Military, contracting, teaching

I think you would need some sort of work visa, or proof that you are capable of working in japan (which goes back to the college degree and speaking the language).

You could always try to get a contracting job on a military installation over here, however you are competing against vets who will have a higher priority.

You also are not SUPPOSE to come over here on a tourist visa if you plan to work. Remember that because they will ASK you at immigration/customs.

Jobs like teaching or tutor are not that great on the local economy money is ok but your employer could end up being a douche (most likely) who uses your Visa like a bargaining chip. There are IT career field jobs from American companies that pay really well in and around the Tokyo area, just know it is one of the most expensive cities to live in.

In short and sorry if I come off rude, but a lot of people want to come over here, but they do it for the wrong reasons. I enjoy the country and have lived here for a long time but absolutely hate people who come here and do nothing but complain about the way it is. I do enjoy beating them up though!!

ya i would def take a trip there before you commit to moving its a great place to visit not sure bout living but good luck do your research take a trip and talk to some companies about jobs

If you don't have a degree the best way would be to try and get a civilian job with a military installation. I have been living there 3 years teaching with a japanese company. I have a friend who came on vacation, got a job with the local base, and has been living there almost 2 years now. Living there just all depends on the person. Some people think they will like it and end up hating it, others go there not thinking they will really like it and end up staying for a really long time. Personally I love it, but I had been wanting to move there for forever, and enjoy many more aspects of the country and culture other than just cars.

dude it is hard to move to the usa. ask somebody. its just as hard to move to other countries. Its not easy at all. i suggest going for tourist visa and just enjoy the land for what it is unless you just have that calling then proceed with your quest.

there is nothing like the usa for your retirement compared to "foreign" lands.

Check on GEOS and Nova English schools. They often have job fairs in north america to jobs in Japan.

Probably your best bet for work.

is nova still teaching? i thought they closed down a few years back. i hear the JET program is a good option but most companies look for teachers from england or australia. i think i had only run into one american english teacher in the time i spent over there but a bunch from those countries.

Yeah i would definitly take a trip first. if you are trying to live there just for the cars you are doing it for the wrong reasons.

Nova had shut down for a short period. But they are back up again and going pretty good. And yeah, JET is decent. I know a few guys belonging in that circle, couple Americans as well.

TBH though, English studies for Japanese is not at the peak anymore. Maybe 5 years ago there was a huge demand.

Speaking with a Japanese friend a month back, it seems Taiwan has a large demand for English teachers as of late. He's taking the smart route and buying up schools and re-facing them. For English teachers in however, the wages are not any good. I guess one would really have to enjoy being a abroad for the culture than making coin.

I love it here so far. Soooo much history and neat stuff to see and do. Cars are just one tiny facet in all that is Japan. Bear in mind though, I'm here because my wife is in the Navy. Therefore I have the option of working on base and being a SOFA member.

All, i have to say its very very expensive. Just for me to go back home and visit its roughly 1500 round trip. Hotel's are expensive as hell so i would estimate about $800ish for a week and i know this cuz im planning a trip to Tokyo and i refused to stay on the Air Force Base until i seen hotel prices off base. The trains are inexpensive to get around and they go everywhere so thats a plus. I've been here 2 years and love it. Its just like Toi said.

^^ need to stay at the New Sanno its not that bad and if you plan on going down there for a week, you better take at least $800.

Also OP it isn't bad, but its what you make of it!

Yea New Sanno is booked up the ass. I would rather go there because its closer to where me and my friends want to go but no every damn GI has to book it 50 million years in advance.

LOL New Year time frame and its only like 1 or 2 months out. Anyway there are decent hotels in Tokyo that cost about 5000 a night!
