Reverse Staggered Tires for Drifting

Tried searching but didnt have any luck.

Are any of the avid drifters running a reverse staggered tire setup? Meaning wider tires up front than the rear. I have been running 235/45/17 all around but for 2014, I have a 255/40/17 up front and plan on running a 245/45/17 in the rear. Does anyone forsee any issues with this setup or know how the car will react with this setup over a square setup.

What im trying to obtain is maximum group up front and wanted to run 245/45because of avaliable and price point.

I'm a s13 couple chassis with a LS1 that has basic bolt on. 7k / 5k spring rate on coilovers.

the idea makes sense but i don't see anyone ever talk about such a setup. There must be pros/cons pertaining this setup.

I would like to know more concerning this. any pro difters care to chime in haha

I've done it. No problems. Not sure why you have so much front tire though, are you road racing? I run 215's up front with no problem. Look at Aasbo's car, dude runs like a 205 in the front. Smaller sticky tire = more angle.

in my experience, a large reverse stagger makes it easier for the rear end to outpace the front, and spin (in a slow-down / transfer scenario). basically the front will slow down quicker than the rear. If you're sticking to similar compounds though, i dont think the 10mm difference you're talking about will cause a problem.

I am surprised you're running a 255 up front for drifting though, idk your setup but that's usually going to limit your angle a bit, most s13 drifters run a 245 or smaller front tire, and just use a stickier compound if more grip is needed.

(experience: ls1 s13 with 245 bfg kdw2 fronts/ whatever out back... i try to find the biggest spares i can to feel balanced)

Thxs for tr info and sharing ur experience.

I too was thinking that the 255/40 would hinder my angle but from eyeball it, it still looks like I'm getting good angle.

As for why I went with a 255/40, I had these around and thought about trying them out for maximum grip as a transition. It was a huge improvement when I went from somewhat bald 225s to a new set of 235s and was hoping from a similair change from a 235 to a 255.

Can anyone confirm that Asbo is running a 205 or something narrow? Seems like guys like Vaugh Gittin, Dai are running like 255s or 275s...

I haven't had much luck findin out what these guys run.

Most of the time I run 235-40 fronts and 215-45 rears. Suits my style just fine although ok decel the rear does like to rotate quite a bit. And rears are cheap in that size.

what do you mean when you say "ok decel the rear does like to rotate quite a bit" do you mean the rear like to over rotate and easier to spin out?

what engine do u have an how much HP are you putting down?

Redtop sr, 285 hp roughly. And yes, on decel, since the front has more grip than the rear, the rear likes to try and overtake the front. Just means you've gotta be a step ahead with your steering. Personally I like the feel.

Well I guess it helps I get more angle haha. I was thinking the wider front would make the rear come around quicker.

I also plan on going with a s14 subframe and don't plan on running a rear sway bar so that will also add to the change. I currently have a white line rear sway bar but won't b able to run it when in go to the s14 rear subframe.

don't do too many changes or you won't know what made the best change for your liking. On my car I have ran 235s up front and 215s in the rear. Worked really well but I am ka-t and I run all new tires.

Why wouldn't you be able to use the whiteline sway bar? I have an s14 subframe in my s13 and I run S13 tanabe swaybars. They fit fine.

I've always ran 225s up front but I've always used sticky Dunlop Star Specs up front or Nitto NT01/NT05s. Rears is always a mix bag, it all comes down to how much power you have. If you have alot of power/torque, you want wider tires to keep it pushing. You go too narrow/less traction setup, you'd end up spinning out more. If you have no power/stock KA, narrower is better since its easier to break it loose.

Humm. Being that the s14 is wider I wouldn't have thought u could use a s13 sway bar in a s14 subframe. Enjuku racing even list different sway bars for s13 and s14.

I'll give it a try b4 I sell em.

It's a 2.7 litre inline 4 making 800+ whp. Anything is possible with resource. And it looks like Asbo is running a 225/45 up front and 265 n the rear.

more than 215 or 225 up front is not needed and just seems to be correcting driver error. run a reverse rake as far as suspension goes but not tires. keep the rear squatted and steer with your right foot. and guide the car with steering wheel. if you are understeering then you need more angle and throttle input

make sense but does running at 235 and up out you at a disadvantage other than potentially limiting your angle?

And yea reverse rake in suspension does help. My car handle 10x better on this setup. I have ERA 1 rear drop knuckles and 6k rear spring rates to help me squatted.
