Like it says, I cant figure out where to get the right color for my wheels.

I am in the process of painting my rims and currently I have them sanded, primered and ready to go.

I'd like to have something like a Dark Bronze color.

All the Duplicolor Bronze Wheel Paint pictures I have seen from what I have searched, look too light or goldish.

I'd like the wheels to look like these:



I dont know what type of color that is. Does anyone have experience on how to get this? I'm not interested in powder coating since I want to go with the simple route at the moment.

I have searched Autozone, Orielly and Pepboys and none of them have any bronze paint for wheels.

I did find Rustoleum Oil rubbed Bronze Paint but it looks really dark and I am unsure

Any Ideas?

I redid a set of wheels last year and bought my color (a Satin black) at Lowe's. try there or Home Depot to see if they have something. A few good coats of paint and a few good coats of a clear ( I did 5 of each) and the wheels came out great and durable.

buy a paint gun then go buy whatever paint color you want

He's right the colors are endless when you use real paint.I have rattle canned a lot of wheels and although the paint seems like it dries hard it will chip.Auto paint gets way harder and using it is easy.I cant tell you how many cars I have seen on here ruined by spray paint.Also think about this,will the tires be on or off.If off your gonna want to give the paint time to harden before mounting.I would just leave the tire on.I paint wheels for most of the local dealerships and always leave on the tire.Porsche,Lexus,BMW,Mercedes,Audi Ive done them all.If your interested I have a quick way to mask off that tire.

buy a spray gun, and use a base coat clear coat system and it will turn out a lot better. auto paint supply stores have books with color just look through it and pick one out. pm me if you need details i can walk you through paint prep and the process

Nice.

I do know I want Bronze. I want the color in the picture, a darker bronze. So its not really a matter of finding the color as I stated.

I just want to know which that color is, on those wheels. And what TYPE of paint I should put on the wheels. I have a 20gallon aircompressor and an air-spray-gun tool it came with. But I could never really get it to work right.

I figured I'd do something easy since I dont plan to keep the wheels for long.
carter,wade Are you talking about using note/flash cards? I saw that on several forums. Great method.

The Bronze spray paint by Duplicolor looks too light on the pictures I've seen.

Right now the wheels are off, the tires are unmounted. I have the bare wheel primered so far. Previous owner had painted these white and they looked really fugly so I used Aircraft Stripper to strip the paint.

toyota 4q9 & Corvette Bronze Metallic are pretty close to that color..... dont use that rattle can crap primer or it will chip and peel after a while. use a automotive 2 part primer on those bare wheels.

Like I said in my original post. I have seen that color and I think its too light for what I want my wheels to look like.

Also, I went to ALL the local stores, and none of them carry the duplicolor wheel bronze color. Autozone, orielly, Pepboys, walmart, home depot.

Are you planning on using the Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze paint? The paint, not the one with the primer. They have it at walmart.

that crap is garbage... laquer primers suck if you want a quality job use poly urethane primers and base/clear

Ah that sucks. I alread primered one can on all those four wheels. That's what you see in the last photo. I can't go through the process of removing this again, it took far too long.

Would I be able to just apply on top of it? I have maybe $20 left in the budget for this project. =)

where do you find that poly primer?

I might do a dark gunmetal...bronze might not look good with my car color.

Nice, yea gunmetal would look nice with yours. I've seen some with bronze also, but gold looked better on red/maroon.

I have a black car so gunmetal would be too much dark everywhere

automotive paint supply store or if you have an oreilys auto parts store they sale it..... no i would not apply a urethane coating over a laquer, just sand that crap off... 20$ is not going to be enough lol

The issue your having is that the color you want it not a color its actually a process its called anodizing..

Naturally though its possible that you can find a paint that looks like it but thats why you cant find a paint code for the wheels you have pictured

Get a test panel, spray it flat black first,then put the bronze on tiop of that. This will give you the darker look.

Im not sure of your skill levle but,on the wheel you could go heavier on the black at the center and fade it lighter as you get to the spokes to try to get the effect of the rim you posted.

I used Rust-oleum Antique Brass Metallic paint. Either I didn't know how to paint, or it wasnt enough cuz I had to use 4 cans or so. And I still think I need to get one more can and do another do over.

I did not put any clear coat on this.

I bet I went through over 8 cans of Satin Black and Satin clear coat. I did 5 coats of each sanding every two coats to make sure it had no blemishes. 4 isn't so bad. Do you have any up close pictures of the finished product? I think they look great on your car.

Mine came out well enough to take 2nd in the Duplicolor Restoration Challenge last year. And the car was in Super Street and Modified magazines last year.

^Nice dude, looks like you even went as far as taking care of the dings and what not.

I did sand between each spray, it took me forever but I think if I do one more coat it should smooth out just fine.

Here is a picture I took after I let them dry overnight. You can see some areas can still have some more. but overall it looked okay.



The had the tires balanced through a friend, and the guy who did the balancing ended up chipping some paint near the center cap.

Do you think adding clearcoat is necessary?

The paint turned out nice. I didn't realize they were Maxima wheels in the beginning until I saw the logo center caps.

The clearcoat is going to give them a hard surface and keep the paint from chipping easily. It's not required, but without it the paint is going to wear a lot faster.

Brake dust ruins the paint. You need a clear. Then the brake dust comes off with no effort

OP I think the color you're thinking of is Matte Bronze, which is kinda of a dark bronze with no shine to it, its gonna be hard to replicate the color of those wheels since those AME Tracer wheels come painted from factory, you should check out their site, I think it tells you what color the wheels are available to give you an idea....

Yup, theyre the Sentra SE-R Spec V wheels.


I am already seeing a layer of brake dust just attached to the paint. I might just have to do this.

Nice. I'll see if I can find Matte Bronze paint. The only other bronze I found was the Oil Rubbed Bronze, which was too dark.
