the one on the far right is 97-98 KA24DE head, with missing a pair of tower.
you can use 95 cam on the 97-98 head with no ill effect, people been swapping 248 S13 cams into 97-98 head with the missing holders.

Exactly. The 97-98 heads do not have the rearmost cam towers, otherwise they're identical.

left is 95-96 s14 KA
middle is 97-98 s14 KA right is 91-94 s13 KA you can use s13 head on a s14 block. just keep the s13 valve cover and s13 upper front cover and youre fine. ive used s14 heads on s13 blocks, and s13 heads on s14 blocks. worked fine for me everytime. |

The cam oiler port is fed by the engines main oil system which means any "internal leak" in the oil pressure system will cause oil pressure drop. If 96 and below cams are installed into a 97-98 head, the oil pressurized camshaft will spit out the oil out of the last cam journal...the one that isn't sandwiched between the cylinder head and cam cap. Make sense? As a result, there is now an "internal leak" within the engines' oil pressure. Sure the hole is only about a 1mm diameter. I ain't a math wiz so I can't calculate what the exact pressure drop would be, but I'm sure most guys who've bought junkyard 248 duration cams don't have an oil pressure gauge to monitor any pressure drop after installing into their 97-98 head. Then again, oil feed lines are required for KA-T guys which would probably slightly alter pressure as well right? An engineer would probably tell you to do it right and plug the hole before you insert yer camshaft into her head. This is just an FYI. I'm not trying to say your gonna seize your motor by letting oil piss out of the cam journal pin hole. I'm saying use extreme caution. I personally wouldn't do it on my 98. I have an oil pressure gauge but I'm not gonna be the guinea pig either. From a KA-T guy to another KA guy, Good luck! |

two other questions i had just out of curiosity. what if you run 97/98 cams in a '96 head? would the cams not reaching the last journal be a problem? and the dips in the backside of the '97 head, my memory is a little off, are those in the '95 head too? the pictures aren't very clear. i've been looking for a direct comparison too. thanks. |

Ironically, I just diagnosed my friends engine whoas. He was running on two cylinders and backfiring like a mofo. I did every test imaginable, including the painstaking task of taking an ohm meter to every ignition/fuel related pin out. Low and behold an exhaust camshaft split clean in half at the #3 journal was the culprit. It appears the journal seized while the cam gear kept spinning shearing the cam just before the journal itself. The #3 and #4 exhaust valves were incapacitated, hence the backfiring which made the car run as if only on two cylinders. No escape for the exhaust but through the opening intake valves. Pics to come. 97-98 cams are the same exact length as 96 and below. The last journal just doesn't have the pin hole. You can run 97-98 cams, but the last journal will lack proper lubrication and inevitably seize...unless your using the AMAZING "Slick 50" or "Prolong"...just kidding... If someone decides they're in desperate need to run 97+ cams in a 96 head you'd have to mill a pin hole for proper lubrication or run without the cam cap on the last journal. Otherwise...snap goes your camshaft! |

if you can afford a '98, you can afford real cams. don't buy junkyard shit, get some real cams from brian crower or JWT. s13 cams are for loosers that own '95s

i didnt know making 10+ whp on s13 cams is for losers. 232 232 vs 248 232 maybe you should research or try things before you open your mouth and say smart things. |

S13 cams are 240, 248. A pair of the 248s yields even more power, but with greater overlap in the midrange, loosing a little before they kick in.

One thing to note on the S13 or '95-96 cams in the later S14 heads without the last cam towers:
You can use any cam in there, but you HAVE to push in the rear oil plug. Measure the depth on the stock cams with a toothpick (or something). Then use a small socket as a 'drift', and just tap the oil plug in as far as it is in the stock '98 cams. Easy stuff. - Brian
