Help!! Sr20 cam install
Tdc...2nd mark on crank pulley
Both first cam lobes pointing outward 10 and 12 o'clock Exhaust gear hand tightened onto cam with chain on....back end of end sticks up a little and wont seat. Do i just tighten all the cams in order...will the cam seat or will i break it? Intake cam seated. Cam gear removed with chain in place. Try to install gear onto cam, does not line up right. Do i just tighten the bolt and hope the gear will line up right? |

The cam usually doesn't seat flat on the journals until they are torqued down. Start from the middle and torque in sequence. 1.4 - 4.3 - 8 ft. lb
On the cam gear, make sure the dowel pin lines up before you torque down. I will specify: 9-10 first, then 1-8

follow the FSM proceedure for camshaft installation. You do not start from the middle.
Dont listen to anything anyone on zilvia says. Not even me. Follow the FSM only. |

I had this issue not too long ago and people gave me similar answers without really explaining. I see that I didnt put this information in my build thread here, but it is included on another forum:
"Hey y'all, I got my cams properly installed with correct timing over the weekend. I couldn't find a lot of information on the problem I was having, maybe most people remove the cam gears and that makes a difference? Im not sure, but here's what I had to do for anyone who might google search. I had the bottom shiny link on the timing chain already lined up so I just worked both cams under the chain and sat them in the journals, I was able to get the two shiny links matched up to the dots on the cam gears pretty easily. The problem was, there was a lobe on each cam that was touching a rocker arm (#2 cyl and #3 cyl) so I wasnt able to tighten down the cam caps without it being REAL sketchy. I ended up putting the 27mm socket on the crank pulley and rotating the entire assembly probably about 20 times until a point when both cams were seated enough that when I [hand] tightened the front cam caps the rear of the cams weren't sticking an inch the air. Then I just simply followed the FSM specs for tightening order and torque. After hand tightening, the first step is like 1.4 ftlbs I believe, after that is around 4 something (it ends up being like a quarter turn with the wrench after the first step) and finally its like 8.6 or somewhere around there. I then had to rotate the entire assembly another 20-30 times to get back to TDC where the timing marks were at the top so that I could install the CAS. I haven't installed the CAS/tensioner yet, but I left it there so next weekend I can get it done quickly " Also, so you dont make the same dumbass mistake that I made and have to do the install twice...please see below: Here's my cams finally installed and back to TDC (well, half a turn away from being at TDC, we stopped moving the assembly once the links lined up with the dimples) Now......for the learning experience that hopefully helps others. I have to take the cams back out lol. Totally forgot to install the "cylinder head inside sub bolts" as the FSM calls them. you can install one no problem but the one underneath the exhaust cam is impossible to torque down due to the extra length on the ex. cam that the CAS connects to...maybe if you had some crazy cool rotating ratchet wrench that I dont have. P.S. there are no torque values for those inside sub bolts in the FSM. Well shoot, my picture codes arent showing up when I click edit over there and Im at work right now (no access to photobucket).
