Last night I noticed my tail lights wouldn't turn off after I turned the head lights off. I stepped on brake pedal, nothing happened as well. I am not even sure the brake lights are working. The head lights will turn off and on but the only way the tail lights will turn off is if I disconnect the battery. Is it a switch or relay?

its the brake pedal stopper. The brake light switch is affixed next to the brake pedal. on the Pedal there is a rubber stopper or plug which hits the brake light switch. As time goes on the rubber wears out or down and the stopper will fall out, leaving the brake light switch in the on position despite the car being turned off. This is what you need.

but i think its the tail lights not the brake lights. The light that is above the others in the middle is on as well.

Try the above suggestions first... then troubleshoot the rest moving forward.

If you have nylon sticky tabs those are good for fixing the brake issue till you get OEM ones, cut them into small squares and its a easy application under the brake pedal I stuck it on a screw driver and pushed the pedal in then stuck it in, let the pedal back and it pressed itself, have not had to remove them for OEM ones (4 months later).

Mine did that when my fender well wiring harness rubbed through. All kinds of weird things started happening, especially when I drove through puddles.

Glue a beer bottle cap on the pedal and be done. Then rejoice in fixing your car with beer

Best fix there is for this problem, if you track down the proper part to replace it it will just end up breaking again in a few months like mine did. It seems they are just new old stock and get brittle just sitting on the shelf.

i managed to get a short bolt in that hole and tighten it with a nut on the other side. it was a tight fit but it works. now mines a metal stopper and i won't be having that problem~

you guys are some stupid fucking idiots. I have a surplus of these bumpers, not because they break often... but because I wanted spares. NOS parts are not old and brittle. If thats the case, why purchase new weather stripping?

If a 2.50 dollar part is expensive then maybe you shouldn't be modding your car to begin with. It seems like no one that has 240's care about taking care of them. They just blow money on mods and stuff then wreck it or get rid of it before half their project is even done. Its embarrassing dealing with insurance and when I tell them I have a 240. Its like oh.. not a big deal to fix.. lets just try to get out of this as cheaply as possible. Hence, I'm dreading this week after getting rear ended this weekend for the 6th time whether or not the insurance is actually going to pay for a new bumper or they are going to try to say just get an aftermarket or remanufactured one. I'm sure if it was a 350z or bmw like the car that hit me was they wouldn't even attempt doing that.

Be careful with using pennies/bolts etc. If the brake pedal switch is not adjusted properly it can apply pressure to your brake pedal and cause your brakes to lock up. I replaced mine with the factory nylon part because it has a little give to avoid this.

BTW, the bumpers are NOT new old stock. They are still currently being produced and are equipped on MUCH newer cars. Cheaping out with a penny or a bolt is just stupid, cheap, and lazy...

I had this EXACT issue on my car shortly after posting in here, ironically. I ordered the $3 part and fixed it properly.

When I bought my car someone had already done the bolt and nut mod. I found that out when randomly a bolt fell from under the dash and my brake lights wouldn't turn off.

I used one of the interior plastic plugs that fit perfectly in the hole and has been solid for over a year.
