2015 Budget VQ Swap

Hello Zilvia, I decided to make this thread after completing a third VQ swap. I built this car because I was tired of not getting seat time. I needed something reliable and comfortable. The VQ swap price rivals SR swaps with more bang for buck stock.



Powerplant:
2003 VQ35DE complete, 116K wrecked G35 sedan($800)

2004 Transmission, clutch line, OEM flywheel, FW bolts, clutch pressure plate ($400)
6 Puck Clutch($50)

Ebay intake kit ($36)
Shorten hard line ($0)


Cooling:
KA Radiatior w dual 12" fans ($130)
Silcone hoses ($60)
Adjustable temp fan switch ($20)

Swap Parts:
Custom drive shaft. G35 yoke with new S13 tail flange ($200)
Mount Kit. Ebay special is the biz and it comes with shifter bracket ($360)
Osiris license w NATS delete ($300)
Fuel System (tomei type S reg, z32 filter, brass T fittings) ($110)
Exhaust Y pipe to S13 out ($100)
Harness wiring: I did it myself ($0)
Power steering setup. Re-used stock SOHC setup ($0)

Vitals:
Asus memo pad 7 ($100)
Bluetooth OBD2 dongle ($20)
Torque pro for Android ($7)

Options:
Upgraded PS lines


Upgraded fuel system

I like that you found a way to keep the A/C! It looks like you had to modify the hood for it to shut completely? In fact, it looks almost like it has a bulge in the final pictures...

Curious on how you retained ac. Did you just swap over the ka compressor and lines?

Most cases all you have to do is use the SWAPPED engine's compressor and have lines made. its not a perfect situation (different style compressors like different pressures etc etc, but luckily since both engines are nissan engines the VQ compressor should work just fine) but its far far better than no ac at all.

I plan on retaining ac w/ my vvti 1uz swap utilizing the toyota compressor and having lines made. all you need is the lines coming off the compressor that way a hydraulic supply shop can just cut them and make what you need. (my local hydraulic supply store will weld/braze custom ac lines for just about anything.)

Yea, i knew that was another option but was curious how he kept price down with getting lines made. How much does it run you locally?

He's using the obd port with a dongle and the tablet to read everything through "torque"

Custom a/c lines shouldnt be more than 150 bucks. you take the ends off the VQ (or 1uz in my case) compressor, figure out how you need them routed, then take the ends off of where they terminate (one at the condenser, one at the evaporator i believe) and drop em off and VOILA new ac lines that should bolt right up!

hes using the obd port. but hes using a bluetooth obd2 adapter so he has to use a tablet. or phone. looks like this would be another great option for a quick approach to getting stock gauge cluster to work

I cut the skeleton out above the plenum. There is a bulge but I prefer it over a spaced out hood.

SOHC KA compressor and lines were used. The KA AC bracket was welded to the VQ bracket and it uses the OEM tensioner from the the KA. Luckily, nissan uses the same belt size for KA/VQ

I bought fittings and 6' of hose and made the line myself. It was under $70 in parts for hi pressure and about $30 for low. I have since added a power steering cooler.

Fuel is the only thing that works. RPM works if you use a MSD pickup node. Speed works if you buy a GPS speedometer pickup from JEGS. wires right up to stock cluster. I cruise around with my tablet for my vitals. Torque lets you know whats going on in real time. I put my gauges away when drifting and peek at them after my run. so far so good.
