89 240 shock question

I just bought new springs for my car yesturday and when i got home i decided to put them on. When i was done puting the shocks and springs on i noticed that my two rear shocks wernt sitting ryt. I mean they were in but at the top where you have to turn the bolt to tighten the whole thing down was up on both sides. now when i push the car down from the back it goes up and down like theres nothing keeping the back of the car down. you know how the rear shocks when you get them new has those things covering them so that the rod doesnt come up? thats wha making the car like that. but i was woundering how can i fix it?
