S13 - LS7 vs 2JZ For Pro-Am And Beyond...
Hey guys, I'm going to be doing a pro am build this coming winter with my S13 to compete here at Evergreen Speedway's pro am series in Washington state. I've recently sold my R35 GT-R to fund this so I have a sizable purse to work with as far as building the car goes, which most likely won't even get closed to being totally used.
I'm currently running this grassroots season with a 1UZFE (Lexus V8, 190whp - 210whp~) and KA trans and will need to step up to something more capable for pro am. The car itself currently has a ridiculously long list of modifications, the only thing it's lacking for being competitive pro-am wise is a better power plant. The thing I'm tipping back and forth on is, LS7 motorset itself is $9,000+, Aristo 2JZ is $2,500~. The ls7 power curve is far better than a JZ, but I don't want to be going through an LS7 motor every season, as that's too expensive of a motor for me to justify buying a new one per season. I hear people running 450+whp out of stock block 2jz's for season after season, are LS7's capable of the same feat? So, opinions? Recommendations? |

The dry sump oiling on the LS7 will help quite a bit with longevity. The short answer would be I can't say I have personable experience with it but, yes, the LSX engines are some of the most durable engines made. Plus you don't have to worry about turbos or any other extras. For the power figures you are talking about, you may also want to consider an LS3 with a cam swap and tune. You should be able to get close to LS7 power figures for less money, and you can still get the dry sump.

I would personally run the LS7 because you would be putting a bigger turbo, injectors, tune, and other mods to get the JZ to the power of the LS7 is already at...I would take the LS7 which starts at that power and offers durability since it's still stock and go from there. Not to mention the higher displacement gives you quite a bit more torque than the JZ.
