If you know the valve seals are bad, why not replace them to be safe before going KA-T??
Oh sorry, you said Valve Stem Seals. Just go to the local Tire Store and have them replaced on all four wheels.

humm
i was reading for the same, i finish my car,, well on bodywork.... now i want to turbo my engine, i know that the engine is little damaged and i was planing to rebuild the engine,,, but i was wondering if i need or is very necesary to use performance parts like forged pistons and valves etc etc.. or if i only rebuild the engine with oem parts is that ok?,, i know and of course that if i use perfrmance parts it would be better but each part cost arroun 600dlls. i think is too high for me.. is ok if i use the same parts of course new ones from store like autozone or sumthing like that?... thanks GC.

Stock bearings, oil pump ect are fine. Only thing you will want to replace is the pistons and rings. The ring lands on the stock pistons suck and will crack. Everything else is stout. May want to balance everything while your at it.
Milage has nothing to do with life. I can kill a engine in under 10K. But there are all so 250k SOHC KA-T's out there. Check compression, leak down, oil pressure. Also note if there is any oil consumtion/blow by. |

I beat on my engine everyday and keep it sometimes at a constant 5.2k-6.2k rpm when drifting for no more than 3 min then i take a break. My engine still pulls hard and i maintain it in good condition. Change oil with Royal Purple good oil filters, spark plugs, and everything. Have a timining chain rattle... i still need to take care of that though.
Im really interested on doing a ka-t on my s14. Right now the only thing keeping me from doing its if its going to support the boost. Most of my friends drive hondas and have went from turbo'ed hondas to n/a because they did crappy turbo kits then ended blowing up the engine. One of my friends said i should just get a sr20det and we started debating it. Then i said why spend 3000+ for a swap when i can pay $2000 and get a good turbo kit. Im really stuck in between because i dont want to blow the ka24de up and then end up selling the turbo kit. The sr20 was meant to handle boost and if i beat on it i dont think it will be much of a problem. Right now all i have is a Walbro fuel pump, t04, and bov. Nothing much but i got it real cheap. I need injectors, fpr, etc, etc... So my real question is.... if the ka24de could handle a good beating at about 235 hp with a good fuel system setup and good compression. Sorry for thread jacking but since this is here i might as well get some info too. |

morex i can vouch for saying u will not spend $2k for a good kit.. u will pay more......unless ur doing the sr kick down parts...then 2k or way less... but a good kit will definetly be pricey...DO it man go turbo u wont regret it... Your almost there.... and to answer ur question about KA beatings..... talk to alot of shops that are running KA's for their autox cars and see how long they've been running a single engine in 1 season.. and those engine exceeds the Hp u listed...=)

hell my motor is at 184K miles. I did a leakdown and comp test 180psi across the board. Im gonna boost this bitch by end of summer. hell ill beat on it till a piston dies from detonation. the motors are strong. fuel, timing, and other stuff is what you have to worry about first before toasting a piston. you could be running low boost and poorly tuned and kill the engine. just spend cash on forged pistons and your motor is set. if you have more questions search on here under Tech for the KA24DET FAQs and ka-t.org tons of knowledge out there read up and your questions will be answered without asking more. many people have already asked the same questions as you way before you even considered it. just research more and more.

How do you go about getting the engine compresion tested? Sorry for such a stupid question. Do i have to take the car to a shop or can i do the test in my own garage?

i think its a device you screw into the spark plug location and turn the engine over. ya do this on each cylinder. i've never even seen it done but thats how i figure its accomplished.

dont need forged pistons, an overbore just to be ka-t,"CKAMC" u are kinda BS'n... it would be nice but u dont have too.... plenty of guys are hittin 350hp on a stock bottom... good insurance for a stock bottom end would be head studs and a metal headgasket...revert to use 240 manual for engine specs.

it's all for the extra security and what is worth it for ur wallet. The stock bottom end is pretty strong, can handle up to 400hp. But if you are going to open up ur engine to build it, I don't find a reason why not just toss in at least some piston, rods, some stud and head gasket. Do a job on the crank. Replace all the rings, seals, etc. And if you really want to take it further. Polish the head, get retainer, new valve. replace the timing chain, water pump, oil pump. Now, slap on a turbo kit, a standalone system, tune it a bit and have a 500 bulletproof beast. Cost? 6000-8000g. But much better than some SR with minor upgrade. You probably will hit 300-400 with that amount of money and that is with a time bomb waiting to go off. If something goes wrong such as a deno, you are done.
