pattern and then get upgraded ones. This sound right? For now (since money doesn't grow on trees and those DSS axles are $1000+) just as project RDM stated, I may just finish out the year on a new early J30 rear and hope for the best from a junk yard. |

We already identified it a while back.
