Spring rate ?

Ok im running tein basics on my s13 with pillowball mounts, this winter i plan on throwing in my VH45. So the question is, Should i up my spring rate to compensate for the added weight there will be? cause theres a guy selling tein 10K springs for cheap on here. or would that be too crazy with the rear only being 6K? the coils ride nice and do their job at the track now. just curious of others opinions on the rates.

Thanks

You need to compensate for whatever weight difference there is ... first check there is one !
V8s are not heavier usually. The gearbox usually is though .6k rear should be ok anyway... maybe get some 7 or 8 fronts.

BTW tein basics sucks ass, maybe more than ebay jobbies. So you might want to change them anyway. As far as springs go, swift > others, and they are not that pricey (but again, no point in using quality springs on crap dampers)

Thanks I hear you, I bought these like 7 years ago when I didn't know much, I think they are comfortable tho, but I wish I went with something better, live and learn I guess right...

I'm guessing you've got the typical 8/6 spring rates. That should be fine with the VH. Yes you MIGHT eventually want to change the spring rates, but I would try it like it is first.

to be fair years ago there werent as many coilover options so tein basics didn't look so bad by comparison.

also as croustibat said there may be no weight difference at all, it may seem strange but if I remember right there is only about 50lb difference in weight between the 13b in the FD3s vs a more basic LS1, seems like there is no way but weight finds weird ways to crop up.

also take into account that the KA is an iron block engine so it definitely has extra weight up front. that an aluminum block v8 might not. though I know nothing about VH45's

Yeah, most tough spring rates come from japan, where they swap big long iron blocks in there. a 2jz gte or an rb26det are really heavy, and very long too. Most of the weight is on the front track. a V8 is short and most of the weight is the gearbox, which sits in the middle of the car.

hit of fortune-auto. Ask their opinion and get some fortune-autos. I personally am not a big fan of tein :/
If you really wanna make sure it handles well ask fortune-auto as they quite adept suspension engineers.

(VH45 is a fairly light V8, Z32 trans is heavier and will probably help balance as mentioned) I would definitely upgrade coilovers though.

Fortune-auto ftw!

I know this thread is old as fuck now, But I've been doing some research on the same thing, Fortune auto sort of asked what engine I was running and said to run 10k spring rates up front. Even if there was no weight difference, simply because of how it sits in the bay. Makes me think he doesn't know what motor i'm taking about. Opinions?
