Ok, for some reason my fuel gauge does not register on my new car. The needle is completely dead. Is there a connection I need to check or do I just have to trash the entire cluster?

Theres a connection someplace. I suck at this so I don't know why im telling you.

HOWEVER instead of tossing the whole cluster why don't you just swap out the fuel gauge part of it?

Previous owner probably disconnected the damn thing!!. Check the connector at the back hatch. Pull the carpet up & look for a square or circular cover. Remove the bolts holding it down & lift it. You should see two plugs going into the gas tank. Check to make sure none of the wires have been cut. Also take a continuity tester & check the line between the dashboard gauge and the harness by the tank. Make sure the line is good & there are no shorts. Download a FSM...(I think I may have mentioned a link in a previous post I respond to ..you posted it in the Chat section) & follow the procedures for checking the fuel guage meter in the gas tank.
Anyhow, hope this helps...

thats weird, cause i have a problem with my gas gauge also except for when my need is at half, my gas tank is actually empty! I went to the mechanic shop that we have been dealing with for about 10 years now and they checked everything out and they said everything should be fine so i have just gotten used to knowing that when the need is getting close to half, its time to fill up.

cool idlafie, I'll check that out when I get a chance. And thanks again for that link to the FSM, that was my next step although it probably should have been my first.

Ok I checked the connections in the back by the gas tank and didn't seem to have a problem there. But I don't have a anything to check the lines for ressistance with. Although I'm starting to think that its my gauge, because the needle sits entirely to low below the "E", lower than it would even if the car was turned off or the tank was empty and its completely dead. So I guess I'll start pulling my dash apart later.

Did you pull the cluster to check and see if the fuel guage harness plug is connected properly? There shouldn't be a reason for there to be a short if the car is relatively un-tampered with. If that connection is good, source out a new guage cluster for the fuel guage....saw an entire cluster on sale at ebay this morning....take a look for it!!! I think the price was 10.00 plus shipping so far. Good luck.

Can someone give me instructions or post a link to instructions for the easiest way to remove the cluster? I can't seem to get it off over the steering wheel and can't really make heads or tails of the removal instructions in the FSM. Thanks

1. remove the upper steering column cover - 4 screws.
2. remove the guage bezel (plastic section wit your light illumination dial in it)
two screws in the top, going into the dash board towards the windshield. And two snaps, one on each side.
3. lower the steering wheel as far as it will go with the adjuster.
4. Slowly work the guage bezel out by pulling the top clear first then sliding it out to the side. Just be gentle and it will come out.
5. 3 screws hold guage cluster in place - remove them.
6. pull the guage cluster out just enough so you can look behind it to see the connectors.
7. The fuel connector is the one on the far right (s14), far left I think (s13).
8. disconnect it completely then re-connect and make sure it snaps in place.
9. Double check all the connections on the back to make sure they're snug.

Option: Get some aftermarket glow guages to install on your guage cluster since you got it out!!!

Good luck. This really is a no brainer once you do it the first time.

Well it looks like the gauge is fixed and I'm good to go. I never actually got around to pulling the cluster out, but on a tip from a friend I pulled the fuel pump out and check the floating sensor. Which was my problem, the sensor wasn't connected properly to the pump. Thanks for all your help.
