Need a straight answer on VLSD

The individual I purchased this car from gave me a JDM ABS 6 bolt Vlsd. I've searched and can't find a definitive answer on weather or not its a direct bolt in. Guy I got it from said I'd need a drive shaft .. but it has the 6 bolt flange, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't be a direct swap. help. lol

Because you'll need a abs length driveshaft to run the diff.

or could I swap the guts without having to worry about hanging the pinion angle and shimming?

ive heard people say that you'll need an ABS drive shaft. I personally have put in 2 ABS diffs into two different NON-ABS cars. i read somewhere that because these cars are so old and developed slop from being on the road so long that they most likely have a little wiggle room to squeeze stuff in. It worked in both my situations with no ABS drive shaft needed.

you could always try, it's easy to get the diff out and put it back up if needed

awesome. I'll try it out. car's got 200 plus on it so I'm positive there's room. what fluid did you run and are there clips in the pumpkin that hold the shafts in?

Heres the lengths (first google result)
S13:
Section 1: Coming From Trans (ABS makes no Diff. in Length here)
M/T = 395.0mm (15.55")
A/T = 432.0mm (17.01")

Section 2: Center Bearing/Mount to Diff
Non-ABS = 605.0mm (23.82")
ABS = 590.0mm (23.23")

S14:
Section 1: Coming From Trans (ABS makes no Diff. in Length here)
M/T = 421.0mm (16.57")
A/T = 441.0mm (17.37")

Section 2: Center Bearing/Mount to Diff
Non-ABS = 650.0mm (25.59")
ABS = 636.0mm (25.04")

As for the slop, yes you may be able to mis match but once you change motor mounts and tranny mounts you will have zero play.

Ok, was a tight fit but it did bolt straight in. had to squeeze the drive shaft a bit. Now this diff doesn't spin as easily as the open unit .. is that normal for these???

UPDATE: Don't do it. drive shaft pushes too hard on the tail shaft of the Tranny. with about a half inch more of play, it will work.

Well the shaft pushed too far into the tail shaft of the tranny causing it to rub. I could swap them yes, but coming from the domestic realm, that usually means shimming and getting the right pinion angle. On these sealed IRS diffs can you just Yank the diff out, swap ring gears and call it good?

Yes. And add a shim if it's a higher mileage vlsd

Depends on the pumpkin. If its a factory VLSD pumpkin then you need the ABS driveshaft. If its a VLSD swapped into an open diff pumpkin, then you need non-ABS driveshaft.
