gt2871r .64 with external wastegate: Worthwile project or expensive mistake?
I don't intend this to be a discussion of how each works, as I understand both pro and cons of each setup...
On my Altima, I run an external gate that is atmospherically dumped - which is fine by my standards for the altima... HOWEVER On my s14 project, I was planning on running with a gt2871r .64 trim turbocharger with an internal wastegate? My question/concern deals with the reliablity of the aftermarket turbo's wastegate being 'up to snuff' with the rigors of 16 - 20 psi spirited driving... Will I be better of researching and implementing an external gate into my setup, or should I be content with the internally gated 2871??? Any personal experience is more than welcomed!! Pictures as well if there are any out there (on t 28 based setups...) Thanks again!

An external wastegate can be modified onto the stock manifold. It is not that much harder and is the route I'm going for all of the pro's you allready know. If you do the whole internal wastegate thing there is some fabrication and extra parts needed for that so you might as well save it and get something better.

truth be told, the higher the boost, the less "wastegate" ull need.
the fact that if the actuator is sprung for too little boost might give your boost controller some minor inefficiencies, but really u should only think about the efficiency lost at the dump pipe, and seperated dump elbows are readily available. why is this important? if u run enough boost, where integral wastegate doesnt allow boost creep, external wastegate on a crappy designed manifold will make u lose power. think of it this way, garrret/hks engineered that wastegate to flow evenly, with minimal change to flow directions of turbine flow, on a homemade external system, placement of gate will reverse or stall exhaust flow, causing crap boost response as well as less flow potential during wastegate operation. another problem is u might drop one specific cylinder temp. if u pull a pulse out of a single cylinder rather than all four, ull get varying egt's, which is very hard to tune. |

I'm not sure of the HKS internal wastegate coming with the turbo itself...Im not doubting, it's just somethign that I had never heard before (actually now i'm even more looking forward to having it on there if it's part of the setup!!)
Thanks for the responses guys...I never really took into account that a poorly designed exernal gate setup will obvioulsy lower performance, albiet slightly...I think I'll just keep what works well intact and use the internal gate!! -Ace
