SR Removing SR transmission from the bell housing?

My tranny finally gave up the ghost tonight on my way to work. It was stuck in 5th gear making grinding noises then the car stopped moving(reving freely) and the shifter wouldn't bulge at all so after struggling a bit with it I finally got out of 5th but will only engage in 1st and 2nd can't get the shifter to go into any of the other gears.

Anyway I digress, my question is -- Is it easier to remove the transmission from the bell housing and then just swap the new one on the old bell housing or should I just remove the whole thing intact?

Thanks Zilvia
-Dee

I would remove the whole thing because you never know, you could have broken a flywheel bolt or something. and it's much easier to swap the bellhousing when it's out of the car hahah

You have a point, I'll just do it the right way. I just hate screwing around with those two top bell housing bolts their a pain in the ass to get to even with extensions.

Much easier to remove the transmission intact as one unit.

To separate it from the bell housing I believe you have to remove bolts, and a snap ring from the inside front cover anyhow.

P.S. My dad plays that jamaican song in your sig nearly every xmas

Correct you have to remove the whole tranny in order to break it apart

and yes there is a snap ring under the front input shaft cover

the RTV will be tough to break away, just dont forget to seal it with RTV when you put it back together, Ive found the Permatex "Blue RTV" works real good

Ratcheting wrenches help so much with the tranny bolts, but they are $$$

Thanks I'll pick up some before re-installation.

I didn't run into any problems until I got to the top two those are effing impossible, I've dropped the tranny down some by unbolting the trans-mount but I still can't get enough leverage on those suckers.

I've found it easier when you have another person helping you with this. Get a couple different extensions to make it at a comfortable length to where you can reach the bolts, have a swivel on the socket so you can grab it on at weird angles. Have your buddy feel the bolt, then put the socket over the bolt and you start cranking away.

That is how I remember doing it

You can also use the Permatex Grey RTV. It's rated for high torque applications and Nissan recommends it.

Nevermind I finally got it, I forgot I bought a whole set of ratcheting wrenches couple of months ago -- used those for the two top bolts and it came right out. I can't say I'm looking forward to putting it back in though I'm 5'6" and about 135lbs and fucking thing weights half as much as me.

Now it's just a matter of deciding if I want to use a KA tranny with SR bellhousing or just find another used sr tranny.

Actually the trans weighs more than half of you, more around 3/4's. Anyways, put a block of wood under the crank pulley and jack it up some. It'll give you a better angle to slide the trans back in.

I had the same thing happen to me on my SR trans. I had to pull and I mean pull the shifter out of 5th, then I only had 1st and 2nd as well. I switched to a Z32 trans, so no more worries.

Thanks for the tip & Are the gear ratios the same in a z32 tranny? I'm surprisingly having a hard time finding any nissan tranny local to me for some reason.

^ use more extenstions till you are past the trans and you should be able to get it with the breaker bar. specially if you can jack the car up pretty good.

the KA trans has a longer 5th gear, I suggest using a ka trans with a sr bell housing.

Base model 300zx
1st Gear Ratio: 3.21:1
2nd Gear Ratio: 1.93:1
3rd Gear Ratio: 1.30:1
4th Gear Ratio: 1.00:1
5th Gear Ratio: 0.75:1
Final Drive Ratio: 4.08:1

TT 300zx
1st gear ratio: 3.214:1 man / 2.785 auto
2nd gear ratio: 1.925:1 / 1.545 auto
3rd gear ratio: 1.302:1 / 1.00 auto
4th gear ratio: 1.000:1/ 0.694 auto
5th gear ratio: 0.752:1 / na auto

Reverse gear ratio: 3.369:1 / 2.272 auto

Final drive ratio: 3.692:1 Viscous coupled limited slip differential

^Good Info, The short 5th gear in the SR always bugged me. I picked up a KA tranny today though and swapped the bellhousing. Was a lot easier than I thought just have to wait until the rain subsides so i can get busy installing back into my car.

^ no worries dude, if you have tall tires on 17's 5th isn't so bad haha

if you stumble across a 300 trans grab it though, sr/ka trannies are weak
