Road Racing LSD

Hey Guys. I'm currently in the process of switching cars from a 92 Sentra SE-R to an 95 240sx. I really want to take the 240sx road racing but i would like to get an lsd since mine doesn't have one. I've only been able to find info on lsd for drifting but not road racing. Anyone know what kind of lsd would be best for this?

helical LSD's are best for road racing.

your options for this are:
1. Quaife - Direct bolt in like any other aftermarket LSD. - ~$1200
2. S15 Spec-R LSD - Certain parts required, and custom machine work required. $200-500

A VLSD is your easiest option. they are a little laggy to engage because the fluid has to heat up, but work fine. They also wear out, unlike gear driven lsd's

I have the Quaife in my race car and highly recommend it, but I would hardly call it a bolt in.
The Quaife is a direct replacement for you stock (non-LSD) gears, but to rebuild the diff properly, you need to make sure carrier preload, pinion preload, ring and pinion alignment and depth are within factory specs. Also, it is always a good idea to replace all factory bearing and seals when you're in there. This job took me about 10+ honest hours of labor to get perfect. It is certainly a job you want to rush. If everything is not perfect, your $1200 LSD won't last long...especially in a race situation.

It depends on what level you want to take your race car. If you want a full-on prepped to the max race car, I'd say go with the Quaife and drop the $$$. If you are looking for a occasional track car that sees mostly street use, some of the Nissan factory LSD (R200V) would be okay and MUCH easier and cheaper since you could just replace the entire pumpkin.

i have a 2 way nismo sss racing lsd.
cost me 75 bucks for a pro install (had to swap internals and do that pinion/gear business w/ bearings...whatever)

anyways, i say quaife or vlsd if you are road racing! a 1.5 lsd does it too, but a quaife is best, lifetime warranty too!

Oh you got a 2 way nismo sss lsd? Would that work for road racing as well? The reason I ask is because I might be able to get one of those.

Thanks for the info. I actually did see your post before i'm new to the rwd world so the whole lsd isn't something I focused on much before. It's just taking me a while to register all this info in my head like 1.5, 2 way, vlsd, mechanical, clutch. Hey I noticed you're in irvine. If I get this lsd do you think I could go to the same place you did and get a good deal on the install?

You got the deal of the century! Doing the full internal swap is PITA!
Where did you get it done? I'd ship it anywhere to get it done next time for $75.

Even $250 is a good deal since just new bearings and seals will run over $150 and the shims are $10+ ea. Some of the local race shops would charge over $1000 to properly install a new diff in your housing (and that's not including the $1200 for the Quaife.)

When I bought all the bearings and seals for my diff, I asked the dealer how much they would charge, and they wouldn't even touch it. They said they just change the entire thing out and toss out the old ones.

VLSD is OK, but from my experience, sometimes it doesn't work. specially if you are taking turns slow. it does one wheel wonder. VLSD could be good for road racing, but never try, but if you auto-x or drift, It's worth to pay 700-1000 for mechanical one. when you hit a gas. it just locks. I bought my mechanical one for 350 2years ago, but that thisng is disapered from market. It really works great. It helps me a lot for drifting/auto-x. I heard it was made by Cusco, and they put their own name. VLSD is going $250 and it's better than open diff. It's all about your wallet.
