This has been a long time coming so I decided I would go ahead and start a build thread on here for my endeavors. With the 2013 season on the horizon I decided to get more serious about earning my FD Pro License, ditched the CA18 and Im moving forward with a 1JZ-GTE VVTi. The motor of choice was tough because Ive grown very attached to the CA, but the lack of power and ability to build the motor further was holding me back. I finished 8th in Evergreen Drift Pro-Am with the most under powered car at the track. Every round furthered my frustrations and as soon as the season ended - I ordered a new motor.

Here is a little history on what I started with and where Im going. Parts are rolling in daily and Im pulling the CA this weekend.

Here are some shots of my BMW E30 that I ran for several seasons. This car is where the CA18 began for me. Prior to 2012 I ditched this chassis in favor of a more subtable car - an S13. It seemed like the cliche thing to do, but it proved to be more than capable for me in 2012.

2013 BUILD
With the help of Russell @ NissanParts.cc I was able to pick up a 1JZ and get it to my house while I was at SEMA. Here is a pic of it as it arrived that was texted to me with tons of questionable remarks since I was in Vegas and no where near the motor.
http://www.nissanparts.cc/catalog/nissan/1jz%20arrival.jpg

I took the time this past weekend to get the motor on an engine stand and do a partial tear down, open the valve covers, remove the pan, etc to do an inspection. Everything engine wise looks good. The turbo on this motor was toast and there are some other small issues that Im working on right now, but this motovated me to start tearing down the CA.
http://www.nissanparts.cc/catalog/nissan/1jz%20teardown.jpg

One of my newest sponsors is Extreme Turbo Systems (ETS) located here in Washington. ETS is a pretty awesome local company and we are pretty stoked to have them on board for 2013. Im pretty sure this is the first drift car they have ever sponsored.

Just wondering, what's 'more suitable' about an S13? Can you not adjust rear camber on the E30?

I had driven the E30 for 5 years. That car had seen walls, off track action, you name it and it was just beat to crap. It was hard to do things to the car without fabrication work and I wanted something easier. With the amount of choices for S13 parts on the market - it makes things quite a bit easier. Im happy with the choice.

I'll keep up with this one... I'm almost done my S13 (180sx) with 1jz-vvti swap...
What are you looking into for standalone? I'm running a Haltech PS2000, although expensive, it has some awesome features / add ons > Also, look into doing LS2 GM coilpacks, pretty awesome upgrade for the cost of your ignitor... I'm also selling my coilpacks and ignitor if you want spares...

GL with the build, i'll let you know what numbers I make, should see the dyno before Christmas

That would be awesome - Id love to hear more about your build and setup.

Im not planning to go standalone quite yet. Its not really in the budget. Im going to run SAFC2 and Fuel Cut Defender until I can upgrade.

let me know if you replace the gaskets where you find the full kit, because i CAN'T find one for shit and I need one.

Im not planning to do a full rebuild on this motor. Im doing some of the maintenance things like - Water Pump, Timing Components, Crank & Cam Seals, Serpentine Belt, Oil Pump, Etc. I know the head gaskets is not a US Part and I dont plan to mess with that at this point. If you need any of that stuff message Russell @ nissanparts.cc on here (RussellM) and he can help you find the parts.

Its like Christmas right now with all these new parts coming in.

Ive pulled off all of my suspension links and have those up for sell locally. Im revamping everything, aside from my Tein Coilovers and Solid Bushings. Ill get before & after shots up when I get to that point.

F1 Racing Clutch.

Nice built, but don't let this garbage clutch ruin your built, I have been giving this piece of shit 3 times in 3 different car, until I realize garbage is always garbage, can't be changed. You better invest a little bit more money into a good clutch rather than save money using that garbage.

In regards to the clutch concerns. The 1jz version of this clutch uses all factory toyota parts except for the clutch disc itself. Its a factory pressure plate, bearings, etc. besides the recomendation from someone who has 43k on this same clutch setup and counting with a mild built 2j cressida, the use of the factory parts were the only reason I considered it. My power goals are not much more than 350 at the wheels so this should hold up just fine. I will also be using factory flywheel!

Our Team Photographer (Jason Zimmer) came by over the weekend to shoot the progress as we installed SPL Suspension Links, put some bits and pieces back on the motor, etc.

http://www.nissanparts.cc/catalog/nissan/ErichJasonZimmer2013Full.jpg

We have partnered with SPL Suspension Parts for the 2013 Season and couldnt be more pumped about getting their links on this car. Everything that was on the car previously has been replaced with the newest version SPL Links, which was a pleasent surprise. The new versions include reinforcement tabs on the Clevis of each link and the SPL logo etched on. We didnt expect to receive their newest revision, as they just released them.

Cutting the locating tabs off of my Nismo Motor Mounts. Although, once the motor was dropped in we realized that the Nismo Mounts are a bit bulky to run. So, we either raise the motor or get new mounts, I want to keep everything as low as possible so I have ordered new mounts.

Your priorities are messed up...
lol, come on you don't like a good looking engine? Don't get me wrong, I love a 2J, I got a built one in my garage. But I want a nice clean stock VVTI 1J for my daily IS300 really bad. They just look so good in the bay.

I don't know much about the jz platform so excuse me if this is a retarded question, but does the front cover on that engine say Yamaha??

Yamaha helped on developing of head design. So they put their logo on front of the 1JZ. You can see the same thing of 3S-GE BEAMS engine.

Ive gotten a lot done to this thing over the last couple of weeks. Right now Im waiting on some key components to get it buttoned up and on the ground so I can send it up to Rob at Godspeed Fabrication to do his magic. Once I have the car back from him, it should be fairly simple.

Im still waiting on lines and fittings for the fuel system. Im also changing out the solid rack bushings for some Poly's.

EVD Round 1 was a couple of weeks back. Going into this event with zero seat time with a new motor, new suspension setup, basically new everything - I was a bit stressed. To add to the factors spinning around in my head it was a wet day - nothing new in the NW. So, we hit the road and headed to t he track. We made a few adjustements at the track due to the track conditions and head out to grid. Needless to say, the car felt awesome. Everything about it was on point and I couldnt have been happier.

I qualified 3rd and once the pieces fell I finished in 2nd place and sit in 2nd place overall in the series, behind Formula D Pro Licensed Driver Kory Keezer.

Things didnt finish all well though. On one of my final runs we had a freak tie rod failure, sending my car into the wall - twisting up some metal, destroying tons of parts on the left side of the car. I will get some pictures of that carnage soon. These things happen, its the life of a drift car. We have most of the needed parts to get it back on the ground. Thanks to SPL Suspensions, BC Racing, and numerous other companies for getting us replacement parts very quickly.

Rad car and build! I love the simplicity and cleanliness.

But let me get this straight, you can drift a car without tubbed fenders and a tube front? You, sir, are a pioneer.
