240sx in the dirt
Here are some pictures of my first rallycross. I juse barely pulled off a 1st place against some pretty good drivers.

Nice!
Can I ask about your rallycross setup vs your autocross setup and perhaps driving techniques. What Tires and what pressures did you run? I am prepping my car for my first rallycross this weekend. It should be nice and mudddy. -Matt

I ran the same shock setup for both.
My koni's were set about 1/2 stiffness all around, with stock springs. My tire pressures were 32lbs fr/rr. Rallycross is a good time to learn left foot braking. Just keep your right foot planted, turn WAYYY before the curve and tap the brakes occasionally. Okay, you can't really keep your left foot planted the whole time, but you shouldn't have to move it off the gas pedal. You will probably do very little braking. For preventive purposes, I'd remove the front plastic spoiler if you have one.

Thanks for the advice, I need to head out to a gravel parking lot sometime this week and try to remember how to left foot brake from my automatic driving days.

Look at that picture and imagine a 6-12" dirt buildup in front of your car. As long as you stay on-line, you'll never hit that, but turn late just once and you would end up hitting one of them.
I don't know if it would hurt the spoiler or not, but I was going to take mine off to repaint it anyway, so I thought it was a good time to do it. Our field wasn't too bumpy, mainly because the sand in this area is easily moved around by a car. If the dirt where you're at is harder then it might be bumpier.

I hadn't thought about the dirt brim on the outsides of the corners, I guess I will just take it off to be safe. Thanks again.

that looks like so much fun. i really wanna try it, but i have no previous experience. is there any way that you can practice for it. is just finding a large field and getting a feel for the "off road" driving a good idea? i always kinda assumed a RWD car wouldnt be too great at rally-x, but i guess you proved me wrong

Oh yeah, I forgot to post it here
I finally went to a rallycross that wasn't cancelled! I have never had more fun in a car! It was a very new experience for me to have my car oversteer the entire track. On pavement, I can usually only get a feeble kick of the rear, but out on dirt I was frantically countersteering the whole time! Also the track was HUGE, the course was over a minute and a half long(for reference, most of the autoXs I have been to are 50-40 seconds). There were lots of nice features, long sweepers, hairpins, switchbacks, slaloms, elevation changes, and off camber turns. I don't claim to have ever been "drifting", but I have accidently gotten my car fairly sideways on an autocross course, and this was completely different. I could play around with the different textures of the track, easily using the loose dirt on the outside of the turns to create oversteer, and could link the turns together with ease. I was doing this event purely for fun, the times haven't been posted yet, but I am sure mine wasn't too great, the open diff made it quite difficult to get traction, there was actually only one small portion of the track where I didn't have pure wheelspin. I didn't get a whole lot of pics because I didn't have someone to be my photographer, and the camera I had was running out of batteries, but here are some. The only casualty of the day was my driver's side inner fender, the wheel bottomed out and ripped it clean off, scared the crap out of me during my run. I also got to drive a friend's AE86 in the dirt, and he got to drive my car, he pulled of one of the most sideways drifts in my car I have ever witnessed, it was truly awesome. -Matt

Sadly enough, the autocross and rallycross seasons are over till the weather gets nice again If you are interested in autocross, KC has one of the best regions I have been to, 2 different clubs put on autocrosses: KC region SCCA: http://kcrscca.org/solo/solo.htm and Crown Autocross Club: http://crownautocross.org/ Keep an eye on those websites for a schedule next year. As for rallycross, you are going to have to like to drive real far to get to the events. The Pittsburg,Ill event that I posted about was a little over 4 hours away from Columbia, so it would be around a 6 hour trip from KC. Most of the events are around that far away. I still think its worth it. Again, no schedule up for next year, but check out http://www.rallycross.us/ for any updates. Hope to see you out at some events next year, -Matt

It'd be nice to think that Missouri had something that Cali didn't, but a quick search proved that California has better rallycrosses too
