14/15 year old wants to start a 240sx project!?!?!?!?!
Well I want to start a 240sx project.
Should I save my money and buy a car when I can drive? OR Should I buy a car now and fix it up where when I can drive It is done? If I do get a 240 I just want to built the KA up. I want to keep it NA just because I dont want something I cant handle. What do you guys think? Also I will be posting cars in here to see what you people think. |

Shit I'd buy it as soon as I had the chance an build it as time progresses an hopefully have it done by the time you get those L's...It shouldn't be too hard to accomplish beins you arent dumpin a shit ton into tha engine!!! Whichever way you choose tho, GOOD LUCK!!!

seriously tho, these cars are a costly hobby, one that many college students, and working individuals find it very hard to afford.
right now you should save all the money that you make for the next two years, and when the time comes buy a nice clean car/shell. Then go from there using the money you saved as start up. but seriously be 14/15 you only get to do it once, dont wast it on a 240 |

I started on the classic 240z when I was 11. I learned a lot. So far I've rebuilt my own engine, swap tranmissions so on and so forth, I'm 16 right now. Haven't had a car for over a year because its too much money. My parents never gave me money so it was costly for me. Hah, anyways I have no regrets. I had to work hard which cut off most of my social life but brought a whole new one. I'd say its worth it, depends what kind of person you are how much stress you can handle before you give up. But once its done even technically it never is, it is a big stress reliever.

By the time you are 20 these cars will be really old rustbuckets. With all the nice new cars coming out you better look in the mirror really hard and be honest about how much you love the 240sx as a project platform. If you plan to drift then don't even bother as it'll just get wrecked over time. Better to buy a wreak when you can drive, beat it up to learn and then build a project car once you learn what you like and dislike about this car.
Honestly if I were you I'd get a older M3 as it is a much more capable car NA. Unless you plan to go turbo the KA is not a good motor to mod. |

Well I think one important thing you didn't mention is if you have any kind of support from your parents. At 14 or 15 you won't be able to do anything unless your parents approve of it, especially financially. You cant afford to do anything to a 240 with a minumum wage salary.
But in my opinion, even if you do have support I would recommend that you wait till you are a little older to get into cars. Do your research now and you will make better choices when you do have a car in front of you. The only exception I see is if your dad is really into cars and can build one with you. |

That part too garagelu my dad was really into the 240z and help me build it. Not every problem that you'll encounter is on the internet it probably is but have to search hard, if you have someone to help you then go for it. If not just as here if you search first we will answer good.

If I could do it all over again, I would NOT get into cars.
Cars are a hobby best reserved for the rich and those born into opportunity. You should aspire to do something with your LIFE, not a car. I've spent more time and money on this car I've built more than anything else in my life, and right now its one of the biggest regrets I own. I missed out on a lot of opportunities to have fun in my youth working and spending all my time/money on my car. If you're doing it for girls, just having a car will get you all the attention you need from girls. Work on yourself, your personality, go out and have fun rather than focusing on trying to compete with people on the forum to have a cool car. You'll come out better in the long run. DO WELL IN SCHOOL, GO TO COLLEGE, listen to that advice and you won't regret it.

Cars are not a hobby for a 14 or 15 year old kid. The amount of time, money, and dedication it takes to build a car that is worth building is astronomical. If you want a 240, save up and buy one for your first car, but don't plan on building it right away. Just get some shocks, springs, wheels, and tires. Any aspirations you have towards taking the car farther than that should not be taken seriously at your age. In all likelyhood you will wreck your first car anyways, so I wouldn't be very eager to dump a bunch of money into it untill you know how to drive it. Take it slow man, don't just jump right into it. Get a clean car to start with and slowly work your way up from there.

yea honestly its not that easy. Unless your mom and dad are gonna "help", if you want some advice, i'd buy a 240 that is already running and that will be driveable. That's pretty much what I did at 16. And as you work and get some income, do some mods to it. just my .02cents

in my point of view its not really worth it. I bought my coupe when i turned sixteen. ive ran in to so many problems with these cars such as blown headgasket, clutch slipping, alternator, starter, oil leaks, ive spent hundreds of dollars. but the best part was i was able to fix the problems myself by reading fourms like these.as of now im seventeen and do sohc ka to dohc swaps as a hobby/job..and bought myself a s14. If you like to fix your own things and dont have a problem with income then go for it...but also i heard something out the states changing the drivers licence age to 18..by that time 350z's are gonna be cheaper if u like that platform..

No-one can tell you what to do in your life... you should make these descisions for yourself, and no-one else... ever!!
All anyone can really say is, Obey the Law, Stay in School, and Be Yourself!! Fucked up part is... this is the same shit our Parents told us, and theirs told them, and so on! Fact is... its Fact!! -Drew |

I'm also betting that at 14 your interests are changing so quickly that you'll get bored of "messing with" your 240SX before you can even drive, and it'll just be money down the drain. Buying a car before you can even drive is just stupid IMO. |

Go ahead, but don't expect to use it as a daily once you can drive, until it's done.
I thought I could have my cake and eat it too, but I was met with a lot of downtime and a dependance on a second car. Also, it's going to be a money pit. If I could do it over, I would have spent far less money on my stupid cars.

I say this because I'm 17 and I went through this not long ago.
Growing up i was always around cars, both of my parents are were regional champions in the SCCA in autocross and untill about 5 years ago my dad owned his auto parts shop and machine shop. I had the EXACT idea you had, save up some money, buy a car that needs some work, and by the time im ready to drive, it will be a nice fun car. It is all easier said than done. The problem is money and experience. I know you have saved up some money but its amazing how much stuff costs to be repaired that you dont even think about, weither its mechanical or cosmetic. Without at least some sort of steady income of money, there is no way you could keep up with the cost of a car. And i'll also believe you do have knowledge of car and how they work, but you can never truely understand something until you actually do it. Heres my best advice. Do what i did. Invest your money in an older car, collector car, anywhere from the 30's to even 70's. Buy one thats cheap and could have some valueable parts, search ebay completed listings for parts if you think you have a car in mind. Part it out and sell the parts. I did it to a 1960's triumph tr4, and 1960-70's jensen healey, and a 1950's buick. I split the earnings with my dad, because he was the one who paid for them and sold the parts, and I learned a lot. At least hold on getting a car until you can drive or at least get a job to pay for it. I throughly enjoy being into cars but it can be costly, hell I own 3 240sx's, all paid for by me. Kinda rambled on there but i think its good advice |
