HKS SSQV V2 BOV problems
This is my first post and have found this website to have ample amount of information about pretty much everything related to 240's. However I am having a couple issues with my BOV. First off the car is a 95 240sx se, with a red top s13 sr20det, it has a upgraded walbro 255 fuel pump, FMIC, T28 upgraded turbo, 3" exhaust all the way back, Isis bottom mount manifold, aluminum radiator, and Emusa coil overs. I acquired this car about a month ago and have fixing everything wrong that the previous own did. Here my new problem: I was having a problem with my BOV its a HSK SSQV V2 (yes a real one) (and as far as i know this is the only one without adjustment) when reving the car in neutral or boosting in gear i wasn't hearing my BOV instead i was hearing compressor surge (sounded like multiple sequential blow off's and the sound seemed to come from the air filter. After doing research i found out that my BOV spring was set to high and not venting, i found this thread (DIY hks bov fix - MotoIQ - MotoIQ - Forums - Technical Area, motoIQ is about geeks and for geeks, here ya go, a geeks playground - Maintenance, Repairs, DIY, Low Buck Mods) about adjusting your spring. i went ahead and bought the 2" sprinkler head and used the spring. Now when i rev the engine in neutral and it hits around 1-2psi the BOV opens, however when driving the bov only opens when i hit max boost around 7-8pis but doesn't open for and boost between 1-6psi. This has me wondering what is going on? Oh also i have the BOV T'ed into the vacuum line off of the throttle body, it is T'ed off between my boost gauge and controller (is this a problem?)
I plan on buying another spring and cutting one to see if i can get better result. 1. Could this symptom be caused from a boost leak i can't find? 2. why does the BOV open at 1-2psi in neutral but not 1-6psi when in gear and driving? 3. Is my BOV broken? 4. I apologize now if this seems like a dumb question but when i rev my engine in neutral and before i hit boost around -5psi i still hear a faint compressor surge (i think) should the BOV open to stop this noise? In other words does a BOV open when not in boost but above the normal -21psi at idle? This is my first post and i am sorry i if it has been put in the wrong place, or if i have broken any of the forum rules. If i can supply any more information let me know! i can take pics or vids of any of the problems if need. thank you very much for your time in reading/resolving my problem Dan Last edited by Kzoodan; 07-22-2012 at 10:30 AM.. |

Is your car driving fine?
There is a big nipple and a small nipple on the top part of the throttle body. Small nipple should be for FPR only. Big nipple can be for boost gauge and BOV. I would try just running direct from nipple to the BOV without the gauge and controller hooked up to see if you get different results. Boost controller should be sourced on the hotpipe somewhere.

When you say the boost controller should be sourced on the hotpipe, i have mines coming from the waste gate -> manual boost controller -> T -> throttle body nipples. Is that right? |

Hey guys went ahead and made some videos thought it might help someone help me out!
heres the first: sr20det in a s14 - YouTube this video just shows how i have everything ran (my boost controller, boost gauge, and fpr) here the second: sr20det HKS SSQV V2 BOV (compressor surge?) - YouTube In this video i did what "Killer2001" said to do and only have the BOV hooked up, in this video you can hear the bov going off but you can also hear what i think is compressor surge. please help! Well i have done more work on the spring and it seems to work better now, i still have a slight surge when revving in neutral. Tmro i want to add a nipple to the hot side inter cooler pipe and use that for my boost gauge and boost controller and then connect the BOV to its own dedicated nipple off of the throttle body (the bigger one). Does this sound right? Could having all of these (controller, BOV, and gauge) cause the BOV to not function properly?
Sorry for all the dumb questions but now i see that if i put a nipple on the cold side and use that for my waste gate (boost controller) it may help with my surge because i believe that it will only read 0 psi or vac only when the pipes are clear from the bov. Does this wound right? and input would be great! Dan Last edited by Kzoodan; 07-22-2012 at 07:59 PM.. Reason: added more questions lol |

More work has been done and after messing with the new spring i have it works 100% better! i still however need to tap my hot side so maybe this will completely eliminate my compressor surge! will keep everyone posted!
