8kg front 6kg rear to stiff for street use?
Here goes. I have been looking into buying coilovers and have come to the conclusion that megan racing coils are the best for what i want to pay. A good friend of mine is telling me that the spring rates are to stiff for street use and will be VERY unpleasant.
I have searcehd for reviews on this but most of them are more of a discussion of wheter or not the megan racing coils are the same as the Apexi N1 dampers (i think that was the correct model). So what i want to know, from those of you who have the megan racing coilovers, is: how is the ride, is the adjustablity of the dampers enough to make it a comfortable street ride as well as a decent track setup.

Coming from lowering springs and shocks/struts it is much stiffer. If it is just a street car then I would just go with spring/shocks but if you are going to track it a bit go with coils. Also, the roads around here aren't very well maintained so some roads are almost unbearable. I have mine set 12 clicks from the stiffest because the softest setting seemed too bouncy. I haven't really had any time to fool around with them but they feel okay. They are definitely not for someone who's looking for a smooth ride. If I were to buy another set I would buy ones which are more known for their streetability. Maybe the Kei Office(the ones that are for street use) or SilkRoads.

and some coilovers might have even better ride than a shock/spring or stock, because the dampening is precisely matched to the spring rate. My friend's S13 hatch w/ JIC FLT A2's (8/6 i believe) felt much more comfortable than my s14's RS-R Sus Down/AGX combo and on par if not better than my other friend's stock S14.
This, of course, with dampening at lowest settings. |

You get used to it. It's more your passengers. I've had a couple girls complane that their boobs hurt after a while. You shouldn't have a problem but your passengers will.

i have 8/6. at first, the front didn't feel stiff enough, and rears felt like bricks. now, after a month of lots of driving, they feel fine. my girlfriend has even gotten used to them, and she hated it at first.
p.s. boobs bouncing is good. |

we need to install a camera in your car and I need to come hang out with you and your friends. Jic FLTa2's are 7/5 now, maybe 7/6. They originally came in 8/6 but I think that SCC article made them change their mind a bit. I could go research it some and give definite answers but I would rather cause a ruckus

a lot has to do with ride quality (most of it is the strut strength). KTS's are 8/6 and i have no problems with my pos roads on my softest setting and my tires are supposedly really hard (though they are 55 tall). now, try to run around the same roads with em on full hard and you're gonna buck like a tazered bronco.

Yeah, when you are driving it doesn't seem bad but when you are the passenger it seems much rougher. I have rode passenger in my car and I much prefer driving. Also I hate how my bro hardly makes an effort to avoid pot holes.

s13 w/ jic flta2 8/6 daily driver,
clean paved streets like o.c, then it's fine crappy streets like l.a, pretty damn annoying, pretty stiff, rattle, rattle, rattle, even the freeways, you'll get used to it yes, but long drives will start to annoy you, feels like you've just did construction work with a jackhammer... |

One of my friends runs Zeal Function D's (hard spring rate option) on the street. It isn't bad at all. Just on road trips you have to stop every 45 min. to piss because it beats up your kidneys pretty bad. I think those rates are like 10/9 I'm not sure.

If you plan to do much hard street driving or driving on tracks that are more bumpy, you may want to look into softer rates as well. Stiff coilovers don't do well on anything but the smoothest surfaces, you just skitter all over the place. You want the coilovers to help keep the tires in contact with the road, and at times softer is better.

I think you have that mixed up, if you drive around on tall sidewalls you will be bouncing up and down as the sides allow more for flex. Whether they be on soft or stiff.
Believe me I have done both on KTS while you were trying to sell that riced out Mercury of yours... I have found driving in both Orange County and San Bernardino (University area, $$$) that they can be harsh for others, like i had this chick in my car ans she wouldn't shut the hell up about the ride, and how hot it was. I can take the harshness and noise, my friend has Zeals with Brides and jesus now that is Hardcore. I drive on Full stiff maxed out and slammed KTS on 45 sidewalls. Its somthing else, but I love it. i think youll get used to it in no time. it sounds like your more worried about ride quality than rates. if you want to go with ride quality, dont get teins and get some jics or cusco...
btw, lose the "D" in your sig...unless if you swapped and im just being an asshole; if so, then negate <

You'll get used to the stiff ride, what really sucks is going over bumpy roads while taking a turn...I found 8/6 too stiff bc of that. Tein Flex will give you a lil more roll but it is easier to control going over bumps. If you're gonna be more on the track than on the street then it would be worth it.

MRs are very good coilovers for the buck, so youll definitely be enjoying the performance/handling too much to notice the mediocre ride...
