I can't find anything out about any of the older Datsun Z cars, like the 240z, 260z, and 280z/zx. I'd like to know what engines were used in these three z's, and the specifications of each, if possible. And what years they were in production. If anyone knows any good websites, that would really help.
There is a 260z for sale by my house. It appears to be in great condition for it's age, and still runs good. The asking price is only $500, too. I'm probably going to get it, I'd just like to learn a little technical info, first. Also, is it true Nissan used turbo engines in these? I know there are V8 kits are available for these cars, but I'd like to find an origional turbo engine and build it, just to be an ass. Thanks for the help, guys. --luke

L24, L26, L28 are the engines.
www.zcar.com www.zhome.com Those are a few sites you can get info on them. The 280ZX had a turbo engine that can be swapped into earlier models. |

Damnit CA18Guy I had a long post and then you moved the topic Oh well time to retype.
Now I only know a little but, here it is. The 260Z is the rarest and my favorite looking imo. It was made in 1974, but is said to have the most problems ( probably a lot less with a new RB in one ) I also know that the ZX's were made in the early 80's or maybe maybe 79... They are also a lot heavier. The ZX's were the ones that had turbochargers available from the factory. Thats about my extent of knowledge. There is a place near my house called Z Specialties, they're pretty cool. They have at least between 45-60 Z's. I might buy a 260 if the price is right.

ok ask and ye shall recieve
1970-mid 72 240z 2350lb car 2.4 liter 6cylinder L24 engine putting out 150hp, mid 72 weight of the car increased to 2750(same weight as the s13 hatch) 73 was last model year of the 240z same engine but with flattop SU carbs instead of round tops.still150Hp car weighed in at 2900lbs 1974 only model year of the 260z . 2.6 liter L26 basically the most versatile of of L series six's . Had a L28 size crank and rod with 2.4 liter size pistons giving it a broad flat torque and HP band engine put out 160HP but the weight of the car had gone up again. 3000lbs 1975 debut of the 280z carburated version 2.8 liter L28 engine putting out 170 HP again though the weight of the car had gone up it now weighed in at 3150lbs i.e. Nissan had turned the American version into a pig. why ? federal crash safty standards that were phased in in the 1970's here in the states. In Japan the Z or Fairlady got the bigger engine options but stayed in the same weight range of the original 240z. in 1976-77 Nissan would introduce the first fuel Injected L28's . in 1979 we would see the first 280zx again the car got heavier and more luxurious it would also soon get the first of the Z car Turbo setups with the L28 Turbo. Unfortunately I do not have HP figures for that engine because . At that time I was still playing with 240z's and everyone was either building NA engines or putting V8's in (Scarabs). The Turbo engine craze had yet to catch on here in the states. Over the course of the next decade that would start to change . Ah but thats a whole nother story

well shiq , those are sports car racing weights on that page you cited . I am citing production weights and my numbers are correct as well as the fact that page has a lot of misinformation there was no L28 in 1971 but that page has a 71 240z race car listed with a L28 . Also some of the horsepower figures were off as well . The guy that put that page together should be taken out and shot. There is so much misinformation on that page due to the fact he is putting out statistics for cars that were raced not street vehicles . If your going to challenge something you need to do better research than that
