Junkyard Turbo Kit

I was planning on boosting my single jingle ka, for now, until I blow it, then will be looking to do a swap of some sort. Anyway, a turbo is no where in my budget right now and a swap, not even considering doing one anytime soon due to time and money.

My idea was to go to a junkyard, and try to piece together a turbo kit I could slap into my s13. My question is, what cars would have something I could possibly use to throw together my own budget diy turbo kit?? I know anything is possible, but what cars may have something that can make a diy kit come together as easily and simply as possible without heavy modification??

You could replace the hundred things that are bad about your 25 year old car before you think about adding power.

Bushings, suspension, tires, gaskets. Really exciting stuff. That stuff can be done cheap and little by little...

Those, for the most part, have already been done

only thing you'll be able to maybe salvage from another car is going to be the turbo itself. and it would probably be an old piece of crap that's too small to even be worth the effort.

Why do you want to turbo it with the purpose of blowing it? That sounds like a huge waste of money and time. And according to your post you don't even have money to be wasting. So why waste any at all? If you're going to turbocharge it then do it properly. There's no reason that if done right that single cam could last a good long while, "saving" you money in the end due to not having to swap the engine, or blow it, or rebuild it.

Sounds like you have aspirations that you can't afford. Don't waste your time doing it the wrong way.

ohhhhh... been there, done that.
You're best bet is to piece it together from used parts found online, such as in here.
Being able to weld and fabricate shit will also save you a lot of money.
It just takes some planning and a little patience.
Im a junkyard junkie myself, and I know first hand there isn't much at the JY's that can be used to turbocharge our cars. Im guessing you're talking about self-serve junkyards? If so, you'll be lucky to find a starion or conquest with its FMIC still attached to it, let alone an evo... most other commonly found IC's are tiny plastic and aluminum ones, or tiny smic. Turbos too, most commonly found turbochargers are tiny (smaller than an sr t25), have an odd turbine housing (not compatible with your manifold), and are mostly blown.
You could borrow the IC piping from older volvos, i believe some use 2.5 pipes, which is ideal for our cars (low power), but then again it would require a lot of couplers and clamps, or tig welding (expensive).
You could get a bov and injectors from a 4g63 DSM.
Other than that, I can't think of anything you could use from the JY, you're better off piecing it together from parts found in here.

Well the idea I had was to boost the single cam, see how long I could go before the thing blows, then whenever that happens pick up a dual cam since they’re relatively cheap and drop that in which is pretty simple to go from single to dual. And then have a boosted dual cam with an obviously much better swap somewhere down the lines in the future. That was my whole original idea. I wouldn’t be walking into a junkyard spending a ton of money either. I’d be spending very little and have a budget turbo kit just to Fuck with for now. The little bit of money wouldn’t effect me having enough for a swap down the line

Spend your money once, not 2, 3, 10 times.

Save all your 19 year old pennies and buy a DE and slowly put a turbo kit on it while you drive around your E instead of being miserable and selling the car midway through like everybody else.

It will be easier and more reliable to boost the dual cam

Volvo T3, Nissan Z31 T3 turbo, Sr20 turbo
SR20 fuel injectors, Q45 injectors, DSM injectors
E60 Maxima MAFS
buy a used turbo manifold and downpipe
SFAC or preowned rom tune ECU
Buy a spare oil pan to be tapped for the oil return bung

Your best bet is to find these parts online (eBay, FaceBook, Craigslist or forums) you will have more aftermarket support if you go with an SR20DET turbo.

You location says it all, ive seen s-chassis up there since I spent a good deal looking for a friend up there and they all look BEAT some kid gets a hatch trys to send it, has there fun and then wants to sell a rusted beat, semi modded car with a single cam on its last leg for 3-4k (not saying florida is any different but all the clean rust free cars running ka/sr20 boosted go all day 5-7k vs north east prices for rusted chassis and stock engine because emissions.)

Best bet is see what exactly what you want to with the car and go from there. If its just a little weekend car and your only commuting car just keep it how it is. If you want to slide it, practice stock ka, the single cams with welded diffs, rack/pinon swaps plus suspension is more than enough and if you want more power then find a spare ka block to build or other platform dont know your money situation and do that one the side till you feel comfortable its time to swap it. Then when you do, do some preemptive maintance like paint the bay, tuck a few things because chance are that engine isnt going to come out anytime soon might as well do a lot of little things.

THE BIGGEST advice I have is if you're going to do something just do it once and do it right. Not saying be super perfectionist but there is certain things in life where "you get what you pay for" and just save save save save. I tell anyone that after they get there s-chassis to be ready to slap in another 10k. 5k can easy go into an engine quick and another 5k can go easy into replacing 25 year old parts, cosmetics, aero, wheels, replacing stuff when it breaks.

No 5 speed swap yet and already talking about turbos?

You need to be thinking about priorities and the order they go in first.

Make sure you choose the appropriate clutch if you decide to boost your car. I'd say a 'White Bunny' setup would be ideal.

he didn't ask for life advice folks. he said what he wanted to do and asked if you had any tips on how to make it happen... why is everyone providing life advice? are you his mom

Grab a t3/t4 ebay log mani and figure out what turbo cars came witht hat trim from the factory. your probably gonna be ruling out all the European cars since I believe they use weird flanges.
Youre gonna want to try and grab a used apexi neo to tune, but you MAY (and its just a may and is horribly janky) be able to use the ecu's engine temp sensor to force the engine to run in its cold start mode for extra fueling for your turbo if you cant afford engine management, might be able to use some larger top feeds off a different car to get the extra fuel I know I once heard of a guy running a boosted ka and he just put in 370 injectors and that was it for engine management but again, quite janky
but the neo units are really cool and worth buying since youll probably be able to use it on the new motor as well
obviously youll need some plumbing for the turbo in the form of coolant lines, oil lines and boost tubes. wastegate etc. GO ebay or used on this stuff, premium parts would be a financial waste on something like this

and you should have yourself a ticking time bomb turbo single jingle just like you wanted right?

Youre gonna want to try and grab a used apexi neo to tune BUT... its janky and you ive heard of people getting away with plugging in purple 370cc injectors and boosting. drop your plugs 1 heat range and rune premium

Some Volvo turbos use a T3 flange.

I boosted an aw11 on the cheap once. Very possible, but the most important factor is your build skills.
The basics were an sr t25, DSM 450cc's, and a for probe intercooler. Little boost in power for cheap and fun as hell to drive.

Because we're a community and a lot of people are tired of seeing the cars, parts and attitudes go to waste.

this is what i hate about car communities and forums everybody wants to either be a total jerk or they want to be your mommy. and then provide no relevant information to the topic...
you want to be a jerk.. that's FINE, you want to be my mommy that is also FINE but please if you are going to be a jerk or a mom please please provide some relevant information to the topic after youre done voicing your opinion. (relevant in answering or providing information on the question or topic at hand)

is what OP is doing wrong, probably but thats not why this thread was started

To everyone in this thread...

When I said I was planning on boosting it until it blows, never said my plan was to use a junkyard set up. This thread is simply about if I went with something budget for now just to get a little fun out of it until I have money for real shit. For everyone who says save your money... that’s why with this whole idea, I’d be going to a junkyard and getting shit for dirt cheap. *****Just for now****** until I have the funds to actually start up a real build. Yeah I have the money, but no I’m not going crazy with motor shit for a while. I’m finishing up my 5speed swap, throwing in my VLSD, getting a quality exhaust system Bc I can’t stand the raspy ness of my eBay set up, then I’m gonna either paint it or wrap it, haven’t decided yet, then after that’s all said and done, then I’ll be worried about starting to put money into the motor. I’m not trying to make a drift missile out of it and definitely not a daily driver. More like a car I’ll take out on the weekends, or during the week when I feel like, go mess around, pull up to a car meet or two. Nothing crazy. So I wouldn’t dump a shit ton of money into the single jingle in the first place when I could pick up a dual cam for relatively cheap, and build that thing up on the side then eventually swap the two. Unless I decide to go a different route and do a real decent swap. But I’ll worry about that when the time comes. Long story short, I don’t plan on dumping any serious money into the single jingle which is the whole purpose of this thread in the first place, to just see what there is to slap together just to add a little fun. If this was the motor I planned on keeping, then that would be a different story. I’d either be going craigslist, eBay, or junkyard parts to boost my single jingle in the time it’ll be in the car. Once I do a swap, then I’m going all out on quality shit only.
