S15 differential woes. need part numbers for rebuilding purposes

So, courtesy nissan has apparently lost access to the Japanese FAST catalogs.

First off, is the S15 differential housing itself different from the S14 ABS housing? if it is NOT then i should be able to just order the crush sleeve, seal, and pinion bearing from nissan for that application. Otherwise i'll need to get in touch with someone with the Japanese FAST catalog in order to get part numbers necessary to swap my 3.69 ring and pinion into the S15 diff someone sold me that has a 4.10 in it.

I have over a thousand dollars worth of diff parts because alot of people cannot tell me what will work and what will not work.

I'll tell you this, an S15 3.69 ring and pinion will NOT work in a J30 housing. I figured since both diffs were ABS and R200s that it'd be POSSIBLE, but after disassembly, the pinion shafts are different as well as the bearings. So that was a no-go.

I'm getting same part number for J30 and S15 differential pumpkins.

What most likely is happening is the S15 pinion spacer is not as long as the J30/S14 spacer, as well as the washer. The bearing will also have to be from the pumpkin you are transferring to.

Pretty much when swapping a ring & pinion over to another housing you will need to use all of the components from that housing EXCEPT the actual ring & pinion.

so to install the s15 helical and ring/pinion in the j30 diff i'd need the j30 pinion bearing installed on the s15 pinion, as well as all other parts necessary for the j30 diff? can you get me the part numbers for s15 pinion seal as well as pinion bearing and crush sleeve? i currently have:
"loose" 3.69 s15 ring and pinion.
complete j30 lsd (housing/axles and all)
complete s15 helical diff (housing, stub axles and all)
complete S14 non-abs diff (in the car running, has s15 helical lsd but stock s14 r&p)
empty s15 housing with driveshaft flange.

if i can get the parts necessary to install the s15 r&p in the s15 housing i have, then i can just sell AAAAAAAAALL the other differential parts i've got. but in order to do it that way i need these parts numbers. thanks for checking that though.

Unfortunately, there are a bunch of different part numbers all with various thicknesses for those bearings and washers. Not sure how you would figure out what sizes you need, probably have to go through the steps if you were to install everything from scratch as per instructions in the FSM.

edit:
When installing the 3.69 r&p into the J30 housing you will need to press out the J30 pinion, and swap all of the bearings and washers from that pinion onto the 3.69 pinion gear. You will also need to use the 3.69 shims from the s15 housing into the J30 housing so that the backlash on the ring gear is what it was when it was originally in the S15 housing before removal.

Sounds like you got yourself a big mess if you don't have everything organized and labeled, lol.

Why use a J30 housing? I have a s15 HLSD installed into a s13 open diff housing with my stock s13 R&P with no issues.

Because he most likely has an S14 and wants to use a different final drive gear ratio than the stock 4.083. He already has a S14 open diff housing with S15 HLSD as indicated in his previous post.

Hmm. i really need someone to just give me the part numbers for the s15 parts lol. thatd be easiest. i'll keep hunting for them i guess, as i really have no idea what year j30 diff i was sold, only that it has 6-bolt flanges on the axles. Otherwise im sure those part numbers vary between years.

If you can give me the thickness of the washers and bearings (in metric units) you need I can give you part numbers.

alright, if swapping the ring/pinion out of the complete diff, then it'll just be the pinion bearing/race, the crush sleeve, the pinion seal. the ring gear SHOULD be alright (side adjustment shims?) i wont know if its out of spec until i install it all, but the crush sleeve and those parts will definitely need to be replaced.

The pinion bearing/race SHOULD be the same between J30/S15. You will need the side adjustment shims as well from the S15 housing. There is no crush sleeve, instead its a pinion spacer. There are two adjusting washers one before the pinion spacer and one after the bearing/race both of various thicknesses.

no crush sleeve??? well that changes eeeeeeeeverything. Theoretically i should just strip down the 4.1 S15 diff and then see about reusing the spacers for the pinion shaft and the current side shims and just see how it all spec's out. I think thats what i'll do. I'll let you know if i end up needing some shims or something, but im sure that s14 r200 side shims will still work.

Yes, all helical from factory are 3.69, his particular S15 HLSD had a 4.11 installed by someone else.

The seller didnt specify the gear ratio and since i figured they were all 3.69 i didnt even ask. when the part showed up it had "4.1" written on the top of it and sure enough it is a 4.1 ratio. Just my luck on that lol. Im going to just drop the assembly off at a driveline shop monday along with my 3.69 ring/pinion and see what they can do. if they can remove the pinion bearing and swap it to the other pinion, or maybe the bearing on the 3.69 isnt even in too bad of shape. either way, its going to be quite a challenge to find those part numbers in enough time to change those parts out before i'll need it in the car.

The S15 ring and pinion should be a direct fit into your complete S15 assembly. They should be able to just move the pinion bearing in the S15 diff to the new pinion for the 3.69 gears. If anything, there may be a need to make adjustments and the spacers/shims part numbers vary by thickness required.

Part numbers for the various shims/spacers can be found in the FSM: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/240sx/S15/S15/pd.pdf

The S15 differential is identical to the S14 w/ABS. If you need a new pinion bearing, the part number is 38120-10V00 - Inner (one that's pressed onto the pinion shaft) and 38120-13210 - Outer. Those part numbers are the same for the J30 diff as well.

awesome thanks! yeah i just dropped it off (the S15 4.10 HLSD, complete, as well as the 3.69 ring/pinion) at a local high perf driveline shop. those part numbers will come in handy, so thanks ALOT! strange though that the s15 pinion wouldnt fit/drop down into the race already in the j30 diff i took apart.

Shop informed me today that the ring and pinion don't match apparently. the ring installs on the hlsd perfectly and the pinion mounts in the s15 housing just fine but then the hlsd doesnt fit into the housing due to the ring and pinion. its a 46:13 set and they are indeed that many teeth. wonderful. here we go again.

for reference, the "3.69 S15 ring and pinion" ive had for a couple months laying around was installed in place of the 4.10 set that was in a complete s15 diff assembly i bought that hadnt been taken apart ever. straight from japan. and i checked to see if i mixed em up with the j30 ring/pinion or the z33 ring/pinion. i have not. im picking it up from the shop tomorrow to look it over myself and see what i can find out. i doubt they are doing it wrong, but you never know.

So where did this 46:13 set come from? My guess is they don't have the appropriate pinion spacers / washers set when they went to install the pinion gear into the S15 pumpkin. Assuming they used what was on the 46:13 ring/pinion.

Its all good. I mixed up the many many differentials i have at the shop and my 48:13 ring gear was in with the 46:13 350z diff.
