Best way to seal tail lights?
So it is raining really bad in CA right now. When I get out of class I go to my car and find a nice 3 inches of water in my spare tire compartment!!! I located the leak at the passenger side tail light seal. I cleaned off both surfaces, now I need to re-seal it.
What is the best product to use? (I want it to stay tacky like the original, not harden like M3 window weld.) |

dum dum=butyl rubber
Great stuff, but very hard to remove in winter and messy to deal with in summer.

What they all said. OE butyl rubber, about $12 a roll.

how about good old RTV or something similar?
easy to cut with a razor if necessary, seals well if left alone. why would you want that gorilla jizz that comes stock? |

Nissan's sealing tape is the best in the industry. I would just buy some instead of trying to reinvent the wheel

I ended up getting this stuff it is a 3M product. It is 1ft long strips of caulk that doesn't dry. We will see if it works. I called the dealership and they would have to order it.

i used window sealent, works like a charm. Probably never gonna get the tailights off now. You can also use strip caulk, they sell them at paint stores.

Yea i just got that strip caulk. Tested it with a couple cups full of water and it looked like it worked. If it fails on me I will just get the OE thing ordered. Now just have to let my trunk dry out. Thank for your help guys, greatly appreciated.

I had used some black windshield silicone on the inside of the car, which I don't recommend. I actually still had the tails leak too. Fail. i have different tails now though.

haha when i installed my koukis, and since it was raining i checked if my hatch was still leaking and it was.
i went crazy cause i packed that shit into the tails and cleaned them clean!. then with a bucket of water i found out where it was leaking from, the weather stripping lol. pulled it out and saw this lil crack and i just used some leftover sealant and packed it all up again =] so im good now |

Since it's been 7.5 years, I figured I would post for an update on how the different sealants are working for you guys. The tail-lights on my hatch are still leaking after installing new tail-lights that included foam strips pre-adhesed to the lights.
I just got off the phone with Central Valley Nissan in Modesto and they wanted "43.95 a piece" for a roll of B6553-89915. Courtesy Nissan's website lists 43.69. I looked it up on Fontana Nissan's website and they want 34.95, so that is a much better price. What do you guys think about using the OEM roll of Butyl Sealer vs Mortite vs Black RTV vs just shooting a tube of window caulking between the tail lights and body when installing?(Probably not the last two options). I am going to check out Lowes and see if they have rolls of "Mortite" Weatherstrip and Caulking Cord. http://www.frostking.com/mortite-caulking-cord/ I would ultimately like to find a roll of Butyl Sealer from Oreilly's/Autozone like hOngsterr did, but I tried Oreilly's and they didn't have anything other than a roll of foam weatherstrip. Next I will try AutoZone. |
