Buying the car and telling your parents to deal with it is a quick way to get your ass thrown out of the house- not a wise move IMO. OP- try to reason with your parents. Since you're using your own money, but your parents want safety, you could try asking them to put up some "airbag" money and get an S14 with the extra cash. Not sure if that'd work, but it's worth a shot unless you want to pay 100% on your own, as I did. |

Even if you do get one the S14 insurance will kill you. I think I'm at 250 a month for my 96 for full coverage. Get a civic, that was my first car. Since you're 16 with a sport coupe they will get their moneys worth. Just like mine |

for now just get a sentra or corolla. if you join the service then just save your $$$ and get the 240sx then. you will have lots of $$ when you come back from going to iraq, as there isn't much to spend $$ on there!

I have gotta say that it sucks to be male, under 25, and have a sport coupe in terms of insurance.
As much as I love my 240, get a nice, early 2000 sedan (mine was a 2000 mazda 626) with a stick that gets 27/32 millage and enjoy the slightly lower insurance. I would highly reccomend that you find something stick, though, as it will be good practice for the 240 if you eventually end up with one (as I did ) or you could be lucky and in college in a city like austin where you dont need a car by the time you get the 240 and legally insured as an occasional driver of the 240 . |

Never totalled or even so much much as bumped into anything. I pay like $130 a month, liability. My s13's were more expensive, surprisingly.

That's one of the most worthless posts I've seen in a while.
I say IF, IF you could convince them to buy a 240sx, make sure it's in DAMN NEAR MINT condition (which is rare...good luck with that one). But as stated, S13's can become money pits. Seriously. |

yea 240s dont really get good gas mileage but they do have good crash ratings. especially the s13's but if you want something fast and save you best of with turbo volvos or saabs. They make insane numbers for their size. my first car was an 86 740gle wagon non turbo. it made 114hp and 138ft lbs or torque but when you took it out onto a stright it liked to haul ass. only downside was the 17/21 mpg which is why i got the 240. 19/24mpg. i really wouldnt recommend the 240 for beginners more like intermiddiates. the brskes especially on non abs s13's like to lock up, the hate traction in wet weather and the torque bands can get you into some trouble

Also, I got a discount due to automatic seatbelts...lol
If anything, show/tell the insurance company about the auto seatbelts then do a manual seatbelt conversion if you'd like. :P |

Good point. I love my s14. Greatest car I've had to date. Of course, its problems are annoying (itchy tach, blower amp is blown, windows need adjusting, random stuff), but it drives so much better than my s13s did. And the lighting is superb compared to the h4 popups.

i didnt bother reading three pages worth of posts. i just wanna say this and go.
getting an econobox isnt a bad thing. not too long ago i had to sell project de-rice (s13 coupe) for something more "family friendly" and i was bummed when time forced me to settle for a 93 tercel coupe. but i started doing some research and saving some money and making my ideas count (checking and double checking every mod i have planned, seeing if its worth it or not) and im having just as much fun with this wrong-wheel-drive econobox as i did with the s13 is drifting superduper necessary? if its not, (its not for me...) then go ahead and check out some econo's here's a few examples of econobox rides that can still be fun. (each one i list has the option to be turbocharged fairly easily) 91 4 door civic/91 civic hatch. (i love the way they look for some reason) 92-95 civic coupe/hatchback 2 door sentra (i like 2 doors better, thats why i mention it) mx3 (a turbo miata engine fits like a glove...or like a well fitting condom, whatever analogy works for you) tercel/paseo (4efte. look it up.) isuzu impulse early 90's saturn coupe in the 80's ford released a 4 cylinder mustang. some rare cases came turbocharged. look into it. ill come up with more later. the point is, while it is hard to find an fr econobox nowadays, you can still have an awesome time in an ff econobox if you plan it out right... one thing i've come to love about my terc, the only "real" coilover set-up costs over a grand. which forced me to look elsewhere and i come to discover i love shock/spring combos. having an econobox helps alot in aspects like your budget. it forces you to search for parts and during those searches, you come across the best deals. -nelson |

The answer is get a VOLVO! Parents love them because of it being a really safe car. Insurance wont be to bad since its a volvo and Cops wont be on your ass because your driving your moms car. They come turbo charged and theres enough room in the engine bay to fit a v12. You can also fit a shitload of crap in the trunk. Enough said.

wait until you have the money to do the work thats gonna have to be done on it, then wait until you find one worth spending the money on, because ur in washington, theres probably a lot of rust-buckets driving around... or get one shipped from AZ...
i had an s13 for my first car when i was 17, and an s14 for my second when i was 18... the first was rusty... the second died because i was stupid and didnt know what i was doing.... wait till u got experiance under ur belt |

I had a 240 as my first car (my old hatch) I didn't do stupid shit but I did get in a minor fender bender by following too close, you live and you learn. Also, I would actually wait until you turn 18 for the fact that you will get pulled over and then you don't have to ask your parents to go to court with you. I always felt bad asking my mom to come to court with me for a ticket as stupid as exhaust when I was a minor. Just a suggestion.

Some kind of civic is surely a good first car, as the support is great and they're quick enough with swaps, but the ricer tax on everything OEM is ridiculous.
B13 Sentras are neat, I was tempted to get one when I was replacing my first S14, but by that time I was doing some track events and the driving dynamics of FWD just didn't appeal to me. B13 Sentra SE-R would be fun even stock, and you could swap an SR20VE later on for way less than the equivalent Honda setup (K20? B20 VTEC? somewhere in between those two I'd imagine) would cost. They're just a bit hard to find in good shape. |

their house, their rules.
It is your money...but do you pay rent, do you eat their food, did they raise you? I love how kids think they deserve things because they made the money themselves without looking at the bigger picture. oh and yeah, you will wreck it.

Listen to your fuckin parents. I bitched and whined until my dad let me buy a 240 when I was 17 or 18 (I don't remember). That old bastard was right, it was a pile of shit and I was working on it more than driving it. I never wrecked it (or any car so far... oh wait, I rolled my Land Cruiser but that was offroad) but I lost my ass on it in time and money. I know it sucks balls but just get a good daily driver until you can afford two cars or one newer car with a WARRANTY.
I mean, I don't regret it anymore since I learned a lot with that car and there was sooooo much crazy shit and memories that happened but shit... I could have spent that money on fucking more chicks in highschool. Oh, and the 240SX sucks for sneaking out every fuckin night. It's loud. Oh god, fun times.
