just signed the petition. While a petition might be good you might want to get the mayor where it might hurt him. Get about 10% of the VOTING population to send him letters, email, calls to his office. Give him good arguments, such as an increase in street racing etc.
and mention that you, your family and friends, don't agreed with the shutting down of the place and that you will be force to vote for someone who will support you.
it's a hassle but it works. My econ teacher in high school wanted better services for high school students such as buses and better protection during after school hours in the ares surrounding the school. As expected they ignore him, but when he had a voter registration drive and about 10% of the voting population was related or was a student. they suddenly agreed to work with my teacher.
Just a possible idea.
