Gasoline leaking constantly
Hey everyone I need a few pointers and help on why my car keeps leaking gas. Let me start by saying I'm a pretty lousy mechanic so if this is something simple please dont be too rough on my questions.. okay, the car is an 89 chassis with a 97 KA in it. First I'll need to know exactly what the heck this actually does..
because when everything is hooked up accordingly, It leaks from the bottom end of the hose that is inserted to the frame of the car.. I recently replaced this canister thinking it was the reason to my leaking troubles before, but nah.. shit's still leaking. Once in a while the car slightly shakes and the Idle falls down to 400 rpms at traffic lights, then at the next red light the car is acting fine. here's a pic of where It leaks with all hoses disconnected.. The hose with the long bolt sticking out is the fuel line that sits below my airbox, which then connects to the canister. I don't know why but It constantly leaks and has pressure even as the car is off, the battery disconnected, and fuel pump disconnected.. why does it keep pressure and a steady flow of gas? even with no power to the car? Any suggestions? here's a pic of the top of the canister for reference. Anything would help, thanks a lot.. I'll check on this a little later.

That is you EVAP canister... it's function is to collect fuel vapors and purge them back into your engine for combustion. The line on the bottom goes back to your gas tank on the top where there is a check valve.

The gas tank constantly emit fuel vapour. You have to vent these vapours or else the tank will explode. In the olden days, the factory vents the tank directly to the atmosphere and we're all good. With the advent of the EPA, you can't vent the tank to atmosphere any more. They use the EVAP charcoal canister to trap fuel vapour in the charcoal. When the engine is under light load, the canister releases vapour into the air intake for combustion. You are leaking because you are not venting the canister into the intake. When the canister is full, the canister overflows out the overflow hose at the bottom. This is the correct way to plumb your canister: * fuel tank: hook the vent line from the fuel tank to this port. The fuel tank vent line goes up the frame rail, around the brake lines, down the driver side frame rail, and to the canister area. * purge: hook this purge line to the intake manifold. check your FSM for location. If you have question on your motor, let us know. * dist vc: hook this line to the vacuum port on the TB. Check the FSM. Ask if you have questions. * the hose at the bottom of the canister: this one can be routed to the factory location at the frame rail. This way, when the canister overflows and drips, fuel will drip harmlessly into the frame rail and away from other components. That's it. See if you can make it work. If you end up not wanting to run the canister, make sure you vent the gas tank vent line somewhere. Plug up the vacuum port on the TB and the purge port in the intake. Good luck. Quote:
