rb25 highflow turbo conversions

Who here has used a highflow rb25 turbo? Are you still happy with the choice?

I see this in early applications, but wonder if current "high value" options are a better investment (I.e. Holset, hypergear, kando, etc).

I have searched and read plenty (mainly on a certain Aussie forum). Just want to hear what Silvia has to say.

My power goals are 350hp with great response. Would rather have more midrange than top end.

I looked into the hypergear and it sounded cheap, but after contacting them the price ended up being just as much as a new garrett turbines. I went with a used HKS2335 for a fraction of the cost and I have to say I'm happy and the car spools and drives like a normal car with more balls. I ended up with 380ps @1.2bar before the clutch started to give. Reading the Aussie forums I gather most of them like highflows due to their strict import/mod rules. If I were to do it again I'd go with the GT2835 model. With the setup I have now, Iv'e raced most on a strip or circuit mildly tuned GT-R's with no problem and hold my own or walk them. And some more than mildly tuned I could stay with the pack.

I seen good result for Holsets turbines also, but I wanted something PNP.

I think it comes down to how much you want to spend and whats available on the market. Since my setup was on a ER34 sedan family car, I couldn't go too wild, and the GT2535 was a good choice.

I have a Hyper Gear Turbo, Very impressed with the quality, It is a little pricey but I wanted a turbo that bolted up like stock without having to buy an manifold or custom make a down pipe or oil return.

I've only ran it for a short time due to the Stock ECU not liking more boost.

Hyper gear does have a thread on here showing their products

I've read a review of Kinugawa from NASIOC and people are saying Kinugawa is an offshoot of IHI/MHI (Mitsubishi). So its OEM quality turbo. People seem to think that Tomei is selling rebranded Kinugawa turbos.

This kinugawa turbo retrofit is looking more and more promising.

What we have is a stock compressor housing that has been milled
Aftermarket turbine housing that is Nissan specific and approximately 8cm in size
Essentially a TD06 20g rotating assembly.
Upgraded journal bearing design
Uprated WG (ordered to suit)
Installation lines and gaskets
Seems to be completely bolt on

Under $900 shipped

There also seems to be an upgrade for the turbine wheel (9 blade v/s 11 blade) that may speed up spool.

There has to be some compromise in the compressor map/efficiency on this, but seems like a gem. Just limited implementation thus far.

Any turbo gurus have an idea how these wheels may perform together

Compressor Wheel 52.5 / 68 mm (Trim 60)
Turbine Wheel 65mm Exducer (Garrett Stage 3)

Unfortunately Australian labor market isn't as cheap as Asian markets, and making turbochargers involves many hours of engineering work. Now the au dollar is down against usd which helps making our pricing alittle better.

Hower ever performance wise our high flows has the best response, highest output and highest power to boost ratio. As well as much better relaibilty against asian competitors.

Details dyno readings if our latest r33 high flowed turbocharger and r34 turbocharger is included in this thread.

Thanks Stau,

Will look these over. Have you sold many highflows to people over here in the States?

In terms of high flows there are very few people in the states have purchased our service, mostly because a donor turbocharger has to be sent in for high flowing. We now can supply donor turbochargers for $50AUD additional, so they are no longer required from US.

There has been a recent update in the high flow profile. Both them them have gained roughly 10% in power. The latest results are in the link posted earlier.

Have you guys thought of having a distributor stateside with inventory on hand.

I would love it if you and AMPerformance http://www.amperformance.com.au/ could team up and develop a bolt in turbo upgrade and downpipe combo for left hand drive 240sx's.

For any one to stock a bunch of turbochargers then resale them is a pretty big investment, and can take a while to sale out. Its easier to order from us direct online.

With the left hand drive 240sx that is for a KA24ET right? if you've got a stock turbo from it I can certainly high flow it.

I mean left hand drive 240sx with a rb25det swap.

I have an AMPerformance downpipe that clears the steering shaft but the diameter of the turbine tube is made for the stock rb25det turbine.

I have a Pureturbo highflow, with a larger turbine, so the AMPerformance downpipe has a smaller diameter than the turbine which I'm sure is robbing some power.

If I had to do it all over again and Hypergear and AMPerformance had a package that would work together I would have gone that route.

Granted I'm only one perspective customer.

Hey BoredEE

I am curious on your impressions of the Pureturbo conversion. Any dyno results?

I'm pretty happy with it, some turbo lag (over stock of course) but its reasonable.

I was getting 315WHP on a dyno dynamics at 12lbs.

Was shooting for 350WHP at 15psi but the fuel pump couldn't keep up. Need another dyno session.

Power wise the car is done, I need to increase tire size to take advantage of it.

I would say a highflow turbo is the best option for reasonable RB25 power levels.

The car made 350WHP at 15psi.

It hits full boost at ~4700 rpm.

I'm not 100% thrilled with the low end. The tuner didn't like that my car was too quiet, I have too much back pressure in the exhaust: the aforementioned turbine exhaust diameter change on the AMperformance downpipe and I have a cat.

So I want to correct some of those issues, not knocking the turbo by any means.
I didn't expect it make miracles but it reached my power goal for the car overall so I'm pleased with the turbo.

back from the dead. I purchased a Kinugawa turbo. Once I get a baseline dyno, I will install and start tuning. Hopefully this will happen in the next few months.

how's the turbo performing? I'm debating whether to get this or the pure turbos rb25 upgrade. BTW I'm in Lynnwood too!

Sent you a PM, still haven't had the turbo installed. Should get baseline done next month. Pure turbos is a great alternative also.

I'm actually still happy with the stock RB25DET turbo and good tuning, but who couldn't use a just a little more?

Currently at 330whp, 342ft-lbs @ 18psig on CA91 and has had 30k trouble free miles. 18psig will hit as early as 2800 RPM so low end is awesome. (that's where the 342 ft-lbs comes in, then tapers off a bit as backpressure goes up)

Other mods are 3" DP, high flow cat, HKS cat back, Greddy intake and FMIC, custom piping, Q45 TB, AEM air filter, FPR, MAP, AIT, BCS, & Series 1/2 Hybrid ECU, Walbro 255, RC 750cc's.

Have not been wanting to upgrade as I love the response of this setup but will be going E85 soon (FF sensor in hand) so I can put some timing in. (i'm at about 12 deg at 18spig now)

Looking for 400hp (or slightly under) with little to no loss in response and know the stock turbo won't get there.

Subscribed to see what other find out.
