I have a 1991 240sx LE and I wanted to throw a ford 302 engine in it. I was wondering what I would need to do this swap. I need the info from someone that knows what they are talking about. I would really appreciate it. PLEASE NO ONE POST ANYTHING THAT IS NOT INFO ABOUT THE SWAP. thanks

Check the "v8 swap" FAQ in the Tech section...
i believe there is a small block ls1 swap kit readily available that will pass emissions..but i might be mistaken..(not sure if they figured out the header deal yet)..anyways..the ford 302 i believe has been done..
sorry im not much help, thought i'd get this moving..but check that FAQ though

there was a guy who put a 5.0 mustang motor in one, as well as a must-40 conversion hahaha = 87-92 mustang front end on s13. pics floating on the internet if u can find em
i know you didnt want anybody to post something not about the swap but if your gonna do the v8 swap why would you wanna put a ford engine in a nissan. why not the titan v8 or something or the v8 from the toyota soarer?

because you can find a 302 on the side of the road. Aftermarket parts for the 302 are cheap and plentiful.
Titan V8 or soarer V8 = money, hard to find parts. manual transmission is not a common thing.
well i never thought about the manuel transmission thing. but i just think its kinda stupid to put an american engine in a japanese car.

haha, yes "lets make ultimate drift car with RB26 powered mustang".
theres nothing wrong with putting a V8 in a light RWD japanese car. especially if its a LS1

that's what I thought til I say a Supercharged LS1 in a 240 at Formula D. I instantly changed my perspective...

My brother is working on one for an s13 currently. It's mostly alot of cutting and welding. He just took some old truck mounts we had lying around and cut them to fit the 240 crossmember. Also modified a Ford tranny crossmember (I believe from an LTD) to work. Used an older Mustang 4 speed which comes pretty close to the stock shifter location. Custom length driveshaft is also necessary depending on what tranny. These were all budget choices as his a$$ is broke. He's got it all mounted and in there. It sits surprisingly low.
Two other things. He used a Ford front sump and had to cut the rear of the sump a bit to clear the crossmember. The drivers side exhaust header/manifold also poses a problem due to clearance issues with the steering shaft. I hope you are good at welding and ghetto fab work...

The only thing japanese about the Titan engine is the badge. Those puppies are built in Echerd, Tennessee, and the rest of the truck is built in Canton, Mississippi :P

custom mounts, driveshaft, custom downpipe, tranny mount, lots of wiring, thats what you will need off the top of my head. you almost might need to cut some stuff for the shifter to fit into the cabin properly. as they said check the V8 swap FAQ, because im just stating the obvious stuff, i dont intend to ever swap a V8 in to my car.

Yeah I personally wouldn't do it. I think ford reliability is lower than nissan reliability, and I am not big on 'wrong company swaps',when plenty of powerful, light engines are readily available from the 'right company'. I would understand if its like an MG or something, okay wtf engine did MG made that really made decent power?
Good luck either way.
well i guess its whatever you wanna do, i just dont really care for v8 swaps.

Thats like saying a white guy shouldnt date a japanese girl. There is no reason to that logic, no car cares what engine is under the hood, and no chassis cares what engine is inside it. ALL that matters is the grin you get on your face every day when you drive your own car. and maybe a little bit the grin you put on other people's face when you put down a cloud of smoke and dissappear.

ford has an extensive racing history from rally to formula 1 and enduro racing back in the day. THey made some of the worlds greatest race cars.
thats not to say those motors were reliable tho lol

I'm thinking the title of this thread should be changed to "Do you guys think I should put a 302 in a 240?"
jeez
At any rate, if you are planning on an injected 5.0, turocharging is a very feasible and somewhat affordable journey. Shorty headers for the 5.0 can be flipped to aim forwards towards some "turbo room" up front. For a V8, those engines respond very well to boost, are fairly lightweight (for cast iron), and love to rev. I pondered this type of swap in one of my FC's a little while ago. Good luck man.

Lower than Nissan reliability. NO. I've put over 275,000 miles on an untouched 5.0 motor & I beat the hell out of it everyday for 12 years. That engine changed my whole automotive perspective forever. My stupid Z32 TT could only dream of being able to do the same, let alone my 180SX...The benefits to this swap will be a very responsive inexpensive combo with limitless aftermarket for the motor. There isn't another car out there that can compare to the aftermarket available for the Mustang.
The 302 is lighter than you think as well, especially if you opt for aluminum heads in the future, as I did when I build my first one. The downsides to the swap other than possible legal ramifications (location dependant) is that you will have ZERO traction (good luck with that), and because of that you may lose to slower cars. Also, if the 302 is say a stock 1987-93 5.0 HO from a Mustang or Lincoln MK7, it's only putting out 225Hp stock (BUT 300 lbs torque at low rpm) so anything you could do to make more power would be recommended. That's when cost comes into play. A good set of aftermarket heads (stock suck, approx. $1200), new HP roller cam (~$250), better intake (~$450), mass air meter & injectors (~$500 for both) will get you to about 300-350 RWHP if the proper combination is used on a stock motor with free flowing exhaust.
Doing this swap with a stock motor is kind of pointless though, even though it will be a lot of fun & faster than with a KA, you won't be king of the streets by any means. Good luck!
