What would be involved in transplanting a '98 KA24DE into my '91 fastback? And will switching from the '98 auto tranny to my '91 manual cause problems with the ECU? (BTW, the engine will have ECU, wiring harness and anyother parts that will not be needed for the Silvia convertion the owner of the '98 is doing.)

If you have the full motor and goodies, I'd image you can use the new ECU. Could be wrong though, dunno what sensors it has outside the engine itself that wouldn't work on an s13

well the 98 is OBDII so you may need to use the 98 ecu or you might get away with just hooking up all your 91 smog stuff to it and then hooking it up to the 91 manual ecu that should work. actually now that I think about the later is probally the way to go. no since tieing yourself down to OBDII if your car did not come with it. It is a much pickier system.
Plus if you put the 98 auto ecu into a manual trans car it will throw a code because its OBDII . so go with the 91 electronics and smog hooked up to the 98 engine and disregard all 98 smog and ecu stuff all together. sorry if this sounds like I am thinking out loud but it should help you. |

Upon further investigation, it has come to my attention that the s14 engine has electronic ignition while the s13 has a distributor. Any suggestions on how to keep the old ECU and the electronic ignition? If not does the s14 have a front plate on the head that can be switched?

I was planning on keeping the 91 ecu. But let's suppose I install the OBDII, and then connect the laptop to it. Where do I get the connector and program?</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'> Ah, therein lies the rub. Make your own cable, write your own program. That's assuming that OBDII really is RS-232 (or some other useful protocol) compliant. |
