Big Tire Question For Autox

Ok guys, well ive decided by next season im gonna invest in some bigger rims and big tires. I run STU at all of local autoX events (street tire class), and most guys out there run falken azenis rt215s (and a couple are investing in the newer, more pricey rt615s). My next set of wheels we probably be off of a stang (cobra knockoffs or something of that sort). My reason for this, is because a lot of them are 17x8 with good offsets and good brake clearance (z32 brakes on my s13). Now my street rims and tires (225 on a 7.5 16'' dt05r up front) will almost run the front and backs of my fender liner under hard cornering. Will a 17'' even fit no the s13? Most of the offsets are 12-15mm up front and a 24mm out back on those cobra' rims.

Second question: Tires....basically ive decided on either
Falken Azenis RT615s (245/45/17- $152) (255/40/17- $152)

Yokohama Ao32R (Soft compound/ 255/40/17- $211) (Hard/ 255/40/17- $165)

Hoosier A3S04 (245/40/17- $218) (255/50/16- $208) hoosier doesn't make the 255 in a 17"

Kuhmo Victoracers (255/40/17- $173)

Soooooo....all in all, i dont even know if the 255 will fit in the front of an s13, I also don't know if Hoosiers are even allowed in Street Tire class (dunno if they're dot approved). And would i really be that bad off getting a hard compound ao32r on a 26oo lb autoX car(they're so cheap)? Any help is greatly appreciated, sorry for such a long post.

A032R, Hoosiers and Victoracers aren't allowed in street tire classes.

And IIRC, 245 is the max width of STU. So... You're pretty much set

i thought anything DOT approved tires were allowed (which all those are, except maybe hoosiers), also the max tire width in STU is 275.

no, tires with threadwear inferior to 100 is considered a R-compound and not legal in street tire classes.

btw....STU allows all the tire you want with a front engine rear drive setup...but AWD is limited to a 245 series tire.

and any tire with a treadwear rating of 140 or less is considered void for Street Tire classes.

actually STU allows unlimited wheel width (which is limited to 8inches in STS), howevre 275 is the maximum width for RWD, and 245 for AWD. And I feel like a jackass now after looking into all these tires. Looks like im gonna get the Azenis for their "200" treadwear rating (actually more like 100). Thanks for the help guys. However, im still stuck on which to decide:

17x8- 245/45/17 azenis
17x9- 255/40/17 azenis (would this even fit on the front of an s13?)

Rob whats the offset on the fronts, and do you have camber adjustments on your coilovers? If so plenty of (-)camber will always help to fit larger tires, not to mention help the car through a turn . Fender rolling is an option as well, darnell aka red240 aka lumberjack makes plenty of events and can give you his price to have them rolled . Itll prob. come down to the offset Id think anything in the 30 range would be your friend. 40 on up and Im sure youll be rubbin, as specially as low as your shit is

well with a 17 im gonna have to raise the car some. And PSI runs a 16x8 with a 25offset and a 5mm spacer up front (so basically a 30mm offset) with a 245/45/16 and it fits fine. But most of the cobra rims are around the 20mm area, so i might have to get longer wheel studs and a spacer. And im not trying to 'catch' up in STU, or try to be the king (already got that locked down ), but i just bought these little azenis for this season. I already intended to go bigger next season, just didn't have the money right now. And yes i have camber adjustable pillow ball mounts, so its gonna cambered to hell thats for sure. I thought darnell charged about 50 to roll and pull fenders with his roller. I'll have to talk to him. And why are you running DSP? You should stay in STU, as far as lance, well he's been caught, but he should just either put on the stock stuff, or SAY he put on the stock stuff and run STU. Although he did pretty well even running SM. whats your reason for changing class bradley?

Because I have SPL tension rods and Tanabe RUCAs and Benson and Hassan said they aren't allowed in STU but they are allowed in DSP and SM so I figured I'd have a better chance at points in DSP (because no one really runs it) then in SM.

(slapping self) yep, thats what i meant, thanks. Well i found a set of '4lug' cobra rims that are 17x8 all around. With a 12mm offset up front, and a 24mm offset out back. Thinking something like this would fit.

well i test fitted my 16x8.5 with a 37mm offset and a 245/45/16 tire, and it doesnt clear my coilovers. Ive got d2's, so Halo, if you've got any other big rims that you could throw on the front and test fit, that would be awesome. Even with my normal 7.5 and a 22mm offset up front with a 225/45 it clears by a small margin. I just dont have that much room. I dunno how people are getting a 245 up there with an 8inch rim. I calculated the offsets, and opposed to my normal front set-up (which clears the strut by about 8mm or so (guessing here)) an 8inch rim with a 2omm offset would have 4mm LESS clearance to the strut. So halo, i need your help here, since i thikn you're the only other person interested in big 245s up front, and also has d2 coilovers. Any other suggestions

Width of the rim is not important. Only offset is.

think about it, the tire is always centered on the rim, so if you have a 16x7 +35, a 16x8 + 35 or a 16x9 +35, the tire will always be offset by +35.

a 17x8 + 35 rim almost clears 245 series tire. My guess is a 25 offset or less rim will allow 245s to fit in the front.

I was thinking something along the lines of a 15mm offset. But i was thinkng a 255 tire would bulge on over an 8inch rim a little bit. So i was trying to factor in that as well. I know the 17x8.5 with the 15mm offset of the DT05Rs clear the front of the s13. I just didnt' know if perhaps my coilovers were harder to clear than others.

Maybe this will help:
http://toy4two.home.mindspring.com/offset.html
Its a offset calculator, should give you an idea of how much space you'll have to play with.

^^ yea i go there pretty often. Thats how i came to about a 15offset or so with the 8inch rim. A 255/40/17 should fit over an 8 easily right? Ive got 245s on an 8.5 now, and it fits fine. Anyone put a 255 on an 8 before?

^^yea i know. But having no power, i dunno if 255s are just overload on my engine/tranny. I mean i dont even have an lsd, so my rear 245s right now will spin if i come off of a corner hard in second. Im looking at getting big tires, and a differential. But the new azenis 255/40/17, and the 245/45/17 (which is actually a little bit taller, also anotehr reason i dont want it) is the same $152 per tire

I did it!

16x7 +35 with a 245/45R16 Advan A032R... (Anti-drift setup)

It clears the coilover by a hair!!!!! I am going to purchase 2 5mm spacers just to be sure!! I am a happy camper.

I would say an 8" wheel would need at least a 20mm offset to fit 245's..

Sorry, but those control arms are not legal for Street prepared, only SM and STU.

Looks like every 240 autocrosser in New Orleans is on this thread, hehe.

wait, so the RUCAs are allowed in stu?? I thought any spherical bearing that replaces a bushing (other than pillow ball mounts) were illegal?? Someones gotta clear this up.

I don't know who is giving you false information. I've seen several of you guys thinking that you can run street prepared with spherical bearings. Street mod and STU are the only classes other than prepared (not street prepared) that allow metal bushing material. Myabe that is where the confusion lies. Prepared classes allow any bushing and suspension points may be relocated. Street Prepared classes allow only non metal bushings and no suspension relocation. Street Mod and STU allow metal bushings but do not allow relocation. I hope that clears some things up. If you have any detailed questions you can call me at the shop. I'll be happy to help.
