You guys ever have a problem getting the oil filter out under the intake manifold of the sr20 to do an oil change? shit...the first couple times trying to take out the oil filter for me was HELL. took me about an hour to get that thing off with a clamper....

well guys, i dunno if this has been discussed, but i got the best easiest way to get the damn thing out. and wanted to share.

without having to get anykind of tool, you can actually get the oilfilter out with your bare hands. All you need is rough Sand Paper. jsut wrap sand paper in your hands, stick your hand in and use a tad bit of strength and the filter will twist off as easy as a bottle cap (because of the friction). you can do the the same thing to twist a new one on...try it guys!

Ever notice Fram has the sandpaper attached to the end of their filters?

once i couldnt get mine off, so i took a long screwdriver and hammered it through the filter and twisted with that and it never came off, just tore it to hell and made a big mess. I ended up getting it with some pliers

well yeah. of cousre, this is for people who dont use fram (like me). I use the K&N filters which barely has any kind of grip.

HAHA...well your problem is solved. I used to have to do the same exact thing you did. You will NEVER have that problem with simple sandpaper. trust me gaurenteed. If its a lil tite, youll ust have to use a bit more strength to twist it off. Works everysingle time for me and takes about 30 seconds (literally) to get off.

bare hands still work for me. i'm not strong by any means. but sand paper is a good idea.

anyway..it would prolly be wwwaayyyyy easier to do it from the underside of the car if you arent doin it that way now so u can use both hands.

K&N oil filters have a nut on the end so you just go get a 1" socket and viola! it comes off easy well worth the extra few dollars and i wouldnt trust a fram anyways~

just a little hint for you guys, when installing the oil filter, just snugg it on. people have trouble getting them off when changing the oil because they tighten them too much, all you need to do is put them on snugly and then the engine vibrations while tighten it to what it need to be tightened at.

vibration can go both ways, either tighten or untighten

uh not really. follow instructions --tighten until SNUG, and THEN a 1/4 turn more. simple.

my friend's engine is gone because the oil filter came loose.

hand tight (15 ft lbs/torque) is all you need, if u aer to incompetent or worried then take it to jiffy lube

They use crappy paper end plates that blow out. Cut one open some time. I'll stick with my purolator Pure one.

There's my brand... Working for Pep Boys Ive learned the advantages of a good filter and albeit I dont "support" Fram, I love PureONE.

I just use the K&N oil filters. That 1" nut is a lifesaver.

absolutely right, i read that somewhere too

never use fram-- im lucky, "Motomaster" filters are rebadged quaker state filters and theyre cheap

The sandpaper on the fram filters cracks and then flakes off for me. It never was useful, but thats ok cause I rtfm and snug and a 1/4 turn. Never had a stuck filter except those that come in cars I buy.

i jus picked up a Mobil 1 filter..its a larger volume filter and its supposed to be a finer filtration. but its like 10 bucks. hope its worth it. i used to use jus fram...but i was like..its time get get better stuff. anyone else use the Mobil filter??

Fram sucks balls! Don't use them, especially since you're all performance oriented people. A good filter for a good price is the Napa Gold. Mobil 1 and K&N filters are the cream of the crop, but $$$$$

dude...your such a macho man. i want to be like you.

when i first got my SR20, the guys tightend it like crazy. i had to poke a hole through them and had to use a tool, stuck it in and turned it....it was a disaster...thats why i found out a way to get it off easier for some of you that have the problem. rather than having to spend an hour trying to pry it out, im just saying that sand paper is a quik and easier way to get it out. plus, the oily hands make it hard to tighten. solution = sand paper.

if you can get them out with your bare hands, good for you. im a lazy person, i do things affectively with the least effort .

thats totally awsome, i do the same thing too by taking a pry-bar and proping the car on a jack, then push the oil filter by getting leverage against the motor mount to put a dent in the filter and catch a side to spin it CCW. I get it out in 2 min.
