When I drive on the freeway going about 75mph my steering wheel start to shake and it makes the ride feel unsafe. I just bought some rims for my car (17" and with wide width tires. They are 215's) Is it because my tires are heavy and wide that is why my steering wheel start to shake going 75mph or do I need to get a "Suspension Vibration Dumper"? Will that stop the shaking to the steering wheel while driving or what do you suggest I should get to prevent that horrible shake to the steering and get something that can give me good handles without feeling unsafe?

Go back to where you had your tires mounted and tell them to balance the wheels again. They did it wrong the first time.

what is a suspension vibration dumper?...never heard of it.
It could be a few things.
Your alignment might be off.
Your tires might not be properly balanced.
Your tension control rod bushings may be shot.

Wheel width/size should have no affect as long as they're properly balanced.

the tire/wheel size has nothing to do with it. i've never had a problem at high speeds with my bigger wheels /tires.

So, basically nothing is wrong except the fact that my tires might be unbalanced right? I thought they have already balanced my tires when I got them, and like one of you guys said "they must have done it wrong." I guess they did. LanceS13 I'll check out my tension control rod... Because I have a few friends with the same width tires and they don't have any problems with their steering wheel shaking... Thanks!

i had the same problem after i got my 18's on. i took my car back 3 times until they got it right. they had to use a special machine to match the tires to the rims. that was 15000 miles ago and i haven't had any problems.

i just got my car a month ago and they had put new tires on at the dealership and they are not balanced quite right. it is smooth up to 65,, shakes to 75,, once you get to 80,, car is rock solid again.. it is weird.. i'm too lazy to get it fixed,, will it hurt anything leaving it like that?..

ca18guy, My friend who is mechanic told me that I needed a "Suspension Vibration dumper" that is why I'm asking if you guys know what and if I need it or not. Guess there is no such thing...hehe. And for AJ, yeah man you got to get that checked because if you are feeling out of place while driving or you know that your car isn't feeling right get it fixed A.S.A.P...

A few things that no one has mentioned:
- if you shocks or springs are worn down that can cause vibration at high speeds
- it could also be a loose bolt or nut somewhere on your steering assembly that just needs to be tightened

but in your case groundzero, i think everyone is right in saying that your wheels just aren't balenced right.
