What fluid to run for power steering?
I have a 1993 240sx and want to flush the power steering. I have seen people recommend using dexron iii ATF for power steering instead of normal power steering fluid. What would be better to use, ATF or normal PS fluid?

If its a manual transmission car, I always use ATF
As everybody knows, all 240 leak power steering fluid. theres nothing quite like the feeling of somebody asking you why your car leaks ATF when its clearly got a manual transmission and 80W gear oil in it. I never tell them my secret Just act surprised |

lol use whatever kind you want. Hydraulic fluid in general will work, like for a forklift or vehicle lift or something.
I'd use a regular fluid because technically the particle size distribution should be larger and less conforming than synthetic therefore it might leak less. That applies to engine oil but I am not sure about ATF... never really thought about it |

I prefer atf
1. its red so you can find the leak 2. atf detergents I hear will clean the pump/lines keep em clear 3. something about seals becoming swollen 4. its cheaper, maybe even in the ls swap I am using atf in the ps system one time I had to put it into the clutch master to get home won't hurt anything. worst it can do IMO is deteriorate or swell some kinda rubber and cause a leak or deform a hose. But at the same time, if the rubber was that close to falling apart, then you just dumbed down the immune system in order to find the virus, so you can cure it. |

ATF, able to handle high temps better, detergents keep components cleaner/lasting longer, the cheap stuff tends to be less expensive than cheap power steering fluid...also is great for cleaning behind the vanes in the pump making it quieter!

It's not "people" recommending ATF. Nissan recommends ATF. The cars were designed to use ATF in the power steering system. Powersteering fluid is not correct for these cars.

Pumps are pretty reliable on these cars, ive run them dry, with ATF, with PS fluid. or a mix of the 2 with lucas. haven't had any problems. Just don't over do it with the lucas
