So it rained for the past 48 hours, straight. I have alot of soiler rust on my fastback, but I never had a problem, cause it was always garaged. Now that I am in college, I see how bad it is. My entire spare wheel well was full. Like 3 gallons on water I had to "scoop" out with a cup. My carpet is soaked too. It was bad. I took apart the hatch and duct taped it fromt he insdie so it doesn't look too ghetto, but I doubt it will help much.
That spoiler is gone by Januaray, I swear. Jeff

Ouch. I thought mine was bad, but mine doesn't leak yet. It still looks pretty nasty, though. It rained all day thursday and friday, pretty hard, and I don't have a water problem. I'm going to replace it before it starts leaking. The concept of a rusted out spare tire well scares me

When I saw trying ot get the water out, I was looking for a drain plug. I don't think there is one. I got thinking "Maybe I'll just let the rust eat through and drain itself." But then I thought about exhuast getting in there and ashyxiating (sp?) me. I sealed the hatch pretty good, but it won't last. First time in 8 months it has leaked, and it rained hard. Of course, it is normally garaged. Now I am debating my options. 1. Find a white hatch with a wiper but no spoiler. It would have to match my no faded white paint and be in good condition. 2. Bondo. The downside is I hear the Bondo normally "pops" out once it sits. Normally slamming the hatch shut "jars" it loose. 3. Bondo it myself and cover up with that 180sx wing I had my eyes on Or this wing for $250. But yeah, watch it if you have rust. The water was sitting there for 3 days. No joke, I could take a bath back there. And my carpet smells back there too. Jeff

I'm looking for a new hatch, but my car's ugly as it is so it doesn't bother me if it's the wrong color.. though I'd prefer it if it were red or black or grey (so it matches the interior). Then I'll paint it when I get around to painting the whole car...
Edit: oh jeez, I just went out and looked and it turns out there IS about half an inch of standing water. I had to lift up the tire to see it (with the tire strapped down it's covered). Oh well, definitely new hatch time. I guess I'll make some calls to junkyards. I don't want to go through winter with snow sitting on the holey hatch lid. |

OK, I looked at it again... Pulled that fuzzy carpet panel off the bottom of the hatch and checked out the inside with a flashlight...
There's no water stains on the inside of the carpet panel, so water just isn't coming in that way. The rust looked a lot less serious from the inside, only a slight bubble on the passenger side corner. Since the water's obviously coming on on the driver's side, I think the hatch isn't my immediate problem, though it will need to be replaced or repaired eventually, especially if I'm going to keep it parked outside for the foreseeable future. I think I have a good old fashioned taillight leak on the driver's side. NBD, I guess. |
