"Bastard Child" VDPA 2012 build!
Alright everyone Its time for me to migrate my build over to Zilvia. This is currently on Vegas Drift and I'd liked to get more feedback and such.
I'll start with the beginning of the thread which starts with a coupe and is currently mid build with a caged hatch. The time span is 2 months __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ______________________________ I just picked up the S13.4 buckey had. Her name is High Hopes. I've already dropped her off to get some work done. Mid mount Install my HKS GT2540R from my other build. Install PS pump and lines. Headlight brackets. The car will hopefully be ready for Best of Vegas, then during the break it will get a cage and suspension tweaks to bring it up to comp level. I feel pretty hopeful that the above items will solve most of the problems facing the car right now. I'll post up pics once the works starts to get going. |

Mid mount and headlights(even though not bolted up in pic) are done. I wanted to exchange the turbo but seeing how it will need tuning I decided just to fix the exhaust leak between the mani and T25. I'll boost the little t25 to 15psi which means it will fall down to 12psi before it gets to redline. I'm also running no BOV so I'm sure I'll blow the shit out it by the end of the day. It should put some where around 230-240whp which will be fun and easy on the tires. power steering still needs to be done but the turbo and that shouldn't take more then two hours once the parts are there. edit: just noticed an added little something that I wasn't expecting. The rad support is all black now. super sweet! |

Best of Vegas started out for me with a rush to get the car ready. The night before I was so tired from multiple nights of 4 or less hours of sleep so I decided to rest instead of pushing to fully finish the car Friday night. At the time only the driver seat needed to be changed out and the lower harnesses to be bolted in and the fluids checked and topped off.
Going through tech it was brought to my attention that the battery wasn't fully secured. With no tools on hand I had to wait until my friends Danny and Marlon showed up with all the tools. They sorted the battery out while I worked on the seat and belts. I had a little snag with my new seats mounting bracket but it wasn't something Danny couldn't fix. I finish up the passengers harness and we were ready to rock. This took until the late half of the 1st session to do so I missed some run time which is ok. The first few runs were me getting back on the sattle and figuring out the limits of stock angle. Even though I was on 255/18 toyo R1Rs in the rear their age and the welded diff made them feel like ice skates. After only about 7 or 8 runs it was comp time. What? I just was starting to figure out the track when the drivers meeting came up. I couldn't believe that the morning was already gone and had very little seat time. First run was nice a smooth on the first transition but I bobbled the second sending me to close to the inside curbing on turn 5. Second run was nice and smooth all the way through. Getting to the last clip point required a 2nd to 3rd up shift and with 200hp spinning 18's even at WOT I wasn't bouncing off the rev limiter. As the top of 2nd came to an end I powered shifted third which got me to the outside clip and the run was done. I got a little excited afterwards and went to manji down the little back straightway and hit lock and spun. But it was judged after the finish line. I was judged 4th out of the 23 drivers that day. I hope to get the car ready for proam and score a podium or two. The rest of the day was nothing but balls out driving with passengers having a great time. I would go out for two runs and then pick someone else up and go out for two more. It was an awesome last hour and a half. The last few runs I noticed the turbo starting to make noise under boost so its probably toast but I'll rock it until it fully blows. I have to say thanks to Vegas Drift, Festival of Speed, and to Josh for letting use his truck and trailer, the guys over at DDS for getting the car drivable for the event, Danny and Marlon for crewing and Function Theory for the pictures. |

Here are some more snaps shot by Joel Cada! Keep up the good work!.
I have no idea what I was doing when this was taken. I'm surprised I had this much smoke. Its not the standard A-pillar stuff you see all the time. But for a stock motor foot to the floor and it can't spin the tires to redline I think it produced a good amount of toxic air. |

Alright so there was a big change made yesterday in a rush to get stuff together in a timely manner for the season. I bought a caged hatch from a friend of mine who is moving. Cfintch is the original builder of the car, so I thought why not.
So High Hopes is pulled into DDS and proceeded in getting her cloths taken off... I love s chassis for the fact that everything can come off so quickly. Within an hour I was ripping out her heart and her dreams of VDproam stardom. Left in complete disarray she now sites confused about what just happened. Now for the new kid on the block. After taping and cleaning until 2am this thing was ready for one day paint and body. This is the resulting tape job. Amateur hour at its fullest. The manager at the body shop was like "how long has this tape be sitting on here?" I told him I did it a couple hours ago and then he starts to rip it off. haha "we'll redo it..." For the price of the job I thought I wasn't going to get that much in the way of prep but they seem like they're going to do a bang up job. The color is going to be 040 Toyota super white which is the whitest white you can get. This will be my third car I've painted this color and I've also painted one of my bikes this color. I love it. I'm not sure what the name of this car is going to be yet. It hasn't come to me partly, I'm not a fan of hatches, out of owning 7 240's this is my first hatch. I wanted something that will get me through the proam season, which hopefully this car will do. I plan on destroying this chassis over the season so be ready for full on wall hits. Since this car has no paperwork it will be reduced to a missile car after the five proam events. As for High Hopes she'll have to sit and wait to see what will become of her. If I'm looking good for a license by mid season I'll get an early jump on building her for Formula D if the funds are there. If I completely blow ass I'll prep her to be an awesome street car. Only time will tell. |

Bastard Child is all white now. The super white paint job came out really well for what I paid and how much needed to be painted. I will say its not completely the best paint job but its good for a car that will be grazing the wall/hitting it.
The move to the new house went well. I'm all pretty much settled in. I've been pretty busy with other stuff and haven't been around the car much. The garage is drying at the moment from getting coated. It should be fully dried by tomorrow night. Hopefully I can get the car in garage and up on jack stands by mid day Saturday so I can hit the strip for new years. Sunday should be a big build day. I'm planning on having a few people over for a build party. The main plan for Sunday is completely striping the suspension and subframes off of bastard child and high hopes. The rear subframe needs the bushings burned out and PBM raisers pressed in. Plus some special parts put on that I'll share once I get good pics of them. Plus the brakes need to be bled and swapped over. The back half of the car should be completed by the end of the day. I dropped off my Greddy oil pan and APR head studs off at DDS to get put into the motor. A Power Enterprise headgasket will be making its way into there as well. As far as the motor is concerned it will be stock with the supporting mods added to keep it together. Here is probably one of the last pics of high hopes before getting completely stripped. That's it for now. Sunday will bring some good times. |

Alright everyone this is a pretty big update.
I got the car into the garage last Saturday night and this is work done that has taken place over 3 separate days as mostly a one man band with the exception of my friend Danny coming over and helping me out with the heavy fully loaded subframes. So far its been awesome getting back to fully wrenching on something. I've done this work with no power tools but its been pretty easy going. Sunday morning I started bright and early. I pulled Bastard Child's front subframe and suspension first and got it ready to go onto High Hopes. After I took off the front subframe the car already was thinking it had 1000hp... Jack stand wheelies! High hopes on jack stands for front subframe removal and bolt up of stock suspension. I didn't take any pics of the rear subframes coming out because it was getting dark when it was finally dropped Sunday evening. I hate this 4:30 sundown it's cramping my work style. I do however have a few picks of little stuff I bolted up during the time between the two rear subframe swaps. The caged shell had a hydro rear brake setup so I had to use the front to rear brake line of of High Hopes in order to complete the brake lines. I also swapped over the e brake cables and windshield wiper motor. |

By the end of Monday High Hopes was on the suspension off of Bastard Child
I had two days of all day track time at exotics so I didn't have a chance to get back to it until Thursday. Another early morning was spent looking at this. So in order to get this down to a weight where one person could handle it I unbolted everything and made it a bare subframe. I then took the front and rear subframes along with the power steering rack out to the street to power wash them. While the rear was out in the street I cut out the old bushings and installed power by max raisers This was a pain to install without a second set of hands and not have a central point to jack up the subframe with. So I ended up laying on my back and he-manning it up by force and I was lucking enough that I could use my knee and one arm to hold it in place while grabbing a nut with my other hand. Final result... So I packed up the garage and headed to DDS Performance to work on these... A full Drift Works knuckle setup. I unbolted the rear axles and hubs off the stock rear spindles and did a weight comparison. stock- 12.2 pounds DW- 11.2 pound so I save a pound the front DW- 8.3 pounds the stock front spindle however is a pound lighter even though I didn't take a picture of it. So here are the rears with everything bolted on. The front won't be done for another week or so. I'm sourcing S14 front LCAs and 5 lug hubs. I did a little work last night getting the suspension rods on and the wheel jacked up to check the geometry correction at the height I want to run at. BOOM! I like that the raisers gave me a little more correction then needed. So now the arms are a little slanted up which is awesome because under power the arms will level out. I did run into a huge problem with them however. Because I'm adding a lot of correction in the rear the Kei Office coilovers cannot compensate in the up direction. So talking with Odi from Feal Suspension I'm doing measurements and we think the car will have to run a S14 suspension set up to give me the ability to adjust the ride height up more. Well that's it. I'm actually cutting into my garage time writing this so I got to get to work on pulling the dash out of high hopes and moving the pedals over. __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ _________________________________ That's what I have so far. More work has been done I just have to get the photos loaded and a post written up. |

alright so its time for another update.
So after the last post I started to strip the dash out of high hopes. I took the dash and center console out and the full chassis harness out in order to cut out any unnecessary wires. As I'm setting here I decided the hell with this its time to get something that I know will work after I install it and it should make for an easy job. A Painless Race car kit and cut off switch Its very important to me to get my HUD up and running in the car. Its just something I must do. So I cut up the chassis harness in order to make sure I had all the wires going into the unit Some parts also came in. Godspeed rad. I'm not really down with cheap parts but I got it for a good price. I hope it says together. And 850cc injectors. I was thinking about going 1200cc and doing E85 but I might travel for a few events and having to carry all my fuel with me would suck. So parts I had laying around that I wanted to put on the car finally made it no. DW spacers, S14 tein inners and SPl outers. installed shanks When High Hopes left. I got these 50mm hatch fenders for trade with my old coupe fenders. I also moved over the fuel pump and gave it some extra zip ties to hold it secure. DDS had some S14 LCAs laying around so I decide to press the ball joints out of them and get a new set from rockauto And I decide that I need to take off the bump stop so hear I am grinding away at the left arm. Sadly I ever took pics of the motor apart but it was mint inside. I'll pressure wash it once it gets back to the house. Work done on the inside is limited to PE 1.1mm headgasket, ARP headstuds, S14 oil pickup, and Greddy oil pan Tonight I mounted the painless switch panel and fuse box as well as the Greddy gauges. The fuse box location might seem tacky but I wanted my crew chief to have quick access to a fuse just in case when have to call 5 min for a electrical problem. I'm tired, I'm headed to bed. |

Good call on the fuse box location. Mine is wedged under the dash and even with custom brackets to angle them for ease of access they are still a pain in the ass to service.

My S14 front hubs just got in after waiting since the 9th. During the wait I stockpiled, S14 lca ball joints and SPL shanks. My new Feal Suspension gets here today. I can't wait. They're S14 coils with 8k front, 5k rear spring rates and Feal's reworked valving. This was my last big part to get before the car could be completed. Now its downhill until a practice session slated on the 11th. I can't wait. I'll get a picture update together soon.

Alright so this update starts with the head in pieces on DDS's work bench. The motor has since been put back together and its awaiting transport back to the house. I keep forgetting to take pictures of it together.
I took a welded diff over to DDS to replace it with a kaaz. I didn't have the air tools needed to do the job so it was nice to head over there and get it done. I pulled the the diff out and made sure to keep the shims in the right order. This is the result of an about 45mins of hard work. The welded s13 diff I bought to use the casing did not come with a cover. So I pulled the cover off my VLSD and swapped it over. All buttoned up a ready to go into the car. Moving on to the S14 LCAs. I painted them black and pressed new ball joints into them. UPS finally got around to delivering my S14 hubs. It only took them 12 days... : So I slipped them onto the DW spindles and tighten them down. Then the LCAs and Spindles where joined. I couldn't wait to get them one so I started putting them on as soon as I got home but I only had a few minutes before I had to leave again. |

This morning the FedEx driver brought a box of happiness. My new Feal Suspension S14 coil overs. I have to give a big thanks to Odi from Feal Suspension for building a shipping these out in one day so I had them the next.
Now the reason I went for the S14 coilovers was to close the gap in height adjustment with the drop spindles. One little oversight I had was the upper hat on the S14 rear coilover is bigger then the S13 chassis mount holes. So Odi is modding two S14 rear upper hats in order to fit the S13 chassis. Since I wasn't able to mount the rear coils. I took a pic of a cool perk to the Feal coils- a camber adjustment slot on the lower perch. This is where the day got rough. I must say even though I know the DW spindles are going to be pretty nuts. The over all quality leaves something to be desired. The power coat is caked on so heavy it cracks/chips if you look at it hard enough. All the bolt holes have to be reamed out in order to accommodate the bolt. Even if all the paint is out of the bolt hole the tolerances are so close that the bolt by itself has trouble going through the holes. I had to hammer the lower shock mount bolts in and I slipped a few time and hit the coilovers and they came out without getting a scratch while just tighten the bolts cracked the DW spindles. caked cleaned- and you can see the chips on the DW spindles and that's from tighten the ball joints in. There is also now the problem of having S14 Tein inner tie rods with SPL outer tie rods. It seems with the added DW spacer the adjustment is to much that the inner and out combo is too long. In order to remedy the situation I had to order Z32 inner tie rods because they are shorter which will be here in a few days. This means I have a set of brand new S14 tein's for sale. I decided since I couldn't get the steering set I'd get the front Evo brakes on. Even then I ran into a problem of the bolts of the mounting bracket when fully tightened touched the brake rotor. I went down to Ace to pick up a few washers and finished the job. I took another shot to showoff the new coils. 8) up next is the wiring, overfender instillation, and engine/tranny drop in. Check back soon. |
