Z32/Z31 hybrid transmission--> SR20 better shifter location

okay guys making this thread because i got a good deal on a mazworx transmission adapter to use a z32 trans.
great quality kit BUT im not a fan of the position of the shifter when using a z32 trans.
here, you will find a list of RWD transmissions used on some nissan cars:
http://zilvia.net/f/tech-talk/251952...smissions.html

now, as you can see, the 87-89 TURBO Z31 uses an internally same trans. as the Z32 and the bellhousings are interchangable. why do this? Because of better shifter location with Z31 gearbox/z32 bellhousing. maybe it can be same location as stock! mainly cause uses the same type of shifter as a regular KA24/SR20 transmissions.

im assuming it should work because its pretty much the same transmission except the bellhousing and the type of shifter it uses.

any input/ideas/ are appreciated.

to sum this up, will this work? i might give it a try

z31 shifter type:

I dont think its gonna be as simple as you think its gonna be.

sure the internals might be the similar/same but that shifter linkage is totally different, so you wouldnt be able to just swap the bell housings you'd have to modify or swap out that linkage rod, if your lucky that rod design/function/placememnt are the same on both transmissions.

But im not 100% sure since I have yet to have the privlage to tear apart a Z32 Tranny although I know there is a Z32-RB25 tranns swap floating around, so they got pics

the Z31 box looks just like a SR gearbox, i bet there's no way Z32 internals will fit plug&play.

internals are the same. shifter position should be better since i found something similar about a 260Z using z31 trans for better shifter location. never though of rb25 trans though, i'll have to check that out. z32 bellhousing bolts on right?

Yes guys, sorry that shifter picture was for reference.
I believe that's the weaker non-turbo transmission off a z31

This is because the 87-89turbo z31, the z32tt and RB25 are all 30A transmissions.

Z32 NA transmissions are the same too, they just have a different bell housing.

I think the z31 turbo trans bellhousing bolts straight up to the KA block similar to a rb25 tranny (1 bolt hole off and another widened)

Was gunna search for old thread but i figure since this is already posted -____-

What are the benefits?

Better gearing for lower HP cars?
Better gearing for higher HP cars?
Same gearing?
Stronger?

And what needs to be done to make it work?

can you bolt SR bell housing up? doubt it... lol

Z32 trannies are stronger than SR/ KA, but still weak, synchro-wise. 4th gear synchro is notorious for going out. Mine's been grinding for years already. Everything stateside isn't the greatest. To get a good Z32 tranny, you'll have to get a '99 Spec tranny from Japan. Updated synchros for less grinding. Said to be a lot smoother than the US spec tranny.

yes its a 30A transmission. just obviously better position for the shifter since it doesnt hang off like the Z32.

no, only the weak turbo one off of the 84-86, which IS the same as SR/CA/KA/RB20

No, all z31 transmissions have the same engine to bell housing bolt pattern which means it will work.

Incorrect.

84-89na is the FS5W71C ~ SR/CA/KA
84-86 turbo is the Borg-Warner T-5 FS5R90A
87-89turbo is the FS5R30A ~z32/RB

71c goes thru shift forks, T-5 is the weakest but probably the easiest rebuild being so common, 30a is pretty solid.

Pretty sure all the v6 trucks use the same style tail housing as the Z31 (2wd ones anyways, since 4wd would have a place for the transfer case to bolt up). That would include v6 hardbody's, pathfinders, xterras and frontiers. Gearing might be different though.

its not tru the bell housings are diff for the ka...you can however swap bellhousings from the non turbo vg and the ka/sr...they are all the 71c tranny

turbo tranny 30A is completely different

I understand that the bell housings are different, but the RB25 trans is a 30A and bolts up to the KA (a couple bolt holes need to be widened and one is completely off, but it still bolts up)

Custom driveshaft, and trans mount (just like when people run the z32 trans conversion kit)

Can anyone confirm the z31 bolt pattern is just 1 or 2 off?
I might try to find one at a junkyard and check it with a KA trans dustshield

I was wrong, the z31 bell housing doesn't bolt up to the KA... I think this is where I first read about it and I guess mixed up the info...

PERFECT! this concludes this thread. Z32 bellhousing on Z31 transmission will place shifter on the stock location! Just maybe different driveshaft
