And everything else seen here
http://www.virclub.com/images/track/northCourse2.jpg VIR site (http://www.virclub.com)

How, you ask, can you have all this?  A High Performance Driving Event sponsored by NASA-VA.  All you need is your car that can pass tech, an SA95 or newer helmet, and $301.  You will need to sign up through www.nasaracing.net .  You will also find more detail there on the weekend.  As an aside - when you make your car profile include "Zilvia" as your team name (or edit it on your existing profile).  If 10 of you go, you will get a discount (I think about 5-10%.. which is something).

For your money you will get four 20 minute sessions - each day - plus 2-3 hours of total classroom time. &nbsp;Do the math - that's almost three hours of track time!! &nbsp;$100 an hour! &nbsp;Compared to drag racing or autox (figure $25 for 3 minutes - tops!<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> look at the value! &nbsp;During your track time, you will get a licensed instructor to help you develop your high speed driving skills. &nbsp;You will learn more about driving smooth and fast in one weekend that you could pick up in 10 years on the roads... trust me on this one!

Not to mention that it is impossible to have more fun in your car. &nbsp;Yup - even naked <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> &nbsp;VIR is one of the best tracks in the country and is the most awesome driving experience I've ever had. &nbsp;BTW: I'll be there (likely staying at the Innkeeper West) - so I hope to see as many of you as possible come on out!

See ya at the track &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':thumbsup:'>

If I had the money I'd definitely be there. &nbsp;$300 is a lot to a college kid, especially when I just bought a new $11,000 bike (pics of that will be posted in OT in about a week)...

Sigh, I wish I could go though, it'd be a blast!

I'm there,
Just a few questions.
When is the cutoff date?
What do I need to pass tech, (cars struggling a little at the moment)
How much do you think a hotel room would be.
Is there anything to do after the track on friday sat night? (bars etc)
How early do you have to wake up in the morning - related to question above <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

Edit: can I rent a helmet or do I have to buy one?
Thank
Jed

They will provide helmets for free. &nbsp;I had to give the guy my License as Colateral.. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> &nbsp;I MUST GO...

I've got a question, do you have to be a NASA member to run this event? It's only like $20 to sign up (IIRC) but I won't If I don't have to. I went throught the registration up until they wanted my money <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> and I didn't see anything about it. So I assume no?

Foxcolt,
All the info you need should be on their site.
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">When is the cutoff date?</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>
I didn't see one, so I assume whenever it fills up.
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">What do I need to pass tech, (cars struggling a little at the moment)</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">How much do you think a hotel room would be.</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>
Well, unless several people from zilvia.net that go want to split the cost of a hotel, I'll just find an empty lot somewhere and sleep in my car. I'd imagine a hotel would cost $60-$90.
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Is there anything to do after the track on friday sat night? (bars etc)</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>
We are going to be in Danville, VA...prolly cow tipping will be the most fun thing to do at night. Hopefully this wouldn't be a determining factor on whether or not you come.
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">How early do you have to wake up in the morning</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>
Schedule has not yet been posted. I'd imagine you'd have to be there for registration/tech no later than 10am, but we'll have to wait and see...hope we don't have to be there at 8am.

Here's the links you'll need
http://www.nasaracing.net
http://www.virclub.com
http://www.turnfast.com (i'm sure they'll cover a lot in the class, may help if you already know some of it so you don't have to think about so much all at once)

Wow - glad to see everyone interested!! &nbsp;

Let's see...

1. &nbsp;Yes - you have to be a NASA member to run a full HPDE. &nbsp;Cost, iirc, is $30. &nbsp;Next year - join early and it's like $15!

2. &nbsp;There is a cutoff date- but it will be full way before that. &nbsp;I'd say w/n 2-3 weeks of the event, it will be full. &nbsp;Maybe sooner for beginner groups.

3. &nbsp;Tech is easy. &nbsp;The bottom line is to make sure your car is safe and to make sure you aren't going to ruin everyone else's fun by dumping oil or something. &nbsp;Take a look at the sheet.

4. &nbsp;Lodging. &nbsp;There are two ways to go. &nbsp;a) camping at the track. &nbsp;I think it's $10 and there are a lot of racers that stick around. &nbsp;Everybody has a really good time. b) the Innkeeper West. &nbsp;Rates are about $55/night (as of 02/02). &nbsp;You get a bed, no bugs, and protection from storms. &nbsp;See entertainment below!

5. &nbsp;Entertainment. &nbsp;Again, two ways to go. &nbsp;At the track, there are campfires, stupid antics, and great advice. &nbsp;In town at one of the hotels, there are stupid antics and great advice. &nbsp;Actually, the parking lot at the InnKeeper is right next to the cruise McDonalds and it becomes a parade route for ricers checking out the race cars. &nbsp;FUNNY. &nbsp;VERY FUNNY.

6. &nbsp;WARNING / THE NEXT DAY - if you get sh!tty the night before, you will suffer the next day. &nbsp;I've had friend boot and rally after a late night of watching dancers and drinking in WV. &nbsp;You DON'T want to be that guy. &nbsp;While you wouldn't think it, doing a track day like this takes a LOT out of you. &nbsp;Most people go to bed no later than midnight. &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; Oh yeah - all hands meetings at a rural track like VIR are bright and early (about 8<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'>0). &nbsp;(no lights to run under either) &nbsp;Gates usually open at 7<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'>0 a.m. and before you run, there's always stuff to do. &nbsp;If you are looking to get lit, this ain't the environment. &nbsp;If you are looking to hang out, pit race, and shoot the breeze w/ some people who know more about cars and driving than most of us will ever... and drive like hell during the day - It's a good scene. &nbsp;Remember- you are paying $300 to do this - don't ruin the time for yourself. &nbsp;Take it seriously.

I'm not sure now whether I'll be camping or hotelling. &nbsp;The camp sounds fun... but I like beds. &nbsp;Not sure if I have a roommate yet either, but we should all get together so that those that are going to stay in a room can hook up. &nbsp;

One day...one day....

I would love to go, but I don't see me putting myself 1000 miles from home with the possiblility of my car becoming immobilized. &nbsp;I need a reliable tow vehicle. &nbsp;I guess I'm stuck with lapping days at the comparably inferior 1.8 mi. No Problem Raceway (www.noproblemraceway.com) until then.
Kinda sucks you don't get to experience the uphill esses, though...now those look like fun. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/notify.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':notify:'>

OK... now I've got a month to buy a helmet, get new brake pads and fluid, and get an alignment. &nbsp;DC area people, what's a good place to try on some SA2k helmets?

WOW - this is friggin awesome!

By my count, we've got:
me
sykik
AKA
NR
uuninja
and Dave is pending.

Joe McG is an instructor who drives an s14 (although not on any boards). &nbsp;I haven't seen Brad's name (who's also an s14 owning instructor) on the list yet.

That should be at least 6 of us from here. &nbsp;I know that at 11 people, we would get a 10% discount. &nbsp;I'm checking to see if any lower numbers get us anything. &nbsp;That and trying to convince a few other people to change their team name. &nbsp;If you know anyone else who may be going - get them to sign up w/ Zilvia. &nbsp;It would pay for your gas for the weekend! &nbsp;(BTW: the discount is given out as a cash refund at the event)

AKA - that's not bad. &nbsp;I've got to do most of that stuff too. &nbsp;As for helmets - check out OG Racing (http://www.ogracing.com/). &nbsp;They're in Manassas, but they have a great selection, &nbsp;good prices, know their chit and are super helpful. &nbsp;I think I'm going to pick up some gloves b/f Oct., myself.

Camping will likely be $10/tent. &nbsp;Don't know anything about sleeping in cars prices. &nbsp;I'm still not too sure what I'm doing. &nbsp;I may buy a tent for the fun of it... or may just split a room w/ someone. &nbsp;I'll keep this thread posted when I hear more.

This is great!

I think we should definately hit FA too. &nbsp;I lost my password, but go ahead and post. &nbsp;There are a couple guys from there that I think might show up. &nbsp;I know there are a few members there from NC. &nbsp;Maybe Greaser, etc. too? &nbsp;It's worth a shot. &nbsp;

Nr - if the wife is interested in driving at one some other time, this would be a great introduction. &nbsp;There are a lot of wives and GFs that come out (mine would, but only to Summit) and I've seen at least a couple sitting in on classes. &nbsp;Honestly though, if she likes cars, don't be surprised when she is out watching the cars - usually the advanced and some of the race groups are out when novice are in class <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> &nbsp;Let's see - watch a 348 Challenge Car or GT Porsche or listen to how to set up for Nasscar Bend? &nbsp;At this event, there will ALWAYS be someone on track to watch and you'll be amazed at how little time you have in the pits b/n class, instructor advice, and car checking time. &nbsp;NOTE: she can't ride in your car when you are on track except during the parade laps at lunch time.

Foxcolt - the odds of you hitting a wall at your first HPDE are very low. &nbsp;If you take a look at the VIR website, you'll notice how few walls there are there (unlike LMS or CMP). &nbsp;It is very rare for a car to get bent up in the novice group also b/c a) you aren't that fast and b) you aren't taking big risks. &nbsp;The only car's I've seen get bent are people in advanced group or people w/ high horsepower cars like Rx-7 turbos. &nbsp;

But yeah - you will find out how much you suck as a driver &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hehe:'> &nbsp;The worst is when you ride w/ an instructor in something like a 100 hp Civic and you realize how much faster he's going than you could EVER dream of. &nbsp;Or maybe that's the best? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

Good news though, my SS lines and rear pads came in today. So if my rotors ever come in, I'll have all new brakes for the VIR weekend.

Sorry I was in Texas all week... ugh <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

Dave - damb you and your spending habits!! A bit of advice - get in touch w/ Elise at nasa (I think she's [email protected] - but the link is on the site). Find out where you are in the line up and tell her what happened and how much you want to go. Tell her that you understand that it won't change anything, but that you would like to know whether you should make plans (i.e., you are close enough on the list that you are likely to get in). People always cancel and, for better or worse, I think NASA has some favorites that might be able to pass you on the wait list unless you beg. Elise is really cool - so she'll understand.

Charles - there is a Holiday Inn that is for the quiet folks and the InnKeeper West for the rowdy kids. The Innkeeper is a scene - the parking lot becomes a little party. It's fun - but get a room on the far side of the hotel from the McDonalds if you want to sleep b/f 12<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'>0 (you probably will). I'd have to check out mapquest or something to see the other hotels in that immediate area - but you'll want to be on that side of town. Plus, that way you won't get lost b/c you can just follow the caravans back and forth to the track. I've gotta make some plans myself! &nbsp;**edit: &nbsp;look for hotels in Danville, VA - that's where the InnKeeper and HI are.**

I've got to catch up w/ a few people, but I might have more info soon.

Mark - Thanks for the info, but from looking at Orbitz there are 3 innKeepers within 25 miles of VIR's address. &nbsp;Closest one is actually in Roxboro, NC at 13 miles. &nbsp;Can you get me a phone number, or address? &nbsp;sorry to be a pest.

Oh yeah - there are InnKeepers everywhere in that part of the world. &nbsp;Sorry C. &nbsp;As for Roxboro - I know some people are planning to stay there, but I'll be in Danville. &nbsp;B/c I come from the north, the IKWest is easiest for me. &nbsp;Plus, it's the sheeziest! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> &nbsp;THE Innkeeper is at 3020 Riverside Dr., Danville, VA 24541 (434.799.1202). &nbsp;The going rate appears to be $60/night for a double. &nbsp;At that price, the Holiday Inn is a good alternative... but you don't get this:

Ok that sounds good. &nbsp;Now to the next question....What's the best route from N. VA.
1. RT 29 runs straight down to it
2. 95 S to 355? (not sure if that was the name) over
3. 85 S down

Any and all suggestions welcome &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':thumbsup:'>

I took 95 to 355 down last time. Mark and I took 29 back I would have to say that 29 is a more direct route. The only thing you need to worry about is weekend out of town traffic.

If any one wants to follow me down I will be leaving the DC metro area between noon and 2 pm. That should be early enough to beat the rush.

-Matt-

HippoSleek

Actually, we took 360 to 95 in Richmond coming home. &nbsp;Mike, Al, Dave, etc. took 29.

From reports, it sounds like 29 is better if you are leaving from the western NoVA suburbs and 95 to 360 if you are going from DC or Alexandria. &nbsp;Either is better than 95 to 85. &nbsp;The 95 to 360 route is what I got from the spiffy new Yahoo maps/directions page.

I'll be leaving DC at about 3ish and meeting up w/ someone on 95. &nbsp;I just hope I actually get out of here at 3 &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lookaround.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':look:'>

You all should have a blast, VIR is the best track in our area. Personally, I've been there twice already, once doing the south course, and once on the full course. The easiest way to get there is to take 29 all the way down. And there is a cheap little hotell in Roxboro NC. The rates there are like $30 per night, and its like 19 miles from the track. The hotell is called Budget Inn, and you can find the number to it from the VIR website. (www.virclub.com) Have fun guys, wish I was coming also.

P.S. If you've never been to that track, be weary of turn 11a, it's a doosie. &nbsp;If you have no clue what im talking about, wait until you're there. lol. I love the oak tree... LOL

HippoSleek

Hey Dmitry. &nbsp;Are you going to Summit in November?

We don't get Oak Tree - my personal favorite spot for making lots of ground on my fwd friends - b/c we are just running north. &nbsp;11a - isn't that the little right before Oak Tree? &nbsp;I own that turn... lift at turn in for South Bend... flat foot up the chute... stab brakes for 11a (if that IS the quick right)... turn in w/ gas... straight line to the outside curbing... downshift just before turn in for Oak Tree... gas... shift... gas... shift... gas... watch that ITR you just caught slowly walk you down the back straight <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

BTW: New plan - I'll be going down 29 too in light of rain + Friday 95s traffic.

For anyone coming from DC or MD - don't take 95 South. &nbsp;Our buddy the sniper has caused a helluva traffic snafu. &nbsp;Instead, take I-66 W to Rte. 29 South. &nbsp;Watch out for a tricky turn in Charlottesville - but otherwise, that will take you all the way down to Danville. &nbsp;

By november I hopefully will have the money for another track day, but who knows. I like my tires hot, and the pavement warm, so November might not be the best time to go. Plus if I pull all the right strings, I'll be going to Summit at the end of this month to race with the Ferarri Club of America. That's gonna take a drain on money.
&nbsp;Turn 11a is the oak tree turn, its the very tight righthander, that leads into the back-straight. I've seen many a car loose it in that turn, and its always fun to see them in your rear view. I would love to go to a race, and have another 240 to play around with. Last time I whent, I was either faster than a car, or slower, so there was no playing involved. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':sly:'>
